Chris and I are going to put my short/soft field technique to the test at Quartz Creek "airport" (more like a gravel strip).

Your sound editing from 3:20 to 5:05 is Oscar worthy - music, rush of the waterfall, the clicking fishing poles, the tyres rolling on gravel; I was in Alaska for a minute there. Great pointers for short/soft field ops.

The analogy that came to mind as Chris briefed his technique of unsticking the nose gear, seemed to be somewhat of a similar approach to “getting on the step” with a seaplane. The point being, erasing the stickiness by getting the nose light, then a slight pitch forward to build airspeed for the eventual zoom climb past the obstacle, once rotation has taken place. I may be way off with my understanding, but that’s what the technique sounded like to me. I certainly don’t have the amount of proficiency either of you two gents have earned through your years of flight experience. Awesome video series, Josh. Well Done! 😎👍

Really impressive what a mostly ordinary Skyhawk will do. Great video Josh. I have been to Alaska twice in the past year on vacation but not flying. I have a 172E model based out of SoCal. I am so interested in the performance and flying techniques you and Chris are showing. I love the six cylinder Continental 0-300 but know I am at a disadvantage power wise at 145 HP compared to the 160 or 180 HP on the newer models. Your videos show me that with proper technique it is possible to get more out of my aircraft and I need to seek out an instructor like Chris who can help me with this. Much of my flying is in mountains or higher elevations such as Arizona. I know better than to push the limits but hopefully I can widen my envelope a little with some proper instruction. Thank you for the great videos. P.S. I realize now I have been very lethargic on my "Clear Prop" announcement and will strive to do better like Chris in the future.

Great channel. Thanks for sharing all your experiences. I'm busy with my MPL and will then move on to my PPL(starting small😀). I was wondering why you don't accelerate while on the break to get the engine rpm up and then release the brake to have a more accelerated take off?
@AeroworksProductions
@AeroworksProductions 5 лет назад
Fine balance between usable runway and protecting the prop from gravel but I would have opted for turning around at the very end, brakes on until the power had come all the way up prior to brake release. Rolling into the take off uses a lot of usable runway in a short filed take off.
@angleofattack
@angleofattack 5 лет назад
Aeroworks Productions Disagree. You can come around a corner with more energy than holding still. Plus, a prop will pull up rocks and cause dings in the prop. An expensive practice in the long run
@AeroworksProductions
@AeroworksProductions 5 лет назад
@@angleofattack Like I said a balance of protecting the prop and preserving the usable runway. Was always taught when I learned to fly in Alaska 20 years ago, "There is no such thing as an emergency take off".
@finneire2358
@finneire2358 5 лет назад
Have to agree with AoA. That was a soft field take-off primarily. Keep rolling so the aircraft doesn’t bed in, especially in a tight 180 degree turn. The soft field take-off technique calls for a rolling take-off, adding power as speed increases so as not to kick up stones onto the prop and tail. It’s in the POH to be fair.
@AeroworksProductions
@AeroworksProductions 5 лет назад
@@finneire2358 Which is why Alaska has as many small plane crashes as the rest of the US combined in a single year. There is the POH and there is experience. Tundra tires on fairly hard packed gravel isn't the same as stock tires on grass. Lower 48 pilots don't usually understand AK flying unless you've done it.
@finneire2358
@finneire2358 5 лет назад
Aeroworks Productions Perhaps. But that Quartz Creek field is more Soft Field than Short Field. Isn’t a short field take-off where you climb out at Vx once that speed is reached? Chris and Josh here basically level off in ground effect until 90-odd mph? The known tailwind in the video didn’t help in reducing the ground roll but as Angle of Attack said in the video, he’d rather a tailwind to avail of the greater TODA towards the lake end than a headwind the other direction. A rolling take-off also uses less ground roll than a static start. (Assuming the roll is commenced from a rolling 180 degree turnaround or adjacent taxiway) Adding full power on a static start uses more ground compared to a rolling start not to mention the prop/tail damage. It’s also hard to correlate the stats between AK incident rates and lower 48 ones. It appears, in my opinion, the only thing they could’ve done better in that take-off is delay the backtrack turnaround a bit. Like mentioned.

@paulbergman8228
@paulbergman8228 4 года назад
With the larger nose wheel, the angle of attack of the wing causes lots of drag not normally experienced in a standard C172 with stick tires. When the power is applied, I observed the nose strut bottoms out, so is that hard on the nose gear apparatus? If the take-off roll was started without the yoke full back, there would be a lot less drag to start. It just doesn’t seem like those gravel strips are that soft, but maybe a little tacky with the slim. Soft to me is wet grass with some length, so have to try some of the gravel strips here in Washington to see what would be the difference in the performance by altering the duration of full elevator on the T-O roll. At least is was very entertaining....😎

Hey Josh, Can you give more details about the T/O performance? The aircraft looked to be struggling to fly and certainly to gain height. How heavy were you, density altitude of the field, etc.? I tried to replicate this today, but we were light: C172N; flaps 10; 23 gallons; 440lbs between me and front seat PX; no one in back; field is 155ft MSL; 17 Celsius. Staying in ground effect proved virtually impossible. Held some back pressure from the start of the roll to protect the nose wheel, then rotated very slightly at 48kts and immediately held the nose down as she lifted. I intended staying level in ground effect, but she wanted to fly and while (almost) level, she was at 20ft virtually instantly, so out of ground effect and accelerating w/o problem. Left me wondering why yours looked like she was struggling. Thanks, Gareth.
