This video is about THRIFTED REBECCA MINKOFF RE-DYE PART 2
This is the second half of a two part series. In this video I focus on dying the fabric part of the zipper, cleaning hardware, and conditioning the bag. You will need:
1. Angelus black leather acrylic paint
2. Rubber gloves
3. Leather preparer, nail polish remover (what I used), or rubbing alcohol
4. Paint brushes
After 24-48 hours of dying the bag I used the leather conditioner to condition the leather. There may be some rub off on the towel that you use, but that is fine. Do not use the bag for 24-48 hours to avoid rub off of dye.
Slightly water down some acrylic paint in a cup and apply to the fabric of the zipper. You may need to do two coats to completely color the fabric. If you got any leather dye or acrylic paint on any of the hardware put some rubbing alcohol/nail polish remover/or leather preparer on a Q-tip and apply to the stained hardware and clean off with a towel.

Great job on the beautiful bag. I am happy to see you are open to using both leather dyes and paint to achieve your excellent results. I apologize if you already know this or it is in the comments elsewhere where I didn't see it, but Angelus makes an additive for their acrylic leather paint called "soft" that is for use on fabric or stretchy or porous surfaces - it is widely used by some people who customize or refurbish sneakers. It prevents cracking, peeling, or stiffening of paint on a porous or fabric surface such as the zipper tapes. They also make a "hard" additive for more shiny surfaces (I used it for shoe parts, but some use it to paint patent or high-gloss leather or plastic). I have found these helpful. Good luck -- I enjoy watching your videos.

Hi! Thank you! And yup! I didn't start using the angelus paint thinner until a little bit after this video, but didn't know they made a "hard" additive! Have to try it out! Thank you for that! :-)

First... can I just say that you are ADORABLE! I just bought a vintage Salvatore Ferragamo top handle purse from eBay for $79!!! I found your video after looking for help on RU-vid for making older leather look better. OMGosh... I cannot wait to get that purse and the Angelus dye/Cadillac conditioner I just ordered from Amazon! I wish I had known this last Spring when I gave all my imperfect (expensive) leather bags to Goodwill! Thank you so much for your informative and fun videos. I'm going to be giving my remaining bags another shot at getting out of my closet with some Angelus dye!! Keep on doing what you do! 💋

Thanks so much for the tutorials!! I have an orange suede MK tote with brown leather handles. It is looking pretty dingy and am wanting to dye it black. I am struggling with how to do the handle because it wraps around part of the suede (through a grommet) and can't be removed for easy dying. Any tips on how to dye the leather handle without getting it on the suede part of the bag?

Hi and thanks so much for your videos. Very helpful!! Do you cover how to paint the actual hardware on any of your videos? I'd love to pain some gold or silver even into black. I'm just wondering how well it would hold if I was to use a nail polish. Thanks!

can you suggest how to repair a worn corner on a RM Mac? the white plasticy piece is showing through. I thought maybe dyeing the bag and using acrylic paint on that piece. can you think of any other way because I do truly love the color
@itsHadrian
@itsHadrian 8 лет назад
+Heather S hi! Okay. That's one of my most dreaded handbag problems is the leather on the piping getting so worn that he piping protrudes through. I know the classic answer would be the take the bag apart and apply a new piece of leather. I actually have thought of this at length because it's a deterrent a lot of the time for my purchasing a bag. But I've been watching and reading up on leather sofa repair and there's a product that's like almost like a spackle for the wall. It's like a paste that you can run over cracks of the leather and you allow it to dry and sand it down and you can dye or paint over it. And I've always wanted to try that and see if I can use that on the piping because dying it and using acrylic paint would work to an extent and would probably be okay for a smaller problem, but usually once the piping pops out the hole just gets bigger and bigger and I think the "leather spackle" would encase it and keep it contained and it creates and smooth seem less surface. If you're going to go the dye and acrylic paint route I would make sure to try and glue down the edges of the piping leather to the actual piping itself and then use acrylic paint on the exposed piping in a way that it's creating layers of paint to make it more 3D and flush with the leather. You might actually be able to do that and build layers on the leather itself so you would in a way seal down the piping and be able to even out the texture or you might be able to sand it down with fine grit sand paper and do one or two coats on top to make it all even. I hope this all makes sense. I'll try and do a video and fix a bag like that. I just have to find a bag and practice the repair. Hope this helps! Sorry for the long winded convoluted answer. Let me know if it makes sense lol.

I see that they sell sealant for after dyeing the bag. If I use that do I need to condition the bag before I use it?
@itsHadrian
@itsHadrian 7 лет назад
+bluebear526 hi! You don't really need to condition it after dying it. I just like to do that to bring out shine and condition the bag because dye is drying. You don't necessarily need sealant after you dye. It depends on the type of dye you use. Usually the sealant is a finisher to change the natural finish of the dye. There shiny, glossy, matte, etc, so it's really just preference. But no, you don't need to condition after sealant or dying if you don't want to.

The inside of my purse is neither suede nor leather. It’s like a polyester fabric inside. What can I use to dye this,
@itsHadrian
@itsHadrian 5 лет назад
You might be able to use acrylic paint watered down with water to dye it, though I’ve never died dying synthetic fabric with it.

