Throwing a spherical round Korean type pottery Vase on the wheel

I thought I'd have a go at making a round ball shaped vase after one of my subscribers sent me a photo of a Korean Pot that they had seen.
This was a bit tricky and took me longer than my usual 5 minutes because you really need to collar the clay in the pot in from a wide position.
Anyway for a first attempt I was quite pleased with the end result and the shape was quite nice.
I'll be throwing a few more similar to this in the future.
Apparently you can make them from porcelain and put a candle inside and they glow white,hence the name sometimes of a moon jar.

make a cylinder. then put your hands on in as you would if you were pulling up the walls. bend the ends up your fingertips on the inside while supporting the outside and pushing out with your bent finger tips and you go up. and instead up pulling up, you pull in kind of a curve. best it can be explained through a comment haha

actually it is because he pulls up so quickly, it causes unevenness in the thickness of the walls, but not so much as it compromises the structure of the vessel.

How did you push out the wall so much without it falling apart? You have very little clay on the bottom supporting the piece. I keep ending up with an egg shape. Any tips? Thanks!

If there's a shop or store or something that you can access that has one of those mop buckets that you can pedal to spin, get that and then fix a plant pot base to it and voila! You have a wheel. That's what I'm doing!

@carsyntravis635 8 лет назад
+Csenge Laszlo This comment was a while ago and I don't know if you'll get this or care, but based on the way he throws the clay down on the wheel in the beginning of the video, I'm going to say left-handed. Imagine trying to throw clay in the "center" of a wheel with your non-dominant hand.
@sylasviper715
@sylasviper715 8 лет назад
+Carsyn Travis Lol, i use my non-dominant hand to center the clay...
@carsyntravis635
@carsyntravis635 8 лет назад
Oh, I meant that he literally throws the clay down onto the wheel, trying to hit it in the center. But now that I really look at it, he wears his watch on his left hand. The non-dominant hand wears the watch for MOST people.

In another video he mentions that the clay he uses is sourced locally in the UK, and for whatever reason it can accept more water without losing plasticity. However, I agree with you. It is best to throw with less water and by using ribs more often for shaping instead of water.
