Host: OnGrid

Tires: RE-71RS (1st day and heat cycled by TR)
Track day 54
Setup changes:
Hood vents
This day marks the end of my 2nd year doing HPDEs, and it was a fun one. Weather was hot, and track temps were in the 90s. Grip was hard to find, and I think I was down on power with IATs so high. On the bright side, it was the perfect shakedown for my hood vents. Big thanks to Al from RaceLouvers for the consultation, and PTech for the awesome work as always. I wasn't expecting the vents to completely remove the need for cooldown laps, but the car most definitely gets rid of the heat supa fast now. Well worth it, and now my grocery getter looks like an actual track car so that's a plus I guess. I should start slapping on some track decals too.
It's been over 6 months since I've been at east, so it took a while to get used to the speeds again. I'm now much more aggressive on the throttle and brakes, and I'm way more comfortable on the high speed corners. 84 min on T1 might be the fastest I've taken it, and there's at least 2-3 mph more there. My T3 sucks, not really sure how to take it. T4 can be way faster, but I think I need to be more aggressive on the turn-in and trust in the grip. My bypass is definitely way better than before. My T6 still sucks, and T8 is now a big problem but not of the bravery kind. With how much bite the C21s have compared to the CPs, I'm overslowing it. I'm not sure if I can use less brakes because I need enough weight on the nose. I think if I improve my T6, I'll carry more speed into it, which might do the trick. More work is needed on the rest of the corners, but I'll figure those out later. My driving on west was pretty bad. Not much else to say. At least I had fun sliding around.
I probably won't do another track day for 1 or 2 months because I'm redoing my suspension. Verkline rear arms and bushings, Turner FLCAs, and replacing my Ohlins with JRZs 2WR with a lot more spring rate. I'm super excited for these changes, but also nervous because we're going even deeper into unknown territory on this chassis.
As always, thanks to OnGrid for a fun day and all the red group drivers for keeping it clean.

Your confidence sliding is so much better than a year ago. 👏

I'm curious what your mod list is! I'm debating selling off my Golf R for a m340i and wanna start tracking it haha.

I wouldn't get an m340i just to track it. A supra is better in every single way.

How much tire did you chew through in one day doing both East and West? You've run the 71RS more than I have, but I've found if I've done a slide in them for a lap, I'd need to take a cool down lap for them to somewhat recover. Seeing some of those segments where you're sawing at the wheel reminds me of how I used to drive the GR Supra...when I reflected back on those experiences, I agree that when that starts happening, its time to call it and do a mental reset and a tire temp reset too - everything is far too hot at that point.

I'd say I have about 50% life left. They look really f'd up after. I'm thinking 7 sessions at high temperatures with hardly any breaks in between and lots of sliding should count as 2 days' worth of normal temp track days. I find that the 71RS doesn't really recover during a session. My cooldown laps were more for the oil and water temps. I also ended some of the east sessions early because there wasn't much time before the next west session, and my tires were just so hot at that point (3 out of the 4 at 170+F). I didn't want to ruin them on their first day. If it was just a normal track day at east, I'd probably have done more laps just to practice car control.

@@chrispy28 Wow thats a lot of wear but based on the videos and what you've just shared, I'm surprised it wasn't more. I also agree they don't really recover within a session once they've gotten warm. Thats why they still are in the category of hero time attack tire. 170F is proper warm - also a reminder of my Supra days haha. Thanks for sharing the data and the footage as always. Keep forging ahead and excited for your build and your skill to progress!

@@nodrogkam FYI I just checked a couple of my tires, and I'm seeing ~4/8" left, which is more wear than my first 2 track days on the previous set (sonoma and thill west). I'll probably only get 2 more days out of this set haha...😥
