Here we are with a new Comparison! Welcome to another Through the Lenses Video! The series where we compare our VR headsets to see which one is the best, and which one is the right for you! This Episode is pretty special because we are gonna see with our eyes the pancake Lenses on the QUEST PRO comparing it with the Pico 4 and the Meta Quest 2, with the previous generation lenses all of them in PCVR.

ok upon actually watching the entire comparrison, the Quest 2 with its blue hue is.... most often the least good. But the others are not markedly better imo. Not enough to buy a new headset. In my opinion.

Impressed with the contrast of the pico 4. Some reviewers have said that it looks dull but in the video it looks pretty good. The pro looks more accurate though.

@@LarsAgerbk Yeah it's one of those things you need to try it to really know. Honestly in the video the Pro doesn't look that much better than the Quest 2 but in actual use it's a lot clearer and a lot better. I't really noticeable when going from the Pro down to the Quest 2 is when you notice the downgrade.

I'd say the fact they put a low density display in a 1.5k headset is astonishing.. They had a great opportunity to make the best VR solution ever and simply denied all the chances for it by putting such a low resolution display that you can even see the screen door effect again. Silly Meta.

@@FatNorthernBigot Personally I think they got tied up by XR2 chip and angry investors pushing for a release. Can't think of anything else that makes sense in this case. Now they are cutting staff, including VR division, so I guess no big hopes for sales of this thing. I want to believe they do better with Quest 3 though.

Thank Tyriel, glad to see more RU-vidrs doing the through-the-lens comparisons. I personally wish to see a standard desktop VR HMD with 4K per eye & pancake lenses in very light design that only contains tracking sensors that either are tied into a wireless unit with battery in a satchel design or web belt, or directly connected to your PC which frankly is all you need for flying and driving VR simulators. If you need to have a processing unit, do what Magic Leap has done and offload it to external unit you can wear. My bet is Apple and Valve will go in this direction, and wouldn't be surprised if you see a mini PC like Sony Playstation for the their upcoming PCVR as well. I for one am working on a AMD Ryzen based 6900HX that you can hook up a PC HMD to for mobile use. I am already able to play HL-Alyx with the Reverb 2 for about an 1.5 hours on a Li-ION battery pack. True we are talking lowest setting/ 70 fps, but I am ambulatory. I am looking to refine the battery system so you swap batteries without a shutdown and a shorter custom USB-C cable on a spring tension system to ensure cable it minimized when wearing using the upcoming Minisforum UM690.

4:10 Tyriel, do you use fixed aperture, asa and exposure time for the screenshots? If so, I wonder why the blacks look better in the Quest 2 than in the Quest Pro.

Great video, thanks for the time you take to do these Tyriel. Meta not using 2160 screens on the Quest Pro was a mistake. I guess they did it to ensure compatibility with existing titles, but the same resolution with clearer lenses was always going to look worse in some ways. Also the display tilt (cant) on the Pro makes for some unpleasing looking pixel arrangements.

Quest Pro is a Microsoft product through and through. Hololense software, and Hololens hardware. Meta had zero input to anything to do with it other than the sticker on the box and app integration. QuestPro is a XR device built to push better features over the failed HL2 in order to gauge consumer approach.

The backlight is probably the most surprising thing. Albeit, only obvious in situations where there is a white image. Also did not expect chromatic aberration with aspheric lenses, but I guess that has to do with their panel layout?

Great video. I'm sure youtube obscures some clarity as you say with compression, but the Quest 2 is still holding up if you currently own one. If not, the Pico looks like a no brainer though. Resolution is king for professional work, so the Pro is a misstep, however clear the lenses are.

Might be worthwhile redoing this now that with v51 ptc the Quest Pro has global PCVR Local Dimming. Big improvement in darkish areas in HLA and msfs night flying.

I don't understand this checkered pattern (rotated or not) I see in the highly magnified Quest Pro images. I wonder if the Quest Pro is using a non-traditional RGB subpixel arrangement. Or could it be an artifact caused by something else?

Tyriel, do you open up the Oculus Debug Tool and increase the bit rate and encode resolution for the wired link cable? It makes a dramatic difference to the visuals, making detail and text much sharper. I only have the Q2 but it doesn't appear that soft.

Thank you for this comparison! I would love to see a comparison of native Quest apps, not PC apps. I think it would be useful to remove the data compression of the PC data stream so that we’re all seeing the pure graphics being rendered on device. Thanks again!

