Couple of notes: Yes, you *can* copy paste frames in pyxel edit. Look at the tools above the hand and the looking glass. They are very easy to use and can also merge frames if you like. There is a also a shading tool(much better in my opinion) in pyxel edit. All you have to do is click on your selected colour(top left). Except for those points it's a good comparison.

Pyxel Edit does now have the ability to switch between various close shades of color.

Good video. I pretty much agree with all of your points. Another thing I would've commented on is the color picker tool on Pyxel Edit which has an algorithm that automatically chooses Shading, Lightness, Saturation and Hue variants based on a starting color, which has proven to be quite useful at least for me.

I've been using Pyxel Edit for a year now. It is really good. It needs some improvements like being able to copy positioned tiles and being able to view a preview of .pyxel files when browsing a folder, but it's still unparalled for tile creation. Yeah, I've tried Tiled and I did not like it at all. So, I was about to buy Aseprite for animation but I decided to search for "aseprite tile animation" and I found your video. Now I'm baffled that I minimized all animation panels in Pyxel Edit when I first used it and forgot about it, thinking it didn't support animation at all. My god...

Great comparison, however, I've used Tiled and I found it horrible. Personally I use Pyxel Edit for tiles, and I'm considering something else for character animations like Piskel which is free.

Yeah use a sprite sheet format opposed to actually animation.

I have both Aseprite, and Pyxel Edit. I like Aseprite for being user friendly, and I wish Aseprite had the tiling features that Pyxel Edit does. I don't care for having to disrupt my workflow by using more than 1 app for sprite work. Mainly, it is just more to deal with. Another piece of software I have to learn.

You can copy a layer in a frame and copy it to another frame in pixel edit. Without the select tool. There is a tile tool that will do that.

A question and a comment.. In PyxelEdit, you can change the length of each frame, can you do that in Aseprite? Also, I'm surprised the color editor in PyxelEdit wasn't mentioned, it's definitely a highlight for me ^^

Good review, Chris, and what do you think about this software "Marmoset Hexels"?. You've left me undecided, every program has its benefits and cons but it seems that Marmoset Hexels has the good of both

After watching this I still prefer aseprite You can make a selection, like a tile, and turn it into a brush then just build your world from there easy

Has an animator i found pyxel edit quality of export a little better then aseprite cause aseprite for me sometimes bugs the colors even if i use only 3 colors and i felt pyxel edit a little bit more simple to do stuff in overall then aseprite and aseprite still have some annoying bugs since release that they hvnt fixed yet dont know why.
