In this tropics update today, The Pacific basin is very active with Hurricane Gilma and two other disturbances likely to develop. All three will get dangerously close to Hawaii over the next week to ten days. Meanwhile, the Atlantic basin remains quiet as the 2024 hurricane season continues. Activity will likely pick up over the last couple of days in August and into September. Hurricane season 2024 update 2024.

Aloha! Pretty crazy in the Pacific right now for three systems to get very close to the islands. The quiet stretch in the Atlantic will likely end over the next seven days. More in the video. Thanks for watching! - Jonathan

Wow all the systems are tracking close to Hawaii aloha must be prepared at least tropics in Atlantic is very quiet again but won't last I remember last year at this time was much more active there were 4 named storms and already ahead in number compared to this year but all the storms this year so far affected land no fish storms so far hopefully more of fish storms come in months ahead, we'll be prepared.

Have you ever heard of a correlation between hurricanes (or large low pressure areas) and earthquakes? I've heard that before, and it made me think about the 3 huge storms out there right now and the 4.7 earthquake the Big Island reported this morning.

The Atlantic may not even have tropical cyclones but have strong Tropical waves that could do lots of damage.

Do hurricane hunter planes routinely fly that far out into the ocean to sample these hurricanes like they can do Atlantic hurricanes? There are only six planes or something like that, right?

That is correct! They did send a team to Hawaii to start investigating those storms. They fly all over when called upon! - Jonathan
