Destroying a '63 Corvette split window coupe to turn it into a drag car was common practice in the '60s and '70s. These cars were cool, but they were not the six-figure collector cars they are today. And as it turns out, Corvettes are MADE for high performance driving, so the progression into racecar status is just nature taking its course. This example looks like a '67 Corvette, and that's because the front end has been swapped for a '67 with the vertical louvers, and the split in the rear window has been cut out, being replaced with a standard '64-67 Corvette rear glass.
The car was transformed into a drag car in 1969, and raced throughout the '70s until it was parked in 1976 and left in long term storage. The car had John Lingenfelter engines throughout its racing career, starting with a 292ci small block, then going to a 255ci small block and finally a 302ci Small Block Chevy, which still resides in the car to this day. John Lingenfelter actually raced this car at the 1971 US Nationals in Indy, but it was a short-lived campaign. The car was ran in the Modified Production ranks, and originally had a Muncie 4 speed and Olds rear end. Later, it was upgraded with the narrowed Dana 60 rear end, 4 link suspension with coil springs, aluminum interior work, and updated paint job.
This car is a true survivor from the '70s and even though it makes the Corvette purists weep because someone cut up a prized split window coupe, that's part of what makes it cool. The car is fully functional and has made some wheels-up passes at the drag strip since its new ownership in recent years. Tom Clary is the proud owner of this historic drag car, and plans to preserve its history for many years to come.

HRH.., You probably weren't around when /MP was so popular... There were buttloads of these mid-year Corvettes in the /MP and /GAS classes. They were a hoot to watch as they had tiny motors with 4 and 5 speeds . The front wheels spent as much time in the air as they did on the track. It's cool that you have found one still in battle dress and not restored.There shall never be the likes of these again.I'm glad to have been there,You would have loved it. Thanks for bringing us this one!

Thanks for your videos. A lot of great historic info. In 1963, we went to Yellow River drag strip and watched a huge Super Stock meet. While there, we met Houston Platt who was driving "The Dixie Twister" who was at that time, if I remember correctly, owned then by a guy we knew, Eugene Anderson. Gene owned A&A Fiberglass, and at one point also campaigned a '61 Chevy station wagon he bought new with a 348, 3 twos, 4 speed. It was at first his family daily driver then put on the strip. I think he called it "The School Bus". Of course this was a few years before the tragic Yellow River/ Houston Platt accident. Drag racing just isn't the same now!

On my paper route when I was a kid in the 60's a guy had a split window and he said that it blocked a lot of his rear view mirror and he didn't like it for that.

Once again, you made me sigh. With the car and the names. In the seventies, I wondered why old guys were talking about the fifties and sixties. LOL. Oddly enough, I had a thirty year project (I kept the car forty years, the last ten without even looking at it) with a '67 Corvette which began in 1970. This one is similar enough to make me feel bad that mine is gone. Thank you again!

Beautiful! Simply beautiful! Most old race cars were rebodied at some point in their life. If the chassis worked you simply updated the body with the new year skin, they were just another used car or race car back then. Quite a few were damaged/ stolen or retired from street use or evolved from simply wanting to go faster and didn't survive but usually gave their parts up to the next one. Awesome to see that it was preserved in this form.

They had an excuse back then. Like you said they had very little value, they were just considered old cars. Nowadays you wouldn't catch someone cutting up a 63 split window. Ive seen even some go for 7 digits on the auction block. And if you're the owner/consigner, yeah.....nice payday to buy MORE classics. 😎

It always makes me wonder about the direct drive cooling fan if it was ran like that or if it had a fan clutch. You think that would eat a lot of power
@williamking6306
@williamking6306 2 месяца назад
Well it did have an aluminum flex fan which flattens out at high RPM and draws very little power. But the curve comes back into the blades at low speed like on the return road the engine loafing along , ideal conditions for cooling the engine.