I wouldn't say killer, I have both and they have their own issues. The pro is too heavy and the pixel density should have been upgraded. The Pico 4 gets cloudy lenses which is a wierd phenomenon, the black level is not so great due to the light bouncing inside the lenses but the weight is great and pixel density is good however the software needs improving asap as the store lacks exclusive apps

Meta messed up a bit by not providing a better resolution display on the Pro. Because now there are only a few ways this can go. When the Quest3 comes out, if it does not have a better resolution than the Quest2 (which turns out to be about the exact resolution as the Quest Pro), then the competitors are going to kill them; if the Quest3 has a better resolution, then it's gonna kill the Quest Pro. 😂😂

Resolution isn't everything and the Quest Pro LCD display has 37% percent more pixels per inch and 75% more contrast, with richer and more vibrant colors than the Quest 2. The Quest Pro's lenses vs the Quest 2 is a night and day difference. Also it is an enterprise focused product that can do things the Quest 2 simply can't, like the MR in color, face tracking, possibly full body tracking and controllers that have their own freaking snapdragon CPU's with camera's, and has overall better specs. Curious to see what the Quest 3 will look like tho.

I agree, if this was 3k x 3k per eye and allowed direct PCVR display input instead of compression, the Pro would be the champion for high-end PCVR gaming, pro applications, and at least sharper text as a monitor replacement.

This may be a silly question, but at what resolution were you running the Q2? And, would increasing the internal resolution of it match the Quest Pro level of detail, or is it a matter of the lenses used, rather than resolution?

They all look native, Q2 benefits a lot from supersampling and a proper link setup, but Tyriel never compares them like that, unfortunately. Would make much more sense to compare headsets at equal resolution of around 3000x3000 nowadays, as this is what is possible to pull on a current gen high end systems. QP has the same display as Q2, but as you can see optics is miles better. As an unfortunate result you can actually see the screen door effect in QP, it's a real shame they didn't put a higher density screen in Quest Pro...

Yeah, I was wondering the same. I'm running the Pico 4 via Virtual Desktop, at 2500x2500 in DCS, and everything is crystal clear. I tried VDs high setting of 3100x3100, but it hurts FPS quite a bit. Looks great though!

It would be cool if he could maybe post a different video really pushing the resolution of each device to the max, regardless of FPS, to truly compare the lenses quality.

@@riveraluciano I'm all for consistency hence my suggestion to pick the same render resolution for all headsets. This way you compare how good the picture will look with the same PC resources spent, that is actually what the majority is interested in. Everyone is going to supersample VR until their PC can't handle more. Take G1 vs G2 for example - they have essentially the same screens but different default resolution just because developer felt like it. It really doesn't make any sense to compare headsets at native resolution. On Quest 2 you can see improvements in clarity up to 3300x3300 per eye hence my suggestion to pick some ~3000x3000 (let's say per 110 degrees diagonal fov, basically ~27 ppd) as a baseline and do comparisons like that. Otherwise there are too many variables in the tests and they don't show a real use case.

I swapped my Quest 2 for a Pro but did first contemplate getting the Pico 4, I play PCVR 90% of the time and chose another Meta because I already have games for it and I wanted the face and eye tracking. The clarity on the Pro is unbelievable and you don't have to keep moving it about to stay in focus but for me the thing I couldn't do without now after upgrading is the self tracking controllers.

@@TheBigHugh correct, the quest pro controllers have their own IR sensors and IMU. Much more accurate than IR LED tracking, but still only 60hz.

so i just got a quest 2 and aside from it being a lot cleaner i still find myself using my cv1 for most of pcvr just because of how much faster and consistent it is to play over hdmi vs airlink or usbc.

Honestly, to me the Pico 4 image looks the best compared to the others, the Quest 2 has a blue tint and grayish blacks which makes it less contrasty and probably with less 3D depth...the Quest Pro is not sharp enough and has visible SDE so the Pico 4 is best according to this test video, I guess I should buy the Pico 4.

I actually prefer the quest 2's colours over the pico....if you look at other videos of the pico with games other than the ones show here , the pico is very over saturated and looks strange but in other games its far better than the quest 2 colours ???? Go figure lol , maybe optimizing issues or something. Also if you look , the blue sky your reffering to on the quest 2 footage is a different time of day as stated in the video lol. The best footage showing quest 2 's colours are better is in elite dangerous. I love this game and the planets rings are NOT yellowish like the pico is showing , also the orange control panel in game is NOT meant to be that bright..... Pico seems to put a yellowish tint on things and has an over saturation of colours .

