Oh that's interesting someone has a different method to that square what they did is the boxes get a thin foundation put at the bottom then all gets put in a super then that gets put on a brooder the bees do the rest however I do admit it does Jot look natural as the Ross round system, the why you doing it looks close to the Ross round system the Hogg half where you put it for the bees to do the work and not cut out like you have does for me that is looks like it was a science laboratory grown honey as you only getting half the natural look as if the bees only did one half of the frame.

Hi, I'm from Argentina and those round honeycombs are not sold here. Where can I buy the material or make one to produce these honeycombs? thanks!

Your videos are so helpful. Can you tell me where you purchase the plastic boxes you put your cut comb in? Thanks.

Hi Dane, thanks for your comment. I believe that batch came from Dadant, but other major beek suppliers (Betterbee, etc) will also carry them online or from their catalogs. A word of advice: be sure to double-check which size boxes you're ordering, as they do come in both 2"x4" and 4"x4" sizes. We generally prefer the 4"x4" size, as it gives you a nice square chunk and that's what we show in the video. That said, I know plenty of beeks who like the smaller rectangular box, as well. Happy comb-cutting! :)

Freezing the comb helps to make sure that no little critters (like larvae, etc) accidentally end up in there.Thanks for your comment!

How do you get your bees to fill the Ross rounds as they wont do it for us and we have 21 hives so have tried several many thanks

It can be a bit hit-or-miss, in our experience! Some years we've had great luck...while in others, we've ended up with a bunch of halfhearted, half-filled, sorry-looking little rounds. What we try to do is to strike a balance between keeping the hive just crowded enough that they don't have anywhere else to build comb other than in the rounds....while not crowding them so much that they'll swarm on you. It definitely takes a strong colony and we try to keep them just on that fine edge of not-quite-swarming during those few strong weeks of spring flow. Best of luck with your efforts!

How much weight of comb honey per Ross round?
@oldswampapiary2545
@oldswampapiary2545 5 лет назад
We get roughly 8oz per round, though that might vary a tiny bit depending upon whether the ladies have completely filled the comb cells. As you saw from the video, we had a couple that weren't quite full/capped when we harvested! :)

Here in the U.S., we buy ours from a beekeeping supplier, such as this: www.dadant.com/catalog/m01024-8-comb-round-section-super-complete?gclid=Cj0KCQjwtZH7BRDzARIsAGjbK2ZiLbabSIuOMvoUzZDwOg-ihJRk7C1WN2Mkqtz5oVx8TrGzVeZxjgwaAuM7EALw_wcB

doesn't freezing the honey make it chrystalise ?
@oldswampapiary2545
@oldswampapiary2545 4 года назад
Thanks for your comment! In our experience, it does not. Especially when it's still in the comb.

Freezing comb honey stops honey from crystallizing. Once you pull it out of freezer, it begins to continue in that direction. I store the supers in a clean, unscented trash bag in freezer.

I am in England.The only time that I ever saw anything like Ross rounds, they were square.

Interesting! Here in the U.S. we order our Ross Rounds from a regular beekeeping supply store. There is also something called a Hogg Halfcomb kit, which produces smaller, more rectangular combs, which I don't see used quite as often here as the Ross Rounds. Is that what you have in England?

Thanks for the video, but the video is mislabelled. You're showing the three common kinds of comb honey. It's not the way to produce comb honey.

Hi Bob, thanks for your comment. I guess at the end of the day, the bees are the ones who do the actual hard work of production, aren't they? :D We lowly beeks just try to provide the infrastructure! Do your bees do comb honey, as well?
