Throw & Go Soundcheck On A Midas M32C. First Gig Of 2021!

This is my first gig of 2021! The dance band has 9 pieces with 9 separate IEM mixes. I am mixing FOH and their ears. The venue was a bit of a challenge. It was a large room with no acoustic treatment with less than 150 people. This was a "throw & go" show with only a simple line check performed at a quiet level. Enjoy!

You have a excellent disposition and technical techiness (technical word). I used to do sound for a large community theater growing up along with sound for bands and large jazz bands. But it was all analog. Big mixers. All manual. Would have a 14 piece orchestra in the pit with 18 body mics - performers in and out off and on. You’d have to fade their mic for lines every other word would be a different level different eq when they would get close to another performers mic… Countryman b6 in the hair or side. All Shure wireless. You’d have to know the show better than anybody. Lighting goes cue to cue maybe 2-4 per scene. Sound is a linear constant. There are side cues for things like sfx but it’s like how good you want the mix to be depends on how much you ride the levels. It’s a constant ever changing beast (performers). Heavily mood dependent… type of moon… if there were snacks in the green room that night. I’d try to listen to mics while they’re getting ready to judge who I’d need to pay the most attention to that night. I wish I had pitch changers some days. Now I mix for film and tv. I edit picture which of course includes sound but at the end go to large mix stages and have the pros do it. The Oscar winners. But sometimes I get in positions where I find myself remastering a films mix due to not being able to any other way. It’s a nice skill to be able to go into it and know enough to do what you need to do. And pass QC. I really wish I would have known how to forge a career path doing Broadway sound. That’s a hard group to get into. Even now knowing tons of Broadway people it would still be hard. But they make great money and are the best of the best. The path is (so I hear) is to go to just a few schools, colleges , upstate ny and I forget where the other is. And do very well. They have sound theater programs. And then take a apprenticeship with a Broadway mixer. I guess. I thought about fullsail for a brief while growing up. Then I saw how much touring sound designers mixers make and was like ah no thank you. Touring Broadway shows need good mixers. They always suck.

Good job, Thankyou for this video. Really most practical and economical M32C + DL32 than M32R, cause the tablet is finally the procedure to mixing the band more used and effective if is not possible ubicate te mixer into the public (and buy Stagebox separety). I´m using XR12 and cosiderate buy M32C and DL16 in an future, realiy best price for high quality preamps, and features not supered for other mixers that have very more hight prices. The acrilic shield for the microphones is interesanty, I will try it for reduce feedback from room reflexions I think that can is his funtion. Greatings from Spain.

Hey Billy. Thank you for taking the time to post these videos! I love how you post the good, bad, and pickyness of doing live sound in the real world brother! Quick question. I'm upgrading to a m32c - dl32 setup and for the life of my I'm struggling to find the app you are using for an android tablet. I'm used to using mixing station but was hoping to try out the native app.

Hey Daniel. Thanks for reaching out! In this video I’m using 2 apps: the DBX Venu360 and the M32 mix app. Just want to make sure we are talking about the same thing. Not sure about the Android world. Crazy that the normal M32 control isn’t available. I need to check out Mixing Station, a lot of people have been mentioning it.

@@DMDIGITALSPHOTOGRAPHY The easiest thing to do is to set up a matrix output from your stereo buss. If you wanted to record your mix, you can take the matrix outputs and hard patch them into input channels. If you were multi-tracking, this would give you a print of your live mix to use for future use.

Do you have the tops and subs linked? I find it fast if you induce the feedback by pushing the gain on the mic little by little. All in all great work.
@billylaguardia
@billylaguardia 2 года назад
In this set up, the system processor provides 6 outputs: Full range (tops) L&R, Sub L&R, and 2 mono press feeds for video. All of the outputs are separate so they can be processed individually. I ring out the subs and tops separately per the room to have a basic “flat” system at the processor. Any additional room eq is then added via the master buss. Thanks for your comment, Francis!

Perhaps the Vocal mics we're a bit low, but the how the planner came about it was uncalled for. Especially since they did not actually give you a proper 15 minute soundcheck instead of their hour long cocktail. You did a great job nontheless, got the job done and the event flowing. Perhaps the planner should be nicer. Question: In hindsight, you think turning up the gain a bit on the inputs of the vocals would've helped when given the chance at setup? I always follow the good gain rule, and fader to level off.
@djrockwell5722

Youre right, sounding low and sounding horrible is 2 different situations. All the planner had to say was, people in the back couldnt hear the singing is it possible to turn them up. Not its sounded horrible.

Most of the venues we play are about the size of the venue in the video. The RCF system has performed very well. The only issue I have ever had was the ribbon cable coming disconnected between the amp module and its power supply. It was an easy fix on the show site, you just need an Allen wrench to remove the module.

Hey just curious, how much of a role does that Driverack actually play in your rig. I’ve been curious about adding one to mine. There’s already so many great tools in the M32C though.
@billylaguardia
@billylaguardia 2 года назад
I mostly used it to free up physical outputs since we run so many ear mixes. I had the drive rack configured to handle left, right, sub, front fill, and a mono press feed. I’ve been lazy lately and haven’t felt like carrying it. So I am just using the matrices on board at the moment. I haven’t missed the drive rack to be honest
@rodaliste
@rodaliste 2 года назад
Why do you prefer to process your PA with the DriveRack instead of the M32C internal processors?
@billylaguardia
@billylaguardia 2 года назад
I had a few shows with this band where I needed all the physical XLR outputs on the DL32 for monitors. The DriveRack allowed me to only take L/R out of the DL and leave outputs 1-14 available. The DriveRack handled L/R main, L/R sub, and a stereo video feed.

I generally do use the internal matrices. I have another video showing this configuration. I was using the DBX unit for this run of shows because I needed 14 XLR outputs on the DL32 for stage mixes. The DBX gave me the additional system outputs required.

I was using a DBX Venu360 for a few runs of shows to handle the PA processing instead of internal matrices. The second iPad controlled the Venu360 which was the time alignment, EQ and crossover points of the PA.

You ever have any issues with those GLXD and the router interfering with each other?
@billylaguardia
@billylaguardia Год назад
No issues with the router. However the GLXD mics have very sensitive antennas on the handhelds. If someone is holding the mic from the bottom and blocking the antenna, the mics will cut out. I’ve never had this problem with any other Shure wireless product.
@Jalex12909
@Jalex12909 Год назад
@@billylaguardia Ah okay, nice. The reason I ask is, as per Shure, the router and wireless units should be at least 10 feet away from each other to avoid shortening the signal of the units. No other unit on the Shure line runs into 2.4GHZ, (and on that note, they even discontinued the GLXD line as of this year). I was just curious ?3cause I have 6 of the same ones and have that problem from time to time. Awesome content!

Our goal is the lowest stage volume possible. The only acoustic sound coming from the stage are the drums and horns. We play a huge variety of rooms ranging from purpose built music venues to rustic barns. Often times we don’t have enough room for the small set up we have. So keeping the band on IEMs and the instruments DI’d allow us to have a small footprint with a low stage volume in all situations.