@@nissan300zxtt9 I had the Quest 2...sold it like a year+ ago, so I know it had a blue tint overall regardless of any skies and the colors on it were magicless (also the 3D depth was off) and I already have the Pico 4 for a few days and I can clearly tell that I was right, it is really nicer than Q2 with its colors since they almost look like OLED with a bit less brightness or something but it looks definitely better than I expected it to look after some ppl said it is duller than Q2 which is totally wrong. Q2's blacks are more grayish as far as I can recall than those of P4...so colors wise (and BTW 3D depth wise) it is better for sure on P4 for sure, there is a magic to the P4 which should be felt in a VR experience which I felt was lacking in Q2 for some reason (probably the lifeless colors of Q2 + the not so good 3D depth and low FOV of it were making it so) And also, as for over saturation on Pico 4...nop, that's super wrong as well, I can guarantee you it is not over saturated on my Pico 4 at all, it looks more alive (OLED like) than Quest 2 but it surely isn't over saturated, it looks just fine in regard to saturation.

Hello Tyriel! Great Video! Got a quick question on the Pico 4. I bought the Startech CDP235APDM to be able to charge and connect wired earbuds at the same time. Strangely enough my microphone on the pico 4 hmd stops working ...so i can't talk to my friends anymore. Any idea how i can fix that? Or does the internal microphone always stop working if you connect the 3.5 jack? Maybe the device thinks it is a headset with microphone instead of simple earbuds???

The screen door is a result of better optics. But you are right in the sense that they skimmed on a display resolution.

@@endrow9991 Also true, they've already stepped in this in CV1 before - diagonal matrix ruins pretty much any attempts of antialiasing, there will be shimmering no matter what you do (take the DCS clouds for example, they are very sensitive to this). On top of that the majority of interfaces consist of vertical and horizontal lines (text, buttons, etc.), which will look soft because of this.

I found PICO4 to be really good for the money. It's almost as sharp as the Quest pro in some shots. Also I found that Pico 4 provides a lot of detail in the shadows, just like quest pro while quest 2 just darkens it a lot to a point where it's just solid black. The colour difference on the Pico to the others is a bit extreme. The pico 4 needs a bit more calibration, it they can keep the details in the shadows and still bring out more punchy colors then it would be awesome. Still Quest has an upper hand in terms of it's software and content. So I hope they make a quest 3 with better lenses, display and color passthrough for at least $500. Cause no matter how good it is 90% of us won't spent $1500 or even $1000 on a VR headset. Also if you already own a Quest 2...keep it. There's nothing out there to justify an upgrade at this time. Quest 2 is still holding up after 2 years...

what about rift S upgrade to a quest meta 2 or whatever the new quest is? i need replacement controller's on the rift S soon (they are glitchy and wiggle randomly when holding guns with 2 hands) and they are damn near as much as a new head set I'm seeing for a pair of Rift S controllers so I'm considering the new quest meta thing with a cord in it to use my GPU/CPU. i want it to utilize my gaming pc but have not read enough to know how it works. like if you plug it into a 3090 does it do better? vrs a 4080 ect?

@@ueehurstonsecurity8887 It's exciting times for VR so I suggest you hold on till October. The Quest 3 is coming out for $500. Has better hand and controller tracking + good quality color pass through. In my opinion, don't buy pico4 or Quest 2 right now, while the Quest 3 is just around the corner. It is a proper upgrade from all the previous headsets. And yes better graphics card can give you better results. via type C connection or wireless with wifi6 routers. The Quest3 is said to be better than the Quest pro which costs $1500. Quest 3 is only 40% more resolution than the Quest 2, soa 3090 or 4090 can easily handle that.

@@jorgesp4911 VR and the brand of your Graphics card don't matter at all. The only thing matters is processing power. Is your AMD card powerful enough to drive two high res displays at a smooth frame rate that's all that matters. As I have no personal experience with AMD cards I can't tell if their are any driver issues and such. The possibility for any such issues is real low. As long as its a powerful enough card you'll have a great experience.

Yup exactly, I still love the headset but it's a shame its only 1800 x 1920. The rest of the optical stack is 10/10 and it could have been the best PCVR headset ever with a slightly higher resolution and a displayport.

Yeah, that's what I'm seeing. The lenses make the SDE more visible. I don't get why they didn't go for a higher resolution and some upscaling?

@@GizmoMaltese because they are still using the XR2 gen 1 chip and performance would have been negatively affected. The Quest Pro is basically the same as Quest 1, a great proof of concept device that has been shipped without the processor to really run it properly. They will likely release the Quest Pro 2 within 12-18 months I reckon, 24 months absolute tops which will have the XR2 gen 2 chip and a much better resolution per eye.

@@GizmoMaltese Unfortunately, the XR2 even when fully clocked is only rated at 7 sensors. The XR2+ is just an XR2 with the memory moved so make it easier to cool and allow it to fully clock. The Quest Pro has 10 sensors. They've maxed out what the XR2 is capable of. The only way they were raising the resolution was by removing sensors and, sadly, Meta thinks face tracking is more important than visuals for VR.

