I just bought a country home and I inherited a 1992 Terry Resort which overall is in great condition bu he washroom ceiling is caved in a bit and also the front master bedroom, so I have to choice but to rip the roof open and see what repairs are required. This time lapse is great as I also plunge into this adventure!
I like this video! I want to add solar to my 2014 coachmen clipper ice 18', and I am trying to understand the roof framing so I can adequately secure the solar on the roof. This clip saved others as well as I a lot of time. Thank you for taking the time to create this video!
What materials did you use? I see it had particle board to begin with. Then you replaced with plywood? And then another layer? And some glue? And the final sheet?
curious.. what is the yellow aerosol you are using for the edged of the trailer right before you put the gorilla tape. does anyone know what it is and why they are using it?
Good question, from the factory the rubber is glued to the OSB and when you remove the old rubber it inevitably pulls up chucks of the wood, leaving a jagged surface that can tear the new membrane. Putting the luan over the top leaves a smooth surface to adhere the new membrane to, as well as adds strength and insulation to the roof. Thanks for watching
@@NoizyFilmsCollier Thanks. Makes perfect sense now. I had someone give me a quote to replace my roof and they said they were going to cover the entire roof with luan. After watching some videos and doing some research I think I will replace the roof myself. Thanks for the video and info.
When you pull the old membrane off it tears the wood off the old decking. That will show when you install the new membrane...it will be a rough surface. So it could potentially damage the new membrane. The luan makes for a nice smooth surface and cosmetically pleasing. I hope this helps, thanks for the feedback.
Why don't you use spray in bedliner on your roof. That's really some tough stuff you can't get it off once you get it on and I don't think it would ever leak. And you can get it in colors other than black.
I'd love to see it done and know how well it works, the only problem I can imagine is cracking from being to rigid as the RV expands and contracts with temperature change.
It doesn't work. Cracks easily in the sun, even under a thick tarp. I have a Coleman pop-up where the previous owner tried that. It's now unusable until I completely replace the entire molded roof.
How hard was it to get all the creases out of the top? Did you put butyl tape on the trim before you screwed it over the sides and front and back of roof material? Thanks for sharing such a great video!
You smooth the creases out as you roll the rubber on, there may be some that wont come out, but once its sat in the sun for a while they will usually shrink away. And yes butyl tape is used under all trim and roof fixtures. Thanks for watching
nice vid. im replacin the tpo on mine now and after removing the old material I noticed there is alot of sticky glue residue on the osb and now a bunch of dust and particulates from removing the old material stuck to that now. what did you use to remove tat stuff before laying down the new glue and roof material?
It depends on the roof material that the manufacturer used, we try to go back with the same stuff, its usually R-13 for the insulation and we typically use 1/8th in Lauan on top of the plywood. A PVC membrane is what we recommend for the rubber replacement. Thank you for watching and commenting. Stay tuned!
Best insulation is not fiberglass batting which can collect moisture and get moldy. Use Black Sheep Wool batting instead. Eco friendly, no mold, superior warmth. Also add Polyiso or XPS insulation which are foil covered closed cell foam boards with very high insulating properties you can buy at Home Depot.
@@spamtreg7693 That's interesting, did not know that. Why are some of the best van makers using it on their floors? Its for preventing cold under the van, not heat from sun.
Was the trim able to screw into osb or did it screw into the truss running the length of Rv? Also did you place thin layer of wood down for a smoother bonding for the adhesive and rubber roof?
