I grew up in a very low income family and the level of food waste on tiktok makes me sad more than anything. People waste hundreds of dollars of food so they can make thousands while the other half of this country is barely surviving on pennies

@@I__10 People eat all the food in a Mukbang, which isn't just a YT trend. It started in Korea because culturally they find a lot of comfort in shared meals, but work expectations keep going up and people stay single longer that they just don't have the time to actually share meals. So streamers started Mukbangs, I bet it was even intially done just for fun like how YT used to be before it became a job, because Mukbangs have been around a long time now, the first one was in 2010. (I've been into kpop since 2008, just info I picked up along the way.)

My brother became a teacher on a Native American reservation in Arizona- he came home to visit and made chili and asked if we could guess the secret ingredient- it was excellent beef chili- it was a tiny dash of cinnamon- not enough to know it was there

In the south (Texas) we always would eat chili in public school for lunch. They'd always give it to us with fritos (to make frito pie) and a Lil brownie on the side. Or vanilla cake. I miss that meal 🤤 now I want frito pie.

They're so obnoxious while eating just to get a reaction from people. They're trying to get a wave of comments so the algorithm pushes their videos to more people for a bigger income. Like, i hate loud eaters so much, but these people do it on purpose

I agree but a lot of people watch for that exact reason ASMR. Not me, I had a sister who constantly crunched on ice and a brother who couldn't breathe through his nose. Any kind of chewing/smacking sounds cause me INSTANT RAGE.

Plus it feels like they are mocking the things we literally had to put together just to survive on. Like we had to mix up some pretty iffy things, somehow came up with something edible and then when we finally got to a point where we actually had grocery money (I was a teenager and working by then) and we could cook good food since my moms side is all Italian and we are all amazing cooks but you have to have money to buy stuff to make the good good. Thing is we could still make some pretty awesome tasting things out of very little food. I just feel like these are just ppl who are trying to make fun of the things some people need to live on. Idk maybe it’s just me 🤷‍♀️

Yea, I make something g similar with chicken, ranch seasoning, cream cheese, cheddar cheese, bacon and green onion. It’s called jerk chicken, I put it on pita bread and it’s heaven, and I usually hate cream cheese. Not to be rude but this video came off as rude and judgy

Not saying this in defense of tiktok itself, but there’s a big difference between cornstarch butter sticks and chicken crockpot meals. Sure, they might not be the healthiest but they make so much volume, and could swap cream cheese for no flavored Greek yogurt or the low fat cream cheese.. there’s nothing wrong with the ingredients in those meals. I’ve made several of them myself. Maybe recognize that’s a personal preference of yours rather than some obscenely unhealthy food combination

Yeah I want to know what her family cooks. My family tends to use sour cream for bulk cooking but my husband's family does cream cheese. Although I do agree it can be a gut punch if you have cream heavy meals frequently.

1) Upper Midwest kid here. While I grew up in a cornbread and chili house, i had friends that grew up with cinnamon roll and chili dinners. No one ever mixes these together though...just served together. 2)The crockpot recipes (while not the healthiest) are made to feed a whole family with a veggie side---likely lasts a couple nights of leftovers which is great on a budget. While the amount of cream cheese is a bit much. Personally, I usually halve it and substitute plain greek yogurt for more protein and less fat. Trying to keep multiple kids fed well with limited time and money, the crockpot meals are lifesavers. These recipes have been around for a looooong time.

Yup. My moms a wasp and chili and cornbread muffins are her go to.. along with crockpot meals, sometime with a flaky yorkshire pudding. 👌 . Also alot of people put cinnamon in their chilli so the flavors mized arent too crazy. Im from Toronto but i wasnt the wearded out watching the chilli and cinnamon roll.

In Wyoming we had chili and cinnamon rolls for school lunches! I've heard from folks in the Dakotas it happens there, too. And yes, one doesn't mix them - the cinnamon roll is more of a sweet side to the chili.

Same. Growing up, we always had cinnamon rolls with chili. I lived in Kansas. At church potlucks, school and fall festivals, this is how chili was served. Some people did dunk their cinnamon rolls in their chili, but I always had mine on the side and ate after my chili.

there is quite a bit of hilarious content on tiktok. And some of the youtubers i watch now, I found on youtube. However, I feel like it depends on the type of content you like definitely. And tiktok is flooded with so much nonsensical stuff that it sometimes drowns out the decent stuff. RU-vid shorts are unbearable though.

I was totally on board until the crockpot segment. It's very normal to add cream cheese to create cream sauce based meals. Has me thinking does this girl not cook? Maybe she just doesn't like cream cheese which is fine but it's very normal. That one where the lady added two blocks of cream cheese stated she was doubling the recipe. This cracked me up, too. I was with dude with the more traditional prison slam style burrito the minute I saw his ink. That guy looks like more of an authority than these little girls. 😆 I’m team ramen burrito with beef and cheese…and maybe some hot pickles in there. Maybe that’s because they never had Takis anywhere I was locked up, and I rarely remember seeing Hot Cheetos on commissary. It’s also been a looooong time since I spent more than a few hours in jail, so I’m far from an expert on current jailhouse/DOC cuisine. 🙃

Seriously though. A couple seemed excessive but the rest were fine. Those looked great for super busy families and plenty of leftovers. My family made a lot of crock pot meals and always ate all of it (usually through out the week bc we didn’t have time to cook. My mom was also dealing with lupus so spending hours in kitchen was really hard on her)

Also, you don’t just eat the crack chicken, you have it with a veggie or over rice or a baked potato. All in all, it is a balanced meal, yes it has some fat but you are not eating a block of cream cheese if you have normal portions.