What about using Fabric paint? Isn't that better since it's specifically made for fabrics?
@itsHadrian
@itsHadrian 7 лет назад
+mstiare1231 hi! The angelus acrylic paint is both a leather paint and a fabric paint. I like it better than regular fabric paints because it has more pigment, better application, and dual purpose 😊 they also mix together beautifully to make custom colors.

Hello, will dyeing the zipper stain the inner of the bag?
@itsHadrian
@itsHadrian 8 лет назад
+Ko Feifei hi! It can if you apply too many coats at once and water down the paint too much. This is a really good question. When I get the paint on my brush I dip the brush in paint and put that paint in my cup or plate. I then dip my brush in water and then dip my brush back in the paint I put in a cup and mix evenly and that's kind how much water and paint I mix together. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions and thank you so much for watching 😊

hi i have a huge problem with my jumbo chanel bag...the inner leather is kinda cracking..can i use the angelus leather to re dye it?thanks
@itsHadrian
@itsHadrian 8 лет назад
+Keysie Dionisio hi! First of all, thank you for watching and commenting! As for your bag, I can't believe that's happening! So the easy answer to your question is, yes, you can use the angelus dye on it, but if you purchased your bag yourself directly from the store and/or are sure it is authentic and/or if you paid a lot of money for it, then I would opt to take it to a Chanel boutique and having them fix the interior. If the bag is fairly new or under warranty they may even fix it for free. The reason I say this is because if you do anything to the bag that may alter it as far as color (even if it is to redye the interior) they can refuse to ever take it in for repair, pretty much voiding all warranties and excommunicating your bag in a way from ever receiving any sort of repair from them in the future. I actually recommend getting a leather conditioner. My brand of choice is Cadillac Boot and Shoe Care Conditioner. The leather may be cracking because it is too dry, too humid, combination of both. Also, the way you store it is essential. Never store inside a box unless you keep it in there with some packs of silica gel and I still recommend taking it out of the box and allowing the leather to breathe at least once a month, but I would do it at least once a week. Also bags that are heavily used and never get conditioner are prone to cracking, just like our skin, we need moisture and since a bag is no longer alive and cannot produce its own oils or moisture, we have to give it to them. Lol, wow, that was really long winded, but I hope I covered all the bases and helped you out. Let me know if you have any more questions. Oh, I forgot to ask what color your interior is. If it's black I think you may get away with dying it. But if it's a double flap with the maroon colored interiors that color is very hard to match, so I would not recommend it. But I do recommend getting the conditioner and trying that. The conditioner is always a good idea even if it doesn't cover up the cracking, though sometimes it does. Check out my leather conditioning video for my Celine and you'll see that in some cases the conditioner can remove some scratches and such, but it really depends on the nature of the leather and the problem it has.

+itsHadrian hi again!oh thanks this really helps me a lot.i actualy bought it preowned..but its very much in good condition..but the thing is since i totaly dont want to use it that much i just stored it in the closet for almost 2 years then i notice recently it is showing some cracks on the inner burgundy leather.so i thought probably the weather here in the Philippines or because i didnt use it that much...but thank you so much...i appreciate your replies!😁

@itsHadrian
@itsHadrian 8 лет назад
+Keysie Dionisio no problem! I'm here to help 😊 I know the weather in the Philippines is a little intense. I haven't been back there since... 2003 I think? But yeah, if you're storing them like in a closet it's always good to take them out once in a while just to air them out and make sure they're not getting too dry or too humid. But I recommend leather conditioner. Try that before trying to dye it.

Thank you so much for replying! Also what is your stance on dyeing a saffiano leather bag? Have you ever attempted this? I really appreciate your opinion and guidance
@itsHadrian
@itsHadrian 7 лет назад
+Ashley C hi! No worries!! I always try my hardest to reply to everything, and if I miss one of your comments please please please just message again 💛💛💛 also, saffiano is a little different to dye because of the finish. I recommend using angelus acrylic paint to paint it. Though you must make sure to use light even strokes so you keep it consistent. They actually sell a paint thinner which will make it easier for you. You just mix it in with some paint and go at it like normal. It'll keep it from gloving up too much. Also just wait a good hour or two before doing a second coat. It does dry quickly, but I find the longer you wait between coats, the more even it'll turn out. Hope this helps! 💛💛💛

Are you using just water and a rag to get the paint off the zipper?
@itsHadrian
@itsHadrian 5 лет назад
You can if you remove the paint right away. If you let it dry you can use nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol to get it off.

Have you used Angelus Navy blue? I have a yellow Coach bag that I'd love to dye. I just don't want a light navy but rather a deep rich navy blue. Thanks!
@itsHadrian
@itsHadrian 8 лет назад
Hi Karen! I have not used it, though I have used some other colors and I suggest using a good leather preparer (angelus is the best). If you were dying it black rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover would be okay, but the angelus leather preparer is cheap anyway. I believe the angelus navy blue is dark though, and applying 3-4 coats would make it appear much darker and probably the color you are trying to achieve. Also, try to apply the color as quickly and evenly as possible to get consistent color and coverage, though the darker colors are always easier (which navy is). Hmmmm... I'm trying to think of other tips for you, but I think that's it. Let me know if you have any more questions and I would love to see before and after pictures if you post any on instagram or make a video or anything, let me know!
