Hi Paul. that is a beauty . as you said for small or large batches of identical parts like screws . perfect for the small shop. setting up tooling will be fun . When I was an apprentice we had banks of capstans in the machine shop. Setters would set the job up and the tooling and then semi skilled operators could run the machines all day . the occasional part inspection would be done every 100 parts or so to ensure tolerance was kept and to adjust for tool wear if needed. CNC killed many trades . Cheers Ade..

Hi Paul, that's a gem. I think we're all wondering about the parts it's made over its life. It looks in really good condition. I can remember visiting Harwins on Fitzherbert Road, they had loads of capstan machines operating. Harwin used to make pins for circuit boards, maybe 2mm diameter and 10mm long tapered and serrated amongst other things, these days connectors as well. Just had a look they are still there, I wonder if they still have all those capstans? Look forward with anticipation to seeing it operate. Plenty of knowledge on here by the looks of it!! Good luck from Spain!!

Hi Paul, very nice machine, I have worked plenty of capstan turret's in my early career. So, two things you should really do are: 1.) make a letter 'A' for the word 'Machine' (goodness knows the story behind the disappearance of the original but what a shame). 2.) position it somewhere where you can have stock poking out of the back of the headstock (clearly you will need a support). These machines are built for repetitive manufacture of piece parts or from bar stock, it would be a shame to restrict the bar stock option. Cheers, Jon
@TheKnacklersWorkshop
@TheKnacklersWorkshop Год назад
Hello Jon, Thanks goodness another capstan expert for me to pester - lol. Thanks for the tips. In the recent hotchpotch I said about removing the clean room wall and putting the capstan in the space, that would work well for the long stock poking out. I don't think I will ever do any major production with it but it would be nice to have is setup and located correctly. Thanks for watching. Take care. Paul,,

Hi Paul: that is cute, now get started building tooling for it. You are probably going to want about 2 feet of space on the headstock end to be able to feed stock, I have found that I feed 2 or 3 foot pieces of stock on the Atlas and Logan turret lathes without extra support with smaller stock. Any longer than that and it needs to be supported or it’s way too whipy

The capstan lathe is a useful addition to the modeller's workshop because it can make light work of the "ten off" type of parts like special fasteners which justify the setup time. Hi Olly, yes it does, designed with that in mind totally. Once these machines are set, the spindle rarely stops. I used to work a range of them from not much bigger than Paul's, right up to huge Herbert 9's. All in the days before H&S was really a thing. Repeat hand loads into a spinning collet of tiny parts (surprised I still have all my digits)! Cheers, Jon
