Two of the first things I bought in preparation for this project, were a digital level and a laser level... they have been used quite a bit, but haven't really made it into the videos.
You have already cut out many parts that could have served you as an indication. You shouldn't have cut the inner sill in front of the B pillar either. Now it becomes difficult to determine the mass exactly everywhere. Also measure everything diagonally and make sure that the rear does not sag. In this phase, the roof connection must not be flush in height. Good luck with your project
Thanks for the feedback. I’m certainly no expert on the process, so I’m more than happy to take advice… 👍 The build frame, and how it’s mounted should negate any chance of the rear sagging - everything should be perfectly level and on the same plane. Yes indeed, the roof is not meant to align at the moment. The C-pillar will be modified when the saloon roof is grafted on - I’m nowhere near that stage yet. It’ll also be welding in strengthening beams before the roof is detached to ensure it stays square. I’ve studied conversions from very reputable builders who cut the sill in front of the B-pillar in just this way. But yes I’ve seen many different approaches too, but I chose this route for mine. I can’t capture everything I do on camera, but needless to say, I have taken lots of measurements to help me ensure the dimensions and structure remain correct. Not that im perfect either but .you look like you know what your doing .but im just saying any advice or help your given please make sure its the right advice and is correct 👍 .for a project like this .you need people who know what they are doing and have done several correct ones themselves and not people who think they know what they are doing .i wish you all the luck in the world ,and very best wishes and best of luck 👍
There has been plenty of 'advice' coming my way since creating this channel, believe me. But, you are absolutely correct, unless someone has first hand experience of doing this themselves, then I will take their advise with a pinch of salt. In fact, the builds I am referencing are from builders who have undertaken a number of builds, and not from people who have just made them selves a one -off (like me!). Knowledge comes from experience, and experience only comes with repetition. I know reputable replica builders also use the 'roof transplant' method... so it it's good for them, it's good for me!

Thanks! Yes, I'm in Australia... so pretty much all the parts have to be sourced overseas. The car is intended to be a road going S1 homologation replica... although not fully faithful replica. It'll be RHD for a start, and have some modern tech (ECU, PMU, dash etc). It'll have all the important aspects correct though... dimensions & windscreen angle, and a of course, the 20v turbo inline 5 engine.

It’ll be a road car which will be used… I intend it to be my daily driver - it certainly won’t be a garage queen just to be looked at and polished occasionally. It’s not meant to be an exact faithful replica either - it’ll be RHD for a start. From the exterior it’ll look correct, but under the bonnet and inside it will be ‘updated’. It’ll have a 20v ABY motor, modern tech (ECU, PMU and dash etc). I supposed I’d call it a modern recreation rather than a replica. Well, that’s the plan anyway… 👍
Nice! Are you also going to make the front windscreen more steep? I believe Audi took that from the 80 model... this to give the driver a better view...
Great job on the build planning, very methodical and thoughtful. I'm in the USA where vehicles are more readily available, would it help the shell build process to have a 80 body shell, 4000 here in USA with quattro. Would having the Quattro floor under the GT top shell help the process or not. Thanks, and great job.
This is certainly an option, and a way I've seen other replicas built. As long as you start with a quattro floorplan, this is the important bit - means you don't have to go through the process of converting to a quattro. Also, going with a 4000 2-door base means both the A & B-pillars are correct and won't need any modification. But 2-door 4000's must be very rare?
I generally do yes... do you feel the voice-over was drowned out too much by the video audio (grinding/drilling) on this one?... is that what you mean? I'd concentrated on the background music vs the voice-over, and forgot to bring down the actual raw video audio level. Just a handful of videos in and still a lot to learn. The feedback on such things certainly needed... thanks!! BTW... I have to do a voice-over rather than 'live' video commentary as there's always a large fan howling away in the background... working in the heat and humidity of Queensland would be properly unbearable without it. Roll on winter!
@@sportquattro86 I like the project and the voiceover is also well done, but the background music is much too loud and repeets itself about every 15 seconds, I think even the howling fan would be better. Were just entering spring here and I´m glad things are warming up, 16 degrees celsius today:-)
OK noted… yes, with the current source I’m using for the music, finding a decent track of some length to fill out the video has been difficult… hence the looping.
Great project, ill be following it with interest. just a heads up on the music. its a bit repetitive to say the least ... and thats coming from somebody onto this kind of music! do search for royalty free music, there's plenty out there. what time frame do you have for this build?
Yes, I am struggling to find music I like, and that I think is suitable, of a decent length... so I think I need to expand my searching past the current provider I use. Thanks for the feedback... keep watching!
I cringed when you put the grinder down on the lead, joke you didn't knick the wire, done that many a time, frightens you to death when it goes with a bang or you knick it and lean on it later and get a nice electric shock, the joys of cutting up a Scar 😂😂😂
Guess what???.. yep, grinder severed the power chord this week... eeek! Not to worry, no deaths or serious injuries... I'm still here, alive and kicking... and grinding :)
That's not strictly true... there's more than one way to build a replica with all the correct dimension. Check out the other videos dude... all the information is in there...
@@sportquattro86 That's wrong ... the original Sportquattro front was an Audi 80/90 limousine, the a-pillar was not so flat like on the normal Quattro. Your solution will look wrong when it's finished and not like an original Sportquattro.
