Have you ever had trouble Tig Welding a gap..? Well today I give myself the BIGGEST headache contending with the most absurd gap I could come up with... My apologies for the foul language in this one.... Spoiler alert...it did not go well....But I DID have a ton of fun, and I'm actually pretty happy that I pulled it off. So, I hope you can have a laugh with me, and don't take this one too seriously, as I said in the episode, I'm all about having fun and goofing around on this channel.
Check out my friend Max's RU-vid channel and show him some love!

As a fitter that is also my own welder i can tell you. When i tack something up with any gap what so ever its because the blue print was wrong. And i had to leave the gap to make sure the end result is the right size. I also enjoy the challenge of welding up a gap so it's fine.

That 0.437 gap weld in aluminum was good. Most experienced welders would have had just as bad results with 7/16 gap. In reality you would never come across this when building anything.
@melgross
@melgross 3 года назад
Other than for the impurities coming out, it’s really fine for the gap, I’ve seen, and done worse. I’m wondering whether the impurities are just on the surface. If so, a little sanding and maybe only polishing will get rid of it. It won’t affect the weld quality.
@PacificArcTigWelding
@PacificArcTigWelding 3 года назад
All good:) Was fun to give it a whirl. Tough not to have impurities and stuff happening I guess for such a big gap. Looks like I’m getting the grinder out!😂🍻

We had to regularly fill gaps like that when I was making aluminum pontoons for a boat manufacturer. Just gotta weave it in there and maybe make a second pass with little to no filler just to tidy it up aesthetically from time to time

I have had luck wire brushing a weld like that and then running back over it at about 40 Hz with just a little more filler to get some freeze lines back into it. Pedal pulsing can give slight freeze lines, but not really enough to make it look "good".

Interesting video. Suggestion. Can you put the material thickness on the screen or in the description. Also can you display the actual foot pedal amps on screen. This will be useful for us beginners that might want to record these values before trying to weld similar material. I know you displayed amps on previous video which was great. Thanks Mike