Short stroke=low end torque papaw said
@bobbrinkerhoff3592
@bobbrinkerhoff3592 2 месяца назад
Your papaw was wrong , short stroke allows for more rpm . That's why the first generation Z-28s ran a four inch bore with a three inch stroke . Long stroke crankshafts make for low end torque, look at a 454 Chevy with it's four inch stroke .
@DaveMcLain
@DaveMcLain 2 месяца назад
@@bobbrinkerhoff3592 This is false. Torque comes from displacement not engine geometry. Keep the rod ratios the same and you'll find out that a large bore short stroke or a small bore long stroke produce exactly the same torque if the pressure in the cylinder is the same.
@bobbrinkerhoff3592
@bobbrinkerhoff3592 2 месяца назад
@@DaveMcLain are you aware that all of the first generation SBC engines, whether it's a 265 all the way up to the 400 use the same length con rods at 5.7 inches ? The simply moved the wrist pin in the pistons to accommodate the difference in the stroke of the crankshafts . Running longer than stock rods is done to reduce the amount of pressure exerted on the sides of the cylinder walls by the piston , not to increase torque .
@DaveMcLain
@DaveMcLain 2 месяца назад
@@bobbrinkerhoff3592 Are you aware that all small block Chevy engines from the 262 to the 400 did not use 5.700 length rods? 400's kept the compression height the same and used a 5.565 rod length to allow the 3.75 stroke to work.
@bobbrinkerhoff3592
@bobbrinkerhoff3592 2 месяца назад
@@DaveMcLain I just Googled the rod lengths for SBC engines and even Google can't make up their minds on the 400 . My 400 experience was with a 377 inch destroked engine using the 3.48 crank and 5.7 rods . My mistake, however this was forty years ago . So , I will amend my statement to all SBC from the 262 to the350 use the 5.7 inch con rod . I had forgotten about the mini mouse 262 from '75-'76 .

The history as was told in the video is very accurate. The car started life as a 1963 Corvette Coupe. The day it arrived at Performance Machine Service ( owned in 1969 by Jerry Suetterlin and John Lingenfelter ) there was no front end on the car, so when Townsend bought the panels from GM to build a new front end, he bought 1967 panels as the look of the 1967 was preferred. They also took out the rear window and filled in the two fake vents on the b-pillar area. If you look closely, the signs of the 1963 are still there.. the gas cap lid, no back.up light in the center cap, 1963 door panels, 1963 dash cluster. The vin tag under the glove box door was an original 1963 Vin Tag, spot welded in place. I actually had the rear split window glass from this car until a few years ago. The car was built for NHRA Modified production so it did not matter what year the car was... but it was alway titled as a 1963 Corvette.. John Lingenfelter owned and raced the car in 1971. He took it to the US Nationals that year where we had trouble with the Muncie Transmission.. He first ran the 255 cubic inch engine combination in 1971 in a different 1963 Corvette with the Corvette stock rear end. The tracks he ran most were Van Wert ,Ohio and Muncie, Indiana. He usually won if he did not break the rear drive train... and he also got tore down a lot, but it always check out legal (few believed it was a 255 cubic inch small block.) The high winding 255 engine sounded great through those Stahl headers.. This car is the real deal !

Any '63 coupe would be a "split-window." Why do people have to reiterate it over and over again? It's like "5-window Model A coupe.". They never made 3-window Model A coupes. And lose the "Corvette purists" diatribe.

It is a 63 made to look like a 67. Chrome on a pillar and front of doors is 63. 63 dash cluster,63 door panels,63 glove box door. 63 gas door.

@bobbrinkerhoff3592 2 месяца назад
The way it sounded , the car wasn't turned into an all out race car until 1969 . Before then it was likely a street car that had the split removed due to the blind spot it creates . This happened fairly often after the big back window came out in '64 .
@yourhandlesarestupidyoutube

I'm an old man so you might want to listen. The split window is cherished today but disliked by many back then. This was done to alot of 63's in the day. Even Zora disliked the split window.
