I think he wants to prove himself with the extra playing time. He actually said as much, which is a bit surprising given how uber humble he's been since he started his deferring days after NJ. He may very well view the first 2/3s of the season as an audition for a contender so he can be the missing piece for the Warriors or whoever faces them in a trade.
