The Tillotson 225cc high performance go kart or mini bike engine is already a powerful small engine, but in today's Honda clone build episode of CarsandCameras, we're installing billet parts and doing a ton of DIY head work to the Tillotson 225cc engine to take it from 15 horsepower stock to 25 horsepower. In fact, on Go Power Sports dyno, this engine makes over 30 horsepower running on methanol fuel. The parts list is long and very impressive- this engine build represents the cutting edge of widely available small engine performance parts. Thanks for Watching!

I realized we built a big valve head, but we didn't share the valve specs! Stock is 27mm intake, 25mm exhaust, and we upgraded to stainless steel 28.5mm intake, and 25mm exhaust. Doesn't sound like much, but between the better design, larger intake valve, big cam, 1.3 ratio rockers, heavier valve springs, and lighter components, the valve train is WAY better than even a stock 225.

Putting the lapping compound on the flywheel and crank, is known as, "lapping them together." This is done on gears, slides on 1911 model pistols. We did it a lot when building inspection gages in order to obtain very close fitting parts.
@keithschneidly3922
@keithschneidly3922 2 года назад
Hand fitting. The lapping seems to add to longevity as well if fitted areas are kept clean and lubed properly.
@budddove6480
@budddove6480 2 года назад
Using the compound is to ensure a good tapered fit when you decide to remove the timing key completely. The timing key is just that, a timing key. Its not what holds the flywheel in place, its used to line up timing. Myself as well as many others remove these keys completely when advancing timing. The taper on the crank is what holds the flywheel in place. We just use the compound as seen here to make that tapered fit even stronger since we remove the key. FYI, advancing a quarter width of the key is around 7 degrees advanced.

The easiest way to destroy a small engine like this is to turn it into a race engine but cheap out by using the stock cast connecting rod, which will be thrown right through the side of the block at sustained high revs.

I always heard you gap exaust a little more than intake because exhaust valve gets hotter and metal expands more and the intake gets cooled off by fresh air fuel

It is amazing how far the technology has gone since the mid-eighties when we ran modified Briggs flatheads. We started by boring the block .100" and popping the valve seats out for the big Horstman setup. The crank was the stock 5hp Briggs that was balanced between two electromagnets from security doors from an office that was being renovated. Horstman ground their cams from welded up stock blanks so we had to work with a smaller base circle. I would take stock lifters and lengthen them with weld and hand grinding to make it work. The piston and rod were from Horstman, the intake port was actually ground through at the bend and built back up with JB weld and re-ground. The head was "decked" with sandpaper on a broken piece of headstone donated by the local monument co. The carburetor was a Tillotson with a secondary pump powered by the crankcase pulse. At Flemington, I was able to turn 9400rpm. I have to look, I may still have that engine in the shed.
@keithschneidly3922
@keithschneidly3922 2 года назад
A guy named Horstman traded me a 2hp Briggs engine for a DellOrto racing carb. I put it on a 4.5 horse Tecumseh and ran methanol Heet (available at the time over 50 years ago) along with Wynn's nitro additive. I straightened the "S" intake manifold also. That Kat mini bike would stretch your arms out and held up to the fuel too!

You're right about not lapping valves. There needs to be a 1 degree difference between valve head and seat. This difference goes away at temperature because the valve head gets way hotter than the seat, therefore different expansion. You really need a PCV to keep the crankcase under vacuum. This reduces oil leaks and helps keep the crank motion from pushing all the oil to the sides of the case.

I just test fired a Predator Ghost tonight and had the throttle do that, kinda figured it would so I put the front wheel up against a wall before pulling the cord. The 7/8 throttle kits need a thread or two cut off the cable sheath or the pressed on end pulled off and about 1/8 - 3/16 of the sheath cut back or the internal cable is too short for the Mikuni, Chikuni and WalBro carbs. Pain in the ass. Finishing up a 236 Tillotson with a Billet head, need to cut the pushrods to length and check the rocker arm sweep. Might post a Video on my little channel. Love you guys 👍🏼

The Water needs to be real hot to do a good Job , So I recommend that you fill and drain it Several times to get actual Hot water to enter the D/W , The Energy requirements eliminated the Long duration internal water heaters long ago , until the water is Steaming , the machine will only do a sub standard job . Proof to me was my friend in an apartment over the massive water heater , doing a great job with the cheapest model Hotpoint , Mine being a high end Kitchen aid and I needing to run water hot , at the sink and then the fill drain trick .

Sharpie the valve tips will leave a nice whiteness mark for pushrod length. Also most important part of new valve spring is seating the locks. Always smack the valves with a soft mallet to seat the locks. You guys need to build a engine run stand by now… All these engines built over the years… take a spare engine plate weld it to some steel with rubber pad feet and boom. No more chasing them across the concrete on plywood lol

Okay carsandcameras on the valve lapping compound on the flywheel your half way right if your buying a aftermarket flywheel it could be off a little bit and the tappers not match because sometimes they use a different machine in the factorys or somthing i dont know but what i do know that you do that only because not all flywheels arent perfect for each motor and it could cause unstable movement and destroy your internals or break your flywheel off
