Sometimes it's surprising how a simple cleaning can solve mechanical problems. Of course, once your handle is off, you could easily replace it by reversing these steps.

Thanks for this video! It gave me the courage to try fixing our door by myself! I ended up having to completely disassemble it because a spring mechanism was loose, but I'm proud to say once I saw it, it was an easy fix and not as daunting as I thought it was going to be!!

Thanks for explicitly sharing your observations & thought process. Many experts are not teachers and take for granted the little steps they forget to pass along. You’re right about the cleaning. My front door Baldwin thumb latch would not easily depress. Opened it up to find both a spider egg nest AND an old mud wasp installation! A good brush out and puff or two of graphite and I feel so empowered! Thank you.

I think I actually saw them selling graphite at my local Dollar Tree. Like everything, I was thinking about buying it but have to check my supplies first because I'm pretty sure I have some.

Amazing! I used WD-40. I took the part outside and sprayed everything. I let it soak for a while, then used Q-tips to get into the parts to clean out all the dirt and gunk. Wiped everything off real good. Put it all back together and I was amazed! I’ve been fighting with this door for months. It now opens the way it should. I am not a carpenter by no means & your video really helped me! Thank you!

The brass piece is the problem. It's too soft and that cup shape should be a half moon. The mechanism wears into it and the turning of the handle will open the latch less and less. Adjusting and cleaning will help slightly but it will only be temporary. It's a poor design; that piece should be hardened and the contact surface is too small resulting in high pressure at the contact point.
@ameranadianveteran860
@ameranadianveteran860 2 года назад
Holy smokes!!!! You are right on! Just pulled the mechanism apart. There is a pile of metal dust beneath it. The half-moon part gouged an obvious notch into the piece that actuates the mechanism! You can easily compare the 2 sides of the piece to see the difference! What engineer chose soft metal for this part!? That’s shameful as far as I’m concerned. I’m going to have to get a new piece from the manufacturer or a whole new unit.I wish I could post a picture as mine is wickedly obvious. Junk metal.

Worked for me!! Thanks for this 👍🏼 I was going to dismantle and determine why, but fell on this video just as I was about to start taking it out. Ended up cleaning everything out with brake cleaner (lever part, the other parts as well). Then added oil and WD40 to everything that I thought needed it. Moves smoothly now. That gunk probably added up everywhere messing with the tolerances.

Oil an wd40 is a good idea. Oil to lubricant and wd40 to keep the water out since thats what its really for, no really a lubricant. Thats actually what wd stands for water displacement 40 different uses. Believe thats what the 40 is. Definitely what the wd stands for.

I'm a locksmith. The problem is that latches worn-out. Like another person commented it's not a half moon anymore it's actually getting those outer edges where the half moon was eating away so the longer you use it the more it will eat away and eventually it will not work any longer and you will be forced to replace the latch.
@AverageMe
@AverageMe 2 года назад
I'm sure you're right, but if we can clean it and get a little more use out of it, I'll go for that. Thanks for your comment, I'll be trying my hand at re-keying a lock soon! Maybe it'll give you a laugh, maybe a thumbs up.
@keithwhatley5094
@keithwhatley5094 2 года назад
@Average Me oh yeah there's no need to replace it prematurely. You did the same thing I would have done. You won't have a trouble doing a rekey. It's not complicated, there's just a little bit of dexterity involved.
@larryb51
@larryb51 Год назад
Ha ha! If I had read all the comments I would have come to this conclusion a lot sooner. BTW, the thumb style handle this entry door causes this latch to wear primarily on one side because the thumb lever rotates the shaft one direction only. Rotating the interior knob would bet the latch open all the way turning it one direction, but only part way the other. Unfortunately, that won't help some one stuck outside on a cold winter's night. I decided to replace it before one of the kids got lock out!

The wd gel is good, but in a situation where dust and stuff collect the gel may hold more grit and grim. If it happens again try something that dried but still lubricates. Like a dry graphite spray. But good job taking it apart and fixing it yourself. Always good to hear stories of independent woman repairing and replacing stuff themselves.
