After a great summer of cruising it's time to give Delfino some TLC. We took the boat to Plymouth for a week out of the water to tackle all the usual maintenance, repair our coppercoat, fix some gel coat cracks under our windscreen and install a new through hull.

Glad you're enjoying it and that your copper coat application is done! I do not look forward to the day that the whole hull needs redoing!

You might find areas that are underwater and metal, cannot be copper-coated, due to electrolysis. Two dissimilar metals in salt water generates electricity so galvanic action occurs... Lead keel, and stainless steel prop shaft, and bronze propeller... No no no no...

That's right - we triluxed some of those areas or left them bare. - Stu

Did you you take advice on the location of bilge pump through hole?
@DelfinoDiscovers
@DelfinoDiscovers 2 месяца назад
Err.. no? Any issue you can see with it? We followed the run of the primary bilge pump hose, including loop well above the water line. That primary is still installed and operational. I tried to get the through-hull for the new bilge pump as close to the primary as possible but the final location was more or less determined by the space in the laz and the other fittings. - Stu

@@DelfinoDiscoversHi, watched your video last night. I’ve been thinking about your through hull fitting. It’ll be under water occasionally when hard on the wind on starboard. Have you covered off the siphon risk? Swan neck above the waterline maybe? Just a thought. We sail a Malo 43. Rob

Hi Rob! Nice boat :) We have covered off the siphon risk yes, at least we believe! The hose takes a loop well above the waterline into the cockpit coaming, similar to the pre-existing bilge pump hose.

@DelfinoDiscovers excellent, sounds good. We're in Scotland shame we didn't see you last year. We've cruised Brittany south to La Rochelle, wonderful cruising ground. Be sure to go up the Villaine to La Roche Bernard, fabulous place.

Galvanic corrosion as above. Not at all sure why you masked up the areas, presumably to impress the fish with the straight lines since any extra copper coat was going to be helpful anti foul. But then, despite all the epoxies and anti fouls being volatile poisons, didn’t mask yourselves.

Yes we should've been wearing a respirator. Interestingly copper coat does not mention the need for a respirator in its PPE guidance, but still. We took the risk that day with what we had to hand and the breeze. We did wear an N95 to protect against copper particulates. Boat was masked simply to make a clear line between where we were applying, prepping surface, and where we were not. - Stu
