This is my overview and review of the Tikka T1X MTR in 17 HMR. I do some accuracy testing, discuss the good and the bad, as well as some changes that I've made.
The groupings were 5 shot groups with:
Federal Premium V-Shok - 17gr
Hornady XTP - 20 gr
Hornady VMAX - 17 gr
CCI VMAX - 17 gr
Chassis - KRG Bravo
Optic - SWFA SS 16x42
Rings - Warne
Bolt Knob - Dragon Scale Short from Anarchy Outdoors
Bipod - BT46-LW17 PSR Atlas Bipod
Wrapped with Multicam "Camo Form"

Accuracy at 50 yards? Give me a break, spare me the good editing, audio, lighting and other details, just show me the 5-shot groupings at 100 yards. 17hmr goes flat up to 125 yards, so a full test should cover 100/125/150/200 yard accuracy.

Maybe it’s his D+ version of Jim Carrey with facial exaggerations and horrific accents. We’ll just ignore traveling out to a 9,000 square mile desert to send the HMR out to 50 yards. Might as well take the Red Rider to Knob Creek.

good review, thanks .. I own both T1Xs (22LR and 17HMR).. both in factory std MTR stocks ... the hummer will shoot head to head as-is vs my Anshutz 1517AV at 100 yards, (not shabby), but the 22LR falls a tad behind my CZ 457 MTR @ 50 yards.. so..I now have a KRG Bravo enroute, due next week, and will see if that T1X can catch up to my CZ457 and/or my Annie 1416AV.. nice that the Bravo will fit both the 22LR and 17HMR Tikkas if the temptation should ever arise.. I run Bushnell Nitro 6-24X 50mm scopes on all these.. have had no issues with mags whatsoever on either rifle..but I shoot off-bench not off-dirt.. you might could consider do-as-i-do.. I carry a T1X single shot adapter... same ONE adapter works just fine in both calibers, so no need for more than just one.. and unless you feel the need for speed, not really much merit in wasted motion loading mags nohow.. certainly doesn't hurt to have one in pocket, just in case you do run into mag issues
@annoyedchef7124

So try sand paperin the inside of the mag or the feeder. Or stiffer spring. Mod the spring? We had issues in the army with worn springs or when shooting lot of blanks with the breaker in the front you had shit inside the mag and they needet to be opened and cleaned.

@@PrincipleCaliber I have never yet (in 50 years) seen any rimfire box and/or rotary mag that did not sometimes have such issues IF/WHEN loaded to max capacity, though Browning typically does better than most.. and I own multiple rimfire rifles (Savage, Anshutz, Tikka, CZ, Steyr, Marlin, Browning, Ruger, TCR22) .. my habit is to load em only half full, eliminates 95% of problems.. if I wanted to shoot for noise, speed, and quantity, I would just shoot semi-auto jammomatics.. if you ever buy/try a TC/R22, buy a couple of Ruger rotary mags and use the TCR22 factory mag for a target, it is worthless for anything else... but 10/22s R 4 kids (including that TC/R22)... me, I prefer to actually hit what I aim at, LOL

17hmr is a great Lazer gun 50-200yds for those that don't want to worry about reading wind or range though. Same folk will transition to a bigger cartridge much past 200 anyway. Just saying it can be done and if you get good at squirrels with rims at the 300yd line you'll be a damn good shooter behind a centerfire at proper long ranges.

I’ve always been curious about the 17 HMR - it’s always seemed like a solution looking for a problem. I get the energy and speed advantages over 22 LR inside 100 yards but, from everything I’ve seen and heard from others, the 17 HMR seems to underperform the 22 LR beyond its supersonic range. Factor in the much higher cost, much lower availability and much less diversity of ammunition and the math on the 17 HMR just doesn’t add up for me. I love the Tikka T1X and the KRG Bravo looks great but I think I’ll pass on the 17 HMR version.
@Wheelchair-bear
@Wheelchair-bear Год назад
I have never heard of a 17 HMR under performing, I have three of them in matching guns with 22 lr. In all 3 case's the 17's out shoot the 22's at every distance out to 100. Where you notice the big difference is when you shoot gophers or groundhogs, the prairie dogs never run down the whole after being shot with a 17 HMR.
@nbonner75
@nbonner75 Год назад
@@Wheelchair-bear it sounds like you’re agreeing with me. Inside 100 yards the 17 HMR is fast, reasonably accurate, flat shooting and has good terminal performance. But what happens to the 17 HMR when it transitions back to subsonic? If all your shooting is inside 100 yards and you can find (and afford) the ammo, you’re good to go! However, past its supersonic range, the 17 HMR seems to fall apart. The 22LR may give up a little to the 17 HMR inside 100 yards (although not much) but seems to more than make up for it out at distance.
@Wheelchair-bear
@Wheelchair-bear Год назад
@@nbonner75 Yeah I can't really argue with you because I don't shoot my rim fires past 200 yards. In my experience the grouping at 200 yards is also much better with the 17 HMR, I'm not a good enough shot to venture out past 200 yards with a rimfires. I believe the 17 HMR 17grn is still super sonic at 200 yards. It will still kill a gopher at 200 yards, whereas if you're lucky enough to hit one with the 22LR at 200 yards you probably wouldn't know if you did hit it or not.
@nbonner75
@nbonner75 Год назад
@@Wheelchair-bear the army’s standard test for lethality on humans is the ability of a projectile to penetrate a 1/2” sheet of plywood. The 22 LR does this consistently out to 500 yards. The trajectory of the 22 LR at those ranges is about that of a mortar round so knowing the exact range and wind conditions is essential to achieving consistent first round hits. But it can be done by a skilled marksman whose taken the time to train and document his firing solutions. Using decent ammo (Eley, Norma, SK, Lapua, etc.) I can easily hold sub-MOA groups with my CZ 457 out past 300 yards (certainly tight enough for all but the smallest of chipmunks). For the average joe just exterminating varmints in the garden or chicken yard the 17 HMR is probably a little more forgiving of a poor range estimation or a bad wind call. And, as you pointed out, the terminal ballistics of the 17 HMR are impressive (for its size) within its supersonic range. As someone who shoots a lot of rounds per month, the 17 HMR’s cost per round doesn’t make sense and availability right now is pretty poor, too. The niche it fills for the cost just doesn’t justify me adding one to my collection. Especially when the 22 LR can cover all the same territory plus remain stable/accurate well beyond the reach of the 17 HRM.
@Wheelchair-bear
@Wheelchair-bear Год назад
@@nbonner75 I definitely can't argue with you and there's obviously several reasons why there are no long range 17HMR competition. Shooting Gophers at 150 yards versus long range rimfire shooting are two very different species. I'm quite interested in the Optics and rail you would use for shooting 22LR at 500 yards. Thanks for the review. Tikka better fix that mag issue. Like the cheap T3 mags, they need to put a little more thought into their products. @PrincipleCaliber
@PrincipleCaliber 3 года назад
17 gets pushed around by the wind a lot more than a 308 at 100 yds. But there is no comparing 17 to 308. We've got a lot of wind out here in the northwest, so 50 yards is a decent range to showcase the rifles performance with a variety of ammunitions.