Pico 4 was clearer in 2 examples but the Quest Pro took the rest. That said, the screen door effect was more pronounced on the Quest Pro. The colors of the Quest Pro were better as well.

It is visibly clear that quest pro has best lenses of all 3. You can notice this from the fact that sharp edges stay sharp and not blurry like other two. However, this increases sharpness in turn makes SDE more obvious at the same time. With a lens of this quality you need higher res display Imagine if QPro had 3K per eye display.

they both use pancake lenses, it just exacerbates the Quest Pro's low resolution but at least it has a larger sweet spot, but you'd expect far more for $1500.

Quest Pro is a little sharper, but with a little more screen door effect or something.. The Quest pro has better colors... ... As far as visuals go, doesn't make up the price.. Isn't better enough.. add to the fact that Tyriel says the pico 4 has a better FOV and it's a done deal

I've owned the Pico 4 for about a week. I feel i got very lucky in choosing the P4. I know nothing about VR head sets and choose the P4 based on peoples recommendations. Considering it's price point i feel i would have had to buy a head set at twice the price to compete with it. So i'm very happy with the P4.

What is so weird is the fact when zoomed in with any headset you can see SDE and they all look pretty bad. The Quest 2 doesn't even look too bad in colors and it looks more blended even zoomed in than the other two. I don't know how it looks personally cause I haven't tried it but I already have a $400 headset to use don't want to spend $1500 or even another $400 more unless it's really an upgrade like OLED and bigger FOV. Maybe when OLED gets to 2800x2800 each eye it will look so good in VR then what we have now. Looking forward to see what the PSVR2 is going to look like.

Hey Tyrel could you test your through the lenses videos with the headsets BRIGHTNESS set to MINIMUM? And also mention this each time. Because the screens colours look better when brightness is set to minimum. Thank you!

unfortunately, it would be impossible to show a good image with low brightness, I would have to crank up the ISO with the camera and that would degrade the image quality quite a lot.

@@Tyrielwood The problem is that brightness slider from minimum to maximum only barely makes the image more bright in Quest 2 (that I have). Another youtuber (Karl Gosling here iirc ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ao9Fq985DHg.html ) said that Pico has good colors but you need to not crank the brightness up but actually lower it as much as possible and this adjustment is usually misunderstood (something I remember from old TVs also) as it controls just how the white appears and not the actual brightness of the screen. For Quest 2 it barely makes a difference from minimum to maximum but a lot of banding goes away and blacks and colors look even better. At least you could try it yourself and mention it in future videos if you confirm his observations. Thanks for your videos and reply!

The only thing those clarity lenses enhance on the Quest pro is the screen door effect... it is too strong for me on the 3 models, but maybe that problem will be solved on next generation VR headset...

I cant comment on the Pico havent tried yet. I have been using the Quest Pro for a coulpe weeks. Just switched to Quest 2 to compare and its a big difference. The Quest 2 is still a great headset but you really notice the difference after playing in Quest Pro. .

Thanks to the pico 4s wireless and because pico didnt gump their wireless like meta did you can actually avoid compression in almost all cases with the pico by just upping the bitrate

i own both quest 2 and pico 4. in terms software capabilities i think quest 2 is legendary. blurriness/sharpness not that much difference. if you use wirelink.. quest 2 is still superior than pico 4. pico 4 link using the cable is still blurry. u need to use virtual desktop for pico 4... my gpu is rtx3090. but the frame rate on pico 4 is better, but not that much difference than... quest 2. Quest 2 is superior in its update.

Well at 53 my eyes cant tell the difference on these through the lens jobbies half the time. Have to say though the Pico looks the sharpest.. Really looking forward to you getting ya face into a Pimax Crystal though, more than anything.. You are jumping in aint ya? I know Mr VR TV is on the release roadshow in Munich, cant remember if you are attending any venue somewhere? I'd like both of your impressions, I count both of your opinions important and will buy/not buy based on your findings.. Man I hope its as good as its advertised..

I find that streaming to the pc via virtual desktop to be too inconsistent with performance especially with flight simming. Latency latency latebcy. A direct link cable seems to be the best way to go imo

Well, i have quest 2 and quest pro, and after using quest pro with those epic tracking controllers and much much clearer lenses, I could never go back to my quest 2. Pricy... yes! But for a vr enthusiast like me, every penny worth it 😊 Pro is for me so comfortable and with a good balance in the weight. Pico does look like the best value for money, but I have such a big gaming library on quest store, so sticking with it. Hope Quest 3 is the perfect solution with quest pro controllers. And just have to give it up again for those controllers, they are so good with perfect tracking, and for a legendary tales addict, the bow gameplay with these just rocks!