NoizyFilms Collier one last question because I plan to replace my roof and I’m new to it so I was just wondering what materials did you order in completing this project? Thank you
@@timcrew3557 it depends alot on what you have to start with, how much of the roof your replacing. You can find roof replacement kits that will have the proper sealants and tapes. It's a hard question to answer without more details
NoizyFilms Collier my plan is to really replace the whole roof because I have a big hole on one end and I know for a fact that the wood under it is bad
Search for RV roof replacement kit on Amazon and pick out one for you're length for you're RV that will get you a great start. Then you just need decking, and screws and so on
Why dont they use AdvanTech plywood its tongue and groove and uill last for 50 years and it seems the glue is not hilding and the putty they stick on the trim I have used it before and it dose not stick so great I use Black EPDM Coverstrip Seam Cover Tape, 5 in. wide and cut it down to the size needed once you put that on your gunna play hell getting it off so befor you roll out your rool put it around all the openings and under the frunf cap to hold the frunt of the rool then use your tubes of self leveling roof and put the cap back on or use a rool one peace as long as the bus of aluminum roofing and dont be stingy with the glue then build mold's of thr roof after you lay the roof put the mold down on it and put pressure down on it all 4 corners do the hole roof let it relly bake and cure in for 24 hours then put all your trim back on.But if you can pull it off that so eazy what is wind going to do at 70 mph with a head wing of 40 mph going to do . you say that it only good for 10 years American companies use to build a hell of a lot better than that and they had good qulity and took pride in their work they built things to last 50 years . a lot of companies do noy even put under coating pickups trucks cost 70 to 100 thousand now prices are to high they have never helped Americand they raise then the cost of living gos up higher then the increas in wages becaus of the fed they could have left it at 5 bucks a hour as minimum wageand lowered the cost of living across the country so a person starting off could pay rent on a one room apartment gas and food on that wage and make people work and learn to get rasies but you pople are nut's or stupid you could put a flat tax on every item now they base things off someones credit ratting if they have bad credit they pay more you talk to about discrimination sorry about going on but I am sick of our government the communist democrats and the just going for the ride republicans letting our country go to the crapper
At 2:01, the man in green shirt is applying a silver/shiny tape. What is it and for what reason ...covering screws ? It looks different from the black Gorilla tape at the seams. JwgK Houston
The aluminum tape was only used over flush mounted screw heads for extra protection, where as the gorilla tape was used on the wood seams with tend to protrude more
@@NoizyFilmsCollier Thanks....I currently have my toy hauler in the shop due to roof hail damage which led to water ingress and plywood separation. Now I am having a difficult time sourcing 4 x 10 plywood. I like the idea of OSB underlayment and glued lauan as a smooth layer before gluing the EPDM. I was originally thinking of using 3/8" ply but may have to do the 2 wood layer application. Would it make much difference if you used the Gorilla tape over all the screw strips ? I have access to both types of tape. JwgK
It makes me super nervous walking on the roof on mine as it sags and cracks under my 185 weight. I see your's sagging, how were you ok with working on the roof?
Anytime you get on the roof, its dangerous. Be very careful. Ive seen people fall thru and off. One of our customers lost his life falling off of his 5th wheel. Pls use an abundance of caution
NoizyFilms Collier dude thank you so much for the reply. I’ve been told that it’s a good idea also to use maybe a 3x3 plywood to even distribute the weight. It definitely freaks me out being up there but my camper really needs work
First of all no, You cannot apply the liquid rubber directly to the wooden surface. Second, I would advise against the liquid rubber in the first place. Unless you're roof is just beyond repair and or not worth fixing correctly. The problem is once you use the liquid it makes future repairs more difficult and leaks much harder to find, and typically any repair means re-coating the whole roof
Looks like you will be doing this again in year. You need to put weather protection between inner and outer shell! Our class C was thrown together by Thor motorcouch company, had it for five and a half years and the roof rotted. Don't buy anything from Thor motorcouch company, fly by night throw together, no integrity! So good luck with your project.
Alot of questions are addressed in the comments, including this one. Pls feel free to look them over. You may also find answers to questions you didn't think of. The answer to you're question is gorilla tape. Thanks for watching
The supplies are well over $1000 the membrane kit alone is almost $500 then you figure wood, screws, sealant, tape, insulation. Miscellaneous wiring supplies, etc. Not to mention tools if you are not already equipped and without experience mistakes are almost a certainty, which will cause added expenses. Even a do-it-yourselfer will have some significant cost to complete this project correctly.
Trailers are made with cheapest weakest wood. Why use OSB plywood?? You see what happens when moisture hits it ? Swells and molds. This was a waste of time and money. Real plywood 5/8 is heavy duty. Cost alot money that's why cheap people do it this way with OSB glue chips wood. . this new roof wood will be fine till roof leaks and the same will happen as before. When you renovate or rebuild , it is WISE to over build and make better than before. Other wise your just wase time really.
@@mikegracia1475 if installed PROPERLY EPDM is great systym. Unfortunately people make mistakes with caulking and sealing around utilities on roof. It's the small stuff but it ends up being cause of water getting into RV. Seams and cut outs along the roof need to be sealed with proper compounds applied. I see many EPDM roofs that leak because someone got up there with caulking or roofing cement and make a mess really make it worse . EPDM is one of best systym for rv IF done properly and even at factory they install it all wrong
@@eddiespagetti8395 what would you use under the epdm rather than OSB? Marina ply perhaps? Will be doing a similar job myself soon, but will get a friend to help me (he's a builder by trade and has done epdm roofs a fair bit I think).
@@mikegracia1475 Thick plywood the thicker the better and that marine plywood is great to use. Costs triple the amount over particle OSB crap board is a joke. Rvs are so weak made so weak unless you customize it yourself with better wood which adds weight but still better than build with osb. People need to check RV scrap yards. See just how weak and poorly built rvs are
