Pyxel Edit is a pixel art program with a focus on the creation and management of tilesets. In this video, I give it a try by creating my own worldmap design, and share some of the design choices and my experience with the software.

This would work perfectly in Godot 4.0 when the new tileset editor is released - it has the ability to select groups of tiles and place them all at once, like you were wanting. I really like that, and despite being an Aseprite nerd, may have to pick this one up as well.
@BJGpixel
@BJGpixel 3 года назад
Ah very cool! And yeah I'd say it's a fun pick-up, just for a different experience at least. I know Aseprite also has a tile function so I'd be curious about the comparison there also
@gamedevmanti4578

Godot also has an awesome auto tile system. It takes a bit of setting up, but you can literally tell the engine which tiles are corners and edges and start painting - the tool will fill in all the right tiles for the shape you've painted!
@His-Games
@His-Games 3 года назад
@@BJGpixel This is certainly much better for world maps I'd think, aseprite has no auto tiling features (eg, you have to copy and paste each tile automatically). However, if I were to use this for game dev, I'd more likely just make tilemaps and then use the unity tile system, or game maker or whatever

Yeah there's some really unique things that can be done with map art! It's a lot of fun to focus on the mentality of making things repeatable and restricted to a certain unit size, rather than having the freedom of an entire undivided canvas like I normally would.

I've been using pyxel edit exclusively for pixel art for the last 6 years as all the updates have been coming through. (only one example on this new channel) I'm glad to see other people try and use it! I actually don't make tilesets all that often, but how lightweight this program is compared to having to load up photoshop is what I wanted it for. I especially like it because I like to keep copies of each stage of what I'm doing, or to make layered bases and parts. So instead of binding a tile to a tilesheet, it can be used as a very quick stamp tool and expand the canvas as needed. Quick iteration and such. The animation is very good for single object stuff, but yeah, it is tied to the per tile system, so being able to export the whole map with animations in parts is not possible. I think it's good for making tileset and testing them out, but I actually used Tiled to actually apply the map. Just needs a lasso tool and I'm golden.
@BJGpixel
@BJGpixel 3 года назад
That's awesome, it's so nice to know there are people out there who main Pyxel Edit! I appreciate the insight about your workflow, I often keep copies when working in Photoshop which ends up as many hidden layers and groups lol. Hope there's possibility for more animation (and lasso) feature sometime in the future!

Blew my mind when you added that first tile to the tile bank, it seems like such an intuitive workflow! Real shame about the way the world tiling is handled tho, and the animations too. Though, I suppose it's not a big deal if this tool were to just be used to generate a tilesheet & another tool like one of the big game engines was used to put together the maps & animations 🤔 🤔 Or, in your case here, Photoshop for the animation 😁
@CKTDanny

It would be cool if they went the same route Aseprite did and put the whole thing up on Github so people can contribute to improving the functionality directly!
@BJGpixel
@BJGpixel 3 года назад
Yeah that's true, could be a useful part of a workflow like that, and it does allow you to quickly export the tilesheet as an image. I'll have to look again, but I'm not sure you can organize the tile layout of the sheet, it seemed like it was just putting them in the order they were created but maybe there's another way to organize/sort it 🤔
@BJGpixel
@BJGpixel 3 года назад
That'd be really cool to see! I do like the idea of a program like this that just specializes in tile workflow, and seeing a lot of extra functionality implemented would make it really powerful 😁
@misninastar
@misninastar 3 года назад
@@BJGpixel You can simply drag and drop the tiles to swap them. There's also the settings in the tile window to where you can say how many tiles wide the sheet as is well if you didn't see that. The downside is that it has to have a tile there before, so it's either an organization afterwards of tight fits, or just have one blank tile you can fill the sheet with and place tiles around there. I'd like to see it work like the pallet tab where you can drag and drop the colors in any open spot.
@BJGpixel
@BJGpixel 3 года назад
@@misninastar Oh thank you, I didn't realize how quick it was to make those swaps! (for some reason, I had been thinking it would actually swap the design in my image as well!)
