Anil Ananthaswamy is an award-winning journalist and former staff writer for New Scientist magazine. He has also written for Nature, Nautilus, Matter, The Wall Street Journal, National Geographic News, and the UK’s Literary Review. His first book, The Edge of Physics, was voted book of the year in 2010 by Physics World, and his second book, The Man Who Wasn’t There, won a Nautilus Book Award in 2015. His most recent book is just out: Through Two Doors at Once.
Anil presents the 200 year old, simple double slit experiment and hints at its profound reach, which is explored more fully in his book. In this talk, Anil walks us through the Mach-Zehnder Interferometer as the theoretical foundation for Interaction-free measurement, which he illustrates with the Elitzur-Vaidman bomb-testing problem.

I read "Through Two Doors at Once" and there's a part in the book where one physicist says about the wave function"a human breath can collapse the wave function also footsteps in the same room can collapse the wave function."However what really happened was every time that physicist looked at the wave function to check it's state he collapsed the wave function.

if there was a way to construct 4 unique states between d1 and d2 (ie. 00,01,10,11) and miniaturize this design, would this gate configuration be more powerful than a 2 state on/off transistor?

De Broglie is pronounced like Debroy (similar to destroy), the g is silent.

I don't quite get the bomb experiment. Why don't the duds block photons? The graphic shows them missing fuses - is that meant to be taken literally?

Doesn't the Mach-Zehnder interferometer imply ftl communication? Forgive ignorance where it occurs. First I will assume that the probability function of detection is collapsed when an object (bomb detonator) is in the path of the photon at the moment in time at which a "collision" between the photon and detonator would take place. I.e. if the photon does not take the path in which the detonator is blocking it, if the detonator is in place for collision at the time in which the photon would have collided with it (if it took the path of collision) the photon Will be interfered with. Further, if it is not in place at that point in time, the probability is not collapsed. Under these assumptions, you could use the bomb detonator to communicate 1's and zeros (through probabilities on groups of photons sent, 100% as 1, 75% as 0) and the probability result of the group can be communicated ftl, since the detonator can be put into place as the photon group is traveling towards the second beam splitter.

Anil should NOT come forward on out-of-body experiences and the afterlife.. It takes to have experienced it YOURSELF and FIRST-HAND to know.. Plus SCIENCE is too LIMITED to talk or advance anything on the afterlife. Anil should just realize he DOESN'T know ..he doesn't know (in the "spiritual' so-called 'paranormal' realm and domain for lack of a better word). Voilà.
