Throwing a Lidded Soup Tureen / Terrine on the wheel ( depending on the UK or US spelling).
This is really just a casserole thrown on a taller base than normal on the wheel.
A gallery is made for the lid to sit in by pushing down with your index finger half way across the rim to form a ledge.
The lid is a shallow dish thrown upside down and then turned later and a knob thrown on the top.

I swear your videos are my favourite throwing videos I've found. I wish I could sit with you in studio for a week and learn from you. Thank you for sharing.

I love how it doesn't even matter what language is spoken everyone in the comments just wants to thank you for your work-work that they won't ever see

When I started woodturning an old man told me "There''s only two things you need to get right, shape and form, if you get those right you've got something worth looking at". I wish I had your eye for shape and form. Best Wishes, Brendan.

Dan, I have been on a wheel on and off for a few years and I have to say, you make me look like an idiot child but in the best way. Thanks for the instruction! If you're in England, I'll be there in a few months, might run into you. Take care!

You make it look all so easy and effortless...but I know damn well it isn't, lol! I love watching your videos! No pressure or nuffin, but I watch every little move you make with your hands and how you shape the clay, in the hope that I will be able to do a halfway decent job if ever I get to play with a wheel someday. For now, I have to be content with hand building, which I am not a fan of. I love and prefer the perfect symmetry of a turned piece. Wheels are so goddamn expensive though...even second hand! I've been looking! Thank you for sharing your craft with the world. Your efforts are appreciated more than you know.

I took two semesters of wheel throwing and handbuilding at the local community college, but I think I need to come see you for some lessons, as you make it seem so effortless. I used to watch your vids and try to emulate what you did on the wheel at school, but I could never quite make them look as good as yours. Keep up the good work...you have many a fan here in the US, judging by the comments! I may have to send away for one of your pieces one of these days...I really liked you moon jar!

Great work. Thanks for sharing. It helps me to do better. I tried to copy your hand mostions but it didn't work. haha Looks so easy the way you do it. I am going to make some of these, smaller version for soup bolwes. I wish that you would show your hand more because I can do the centering fast but it gets uncentered whan I try to open it.

(I'm trying to identify your accent. Sheffield? Yorkshire?) I really like your throwing, and getting the gallery out of the way first. Very clever. I'm totally trying this. I'm assuming the bowl is open into the pedestal, and it isn't a bowl sitting on a tall foot that will be trimmed out later?

Beautiful tureen, Dan could I ask to see a video on glazing, firing and then the finished piece ?? Inspirational videos my man !!
@IngletonPottery
@IngletonPottery 10 лет назад
Mutha does all the glazing and she's camera shy. Firing isn't exciting, we're not a hippy pottery where we cut our own wood down and spend 3 days stoking the kiln whilst talking about Japanese Raku and drinking cider ....lol.. Our kilns are electric, it's really dull. I'll do a slideshow of some of the pots though soon if I don't sell them before. Cheers, dan.

I notice that when you attach your cylinder-shaped lump to the wheel to begin with, you throw it on the long side. I would have attached it on the short side so that I'd start with a cylinder instead of a log. Is there a reason why you do that? Just wondering.

When you throw large amounts of clay do you rarely encounter air pockets as your pulling up? is that because you really spend time wedging the clay beforehand? Somehow I get them a lot, I poke my way out of it haha but it doesn't go nice sometimes.
@Neldidellavittoria
@Neldidellavittoria 9 лет назад
Christian Sanchez Yes, you do need to wedge a lot, concentrating on the work. Probably you need to hone your wedging skills a bit. Also, there are different styles of wedging; you can try them and find the one you feel more comfortable with. If you do find an air bubble try bursting it with a pin.

how do you dry your pieces before trimming? do you cover them up with plastic? I'm still trying to figure out the best way to store a piece without it getting too dry or wet. thanks!
@IngletonPottery
@IngletonPottery 10 лет назад
It's a bit of trial and error really. Let them dry out just about as much as you want then cover with polythene and trim them at your leisure. We have a damp cold room in the Pottery where all the pots go at night so they don't dry out much more. Cheers, Dan.

No need to, if you do it properly and don't let things dry out too much you don't need to score anything. And what is paper slip ? , must be a School thing maybe ? Cheers, Dan.
@ClayKidpjc
@ClayKidpjc 10 лет назад
youdanxxx paper slip is slip mixed with tiny bits of toilet paper that make the slip a bit stronger, it's mostly used for repairing cracks on pieces in the leather hard to bone dry stage so they can with stand the bisque and prevent further cracking. I suppose you could use paper slip to join thingns together but normally regular old slip will do the job
