@Ronin Dave - Dude, deontological ethics and utilitarianism are not "some obscure ism", they are two of the major ethical positions a person can take. Half the word's legislation is utilitarian - the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people. The worst part was not that he brought up the ethical positions they thought they were debating (Sam's not utilitarian, but consequantialist), but that Pool got it so badly wrong. That philosophy 101, and he used both concepts incorrectly.

1. If you look at just earth, that would literally kill everyone. Doubling the resources would entail everyone drowning from super oceans. 2. They kept Thanos' agenda of wiping out half of the universe, the motivation was different; in the comics, he was courting Lady Death who he believed would favor him if he killed an inconceivable amount of people. The movies actually humanize him and really don't make him seem outright mad. In the movies, people could see his reasoning and say he has a point. Not so in the comics. So basically, doubling resources would easily kill off more people than cutting populations in half and they still needed to make an entertaining movie with a perceivable big bad.

Tim couldn't grasp the simple thought experiment where President A has bullets to kill 10 people, and President B has bullets to kill 5 people, voting for President B is the morally correct stance because you save 5 lives. Although Sam is correct, Tim has a collection of right wing arguments that need to be shut down with data-driven counters. Thanos is utilitarian in a broad, surface-level sense. Ends justify the means sort of thing. But it doesn’t mean he was a good utilitarian and of course it’s a comic book movie with children as the main intended audience so it’s not like it has that much philosophical depth.
