In this video I share one of the greatest pieces of advice I ever received.
Advice that may be financially valuable to your career, whether you work in the creative industries or not. It also has a lot of value in terms of your personal self development I feel.
While doing so I undertake the high level photo restoration needed to get a picture ready to be sold on my Redbubble.

I must admit I am my own worst enemy in this field. I often give up my time and efforts for my local 'fully amateur' sports clubs. They even advertise for 'volunteer' photographers.

Thanks JB. This video could not have come in a better time for me to reflect on my current struggles with how much to charge for my clients.

It's never an easy topic! I'm glad that this video could hopefully help you with that decision. Thanks for watching! :)

I’ll add some things to think about- The first is that you should apply that theory when making discretionary purchases. Before you buy something, ask yourself if you would go work the amount of time to make the money for the purchase. In order words, if you normally make $20 an hour, and it costs $40, ask yourself if you would go work 2 hours right then to buy it. This will help you decide when things are important or not. The other thing is to be careful locking yourself into that amount you make. For instance, if your “rate” is $50 an hour, don’t start a business or goal to make that much per hour. Don’t hold yourself back from obtaining a greater potential.

Very good points! I try and think that way with purchases when investing in something that will hopefully last me a while. Like when I was building my computer, some of the parts were a bit more expensive but they came with 5 year warranties. I knew if they were offering 5 years they, as a company, must have been 99% sure that the product would last AT LEAST 5 years. So I sometimes spent the extra for that, likely to be, much higher quality part knowing it might save me money in the longer term.

Do you know I never thought of my time in that way, also it could not have come at a better time.

How long does it take you to restore a slightly damaged photo and how much is your rate? I ask because I am thinking of doing this as a side job but not a rush work environment. Thanks in Advance. Love your work and your advice.

While I agree with much of this, I also believe humanity goes way beyond economy. Especially when it comes to human connection and passions. It IS important to value your time and your self, especially in jobs you don't exactly love. But I would not like to let it burden life outside of forced things. It would be like putting human relationships through an algorithm and seeing what the computer decides. Video games are fun, but if I were to think about how much money I'd potentially lost playing them I'd probably go mad.

Fair Points! I think the ideal goal is to reach a point with your work/social life where you never think about your time in the way I described. But I think we've probably all known someone who doesn't really consider our time unfortunately :S. And with games, I've been trying to vary up what i play a bit so i don't just sink hours into the same few games. I actually tried 'Her Story' the other day as I had heard such fantastic things about it. I didn't personally enjoy it that much but it was certainly unique and an interesting experience and I felt the few hours I spent playing it were rewarding for that reason.