Grew up in Iowa, went to school through the ‘80s and ‘90s and I can confirm that, yes, cinnamon rolls and chili were served together for school lunch. What we didn’t do is dip the cinnamon roll in chili, maybe some did, but it wasn’t something I had ever seen.

I never saw chili or cinnamon rolls on a school lunch tray, but sweet and savory chili is big in certain parts of the Midwest, so cinnamon rolls in chili-while weird-was not completely surprising. My husband was from the Cincinnati area, and they put all kinds of shit in their chili there: cinnamon, brown sugar, and even chocolate. Cincinnati chili is also extremely thin and meat heavy. The first time I ever had Skyline, I was like, “where’s the beans?!?!” 😆 National chains aside, there is definitely a history of chili having a sweet component in areas of Ohio and Kentucky.

The Monster Pie is just a spin on a depression era recipe called a Water Pie. It’s basically just water, sugar, and a thickener to make it bake into a gel. It’s similar to a Key Lime or a Jello Pie.

surprised y’all haven’t heard of buffalo chicken dip before! it’s really popular here in the northeast, especially at sporting events/watch parties. granted, the video wasn’t the best example, but it’s really great when done right! it’s not meant to be a meal, it’s a dip for things like tortilla chips. definitely not super healthy by any means, but it’s really popular and quite tasty when done right!

Honestly, on keto my mom would beg me to make a treat that was basically butter mixed with cinnamon and a sugar substitute like erythritol or allulose, then frozen. They make good "fat bombs" and don't just taste like frozen butter, especially if you don't make them yourself. I think the first time I didn't tell her what it was, and she said it was her fave treat lol.

I’m not seeing what is wrong with the croc pot recipes. Cream cheese is seriously bomb. You can cut back on the CC a bit but a whole crockpot would feed our family for multiple meals. It really isn’t that big of a deal and certainly isn’t disgusting. Also the chili and cinn roll thing is weird but definitely not a disgusting concept either. It started off crazy with the prison burritos and eating blocks of butter (gross man) and then we started saying gross to completely normal chicken taco recipes??

Where I’m from in Mexico cream cheese is life. They use it in all kinds of recipes and street vendors make many of their junk food snacks with it. The brand Philadelphia cream cheese is so popular they will often just say the brand name rather than call it cream cheese.

School lunches were the best. There are lunch ladies who do videos on how lunchroom meals were made. Most schools had the same meals on the same day.

Adding a little vinegar to bubbly water is an actual drink! It's called a shrub and you would use a fruity, sweet vinegar like an aged balsamic or champagne-citrus and add it to carbonated water and lots of ice. You only use a splash of vinegar and it's very refreshing. And no, it doesn't taste anything like Coke! That's a damned lie, LOL.

Okay, I cannot judge some of these food combos, because I’m from Wisconsin and we have some very strange food here. 1. Peanut Butter and Pickle Sandwiches (SWEET PICKLES, NOT DILL.) 2. It’s bread, raw beef, capers, and onions. It’s alright, not as good as the other two imo but still good.

I agreed with everything till you got to the crockpots. They are good for easy meals and don’t see it as wasteful just a video version of Pinterest on the crockpot videos! Also the garlic one in the jar is so freaking good I just left it stay in the refrigerator for a couple days to get more flavor but I LOVE garlic like that. Other than that I see the point you are trying to make.

The entire block of cream cheese is correct for a lot of crock pot recipes. If you think about the amount that’s being made it ends up being about 1 tbsp or less of cream cheese per serving.

I looked it up and it appears that cinnamon rolls and chili together dates back to lunchrooms in the 1960s. It was an Iowa thing although it appears several other states claim to have done it as well. My family and my in-laws are all born and raised in the Midwest. Some do crackers, some add shredded cheese, some do pb sandwiches, and I personally prefer cornbread. For me personally, I don’t like overly sweet things, especially frosting. When I bake, I pick recipes with lower sugar amounts or I reduce the sugar in it. If I do eat something pretty sweet, I need to drink something like coffee or unsweet tea with it for balance. The chili with cinnamon roll thing totally makes sense to me in that regard.

Reading the comments, I realized Midwest is a large portion of America. Just because your part of Midwest doesn't serve chili and cinnamon rolls doesn't mean other parts of Midwest don't. Don't speak for everyone. I live in Iowa, and that's a thing here. Also, I have to add that adding block of cream cheese in some recipes isn't that weird, especially if they are a Tex-Mex type of recipe. It makes the dish creamy and tangy, kinda like some cream. And if you are vegan, which I believe she is, I'm sure all of these food dishes would gross you out regardless if they taste good or not.
