The ending is a metaphor. Kevin is hope and his survival represents that hope still exists. But it requires time and nurturing to grow up and reach maturity. His parents exploding represents the forces that are supposed to provide that care and nurturing failing him resulting in him being abandoned and left having to now learn and grow up on his own. An' yeah, it was a *really* dark ending. I was maybe 6-7 when I first saw it in the year or so after it came out. That was btw 1981. They didn't actually know the forward half of the Titanic broke apart and split off from the stern while it sank until Robert Ballard discovered the location of the wreck in 1985

In line with the fog machine story you told: saw the opera Faust, but the cat playing Mephistopheles was too sick to perform. Ralph Richardson(Supreme Being) has a really great role as the wizard Ulrich in 'Dragonslayer'(1981) which, if you have never seen it, you should definitely react to... It has what is probably the best dragon ever on the screen. The dragon is named Vermithrax Pejorative and was(I think) the first use of Go-Motion animation in a movie. It made the dragon really look alive. Also, David Warner(Evil) played another GREAT villain in 'Time After Time'(1979) with Malcolm McDowell playing H.G. Wells, which is another you should react to. He also played yet another villain as Dr. Alfred Necessiter in 'The Man with Two Brains'(1983) with Steve Martin. David Warner also played in MANY Star Trek TV shows and Movies(mostly as different characters).

Great choice of movie, Alexa. This was Monty Python animator Terry Gilliam's second feature and the one that established him as a quirky director of note, with a great feel for gothic and medieval settings. I see that you're no slouch when it comes to pageantry, period costuming and mythology yourself. There are many fine cameos, but I too loved the 'running gag' couple played so campily by Michael Palin and Shelley Duvall. I couldn't help feeling Sir Ralph Richardson was well past his 'use by' date though.

George Harrison (the producer) and Terry Gilliam had some.. disagreements.. on making this film this film. George admired the hell out of Terry ad an artist but compared him to John Lennon in his stubbornness. There was talk of changing the ending, among other things. Out of frustration, Terry took the finished film and held a nail to it, threatening "I made this, I can destroy it". Gilliam is a perfectionist to a fault.

Am a huge fan of Terry Gilliam (& Monty Python), also love this film & the other 2 movies that make up this early Gilliam trilogy, Baron Munchaussen & Brazil. There was an era where a particular type of middle class folk covered their sofa's in plastic, to prevent wear & tear. I remember as a kid still visiting people who's parents did this in the 70's. Also by the 80's aerobics & ankle warmers were made into a whole new fashion, mainly due to Jane Fonda (yes Barbarella) releasing a top selling aerobics video.

Another way to look at it: In light of all the adventure that Kevin experienced and his ability to handle himself well beyond his years , he doesn't need coddling per se. If you look a little closer Agamemnon has made his way across time and space to find Kevin in the end. So hes in good hands , ready for his next Adventure. Recall he still has a photo of the map and can navigate with his new father. Kevin is given a mission by the Supreme Being: he must carry out the fight against evil Here and Now. He has the tools and the talent and is literally commissioned by God to go out and fight evil. I think it was gently humorous to depict the Supreme Being as something of a elderly professor maybe in the mold of C.S. Lewis or Tolkien you observed. Seemingly preoccupied but very aware of what's going around him. And a little self-deprecating humor to boot. Classic

Okay, so I stumbled backward into some new trivia for this one. The film aired on TV fairly recently, and this time, I noticed that "Horseflesh" was in the credits. Horseflesh is the lost 7th Time Bandit who drew the map, and who Randall claims is dead. I Google rabbit-holed, and here's what I learned. Horseflesh is NOT dead. Horseflesh turned to the dark side, and joined Evil as a minion. There was originally a whole side-story of Horseflesh's fall, but it got cut. But Horseflesh is still there in the movie; hence the credit. When Evil and the minions are gazing into the magic pool to spy on Kevin and the Bandits, he can be seen. He's a little-person (natch) with a jowly face, a goatee, and goggles on his head. You probably even noticed him subliminally. Then, near the very end, when Evil is killing off all his guys, Horseflesh is there again standing next to the dude with the horn. Then Evil blows them away. At that point, Horseflesh finally actually is dead. So! The question that arises is...why did Randal say he's dead? 1. Did Horseflesh fake his death? 2. Did Randall know he was alive, but he was dead to him after the betrayal? Like Anakin and Ben? 3. Did Terry Gilliam consider the character dead, even though he couldn't cut around those two scenes? 3 is probably most likely, but personally, I'm going with 2. 2 feels more Shakespearean.
@mikemeggison5084
@mikemeggison5084 Год назад
The movie re-aired today, so I kept my eye out, and the info site I got this off was wrong. Horseflesh is in MORE than just those two scenes. He's in virtually every scene with Evil and the henches.

I have seen all of them unfortunately and I mean all, even the painfully reconstructed ones with only still photos and occasional narration :)

In case you don't know about her, one of my favorite reactors went through most of Classic Who! Here is a link to her playlists to find them: ru-vid.complaylists

I've seen Babylon 5; I think I am just not the right target audience. I'm more of a Stargate fan.

Umm...you do understad, my love, that no myth is "the OG" canon myth, right? All stories are ones long told, by differing groups..ans thus no story is "the true story"...Myths, and trackuing them, is a big part of anthropology, uesd to determie the mindset of the people wh propegate(d) it, There are no "true myths" comparedt to others. each is best taken as a snapshot of those that record it. In other words, saying "Agamemnon never fought the Minotaur outside the Labyrinth" is specius at best. There's every likelyhood such a tale occured, and was equal in validity to the tales of Theseus. Theseus just got the preas, later,and became remembered.
