When you are not 100% happy with where you are, then things need to change!
This is a history of how I got here, to date.
My name is Terry Kent and I am a General Aviation PPL private pilot operating out of Andrewsfield EGSL about 25 miles to the north east of London in the UK. Short Field is my channel focused on the lighter side of General Aviation including flight and airfield reviews, equipment unboxing and review plus all things private pilot related. I use various cameras to record my videos including GoPro and Insta 360 and stills and edit them in Adobe Premiere Pro, I am an animator as well and often use animations to describe situations more clearly I use Blender and Adobe After Effects for these. I always attempt to post my videos in the highest possible quality, normally 4k.
I fly a 2011 Pipersport two seat single engine aircraft that is also known as the PS28 or SportCruiser in the USA (America) it is known under the FAA as an LSA or Light Sport Aircraft and can be flown on a very basic license. In the UK it is a Part 21 airplane which requires a full licence but it's generally cheap to run, affordable maintenance and great value for money. It cruises at 100 to 105 knots and has superb short take off and landing or STOL capabilities. I visit farm strips, back country and short airfields, some of them dangerous and I try not to crash :-), as well as international airports and try to learn something new every time I fly.
#ppl #generalaviation #pilotlife
I fly VFR and IFR as well as visual and instrument approaches.
My videos may give helpful information to pilots but please remember these are just for entertainment, I am not an instructor nor should anything shown in my videos be used for real world aviation, also the airfields I visit may have totally changed or even closed since the making of the video so always consult the latest information for your country.
If you enjoyed this video, please give it a ‘thumbs up’ and leave me a comment in the box below, I love to read them and I also like to hear what you like or dislike about my video. Please share it with anyone you think would be interested and I'd so love it if you ticked SUBSCRIBE and DING THE NOTIFICATION BELL to be informed by RU-vid when I upload my next video. Thank you so much.
If you are interested, my video content is available to purchase as stock footage, please contact me via my email address in the ABOUT section of my channel for more information.
If you like my content you could buy me a coffee but no worries if you don't want too, I'm just chuffed that you are even interested in my videos, and if you ever see me at any airfields please come over and say 'Hi' and I'll probably buy you a coffee.

You had me worried there Terry😄😄💜 You've had some nice aircraft - I particularly like RW Commanders (although theyve had their critics). Common sense states that the thinking man GA pilot (or 60% of them) looks to LSA or Microlight type aircraft these days. One bittersweet moment, like my dad, you had to give up and start again (dad was okay after a couple of check rides but still had to sit all the exams and do his short and long XCs again). If I can regain my health I guess I'd be in a similar situation, like snakes and ladders. I hope that the new airstrip works out. Dad was at one airfield near the Thames that flooded in the winters. In one hanger, one very bad year, the Cessna's tyres were under water. So we went to an ex RAF base turned into a grass strip, but the farmer hardly ever cut the grass (and wouldn't let us do it). Then we moved to an established farm strip with good drainage. All double edged swords though. Hope it works out for you👍✌️😊

I thought you were giving up Short field. I first bought my Robinson R22 in 1992 with 4 hours left on the clock before the dreaded overhall. The owner simply had other personal issues and couldnt afford to keep her airworthy. So I stepped in. I have always being in sole ownership, tho the tempation has been there a few times to share or sell time to a flying school. I doubt she would be in as good a condition Fast forward to 2023. Ive not being flying as much lately due to business needs. We currently have 4yrs/1000hrs left before the next 12yr/2200 hour inspection/overhall. But being a single, non smoking or drinking, 54 year old, own house, no mortgage, no wife or kids guy. Flying is my only money pit. The local flying club will not allow me to enter their spot landing competitions. Something about unfair advantage. :-)

Nice roundup of your experience - have you ever dared to add up how much you've spent, especially with the bigger more complex aircraft :-) Faster fancier aircraft are quite fun (I used to fly an S-35 Bonanza when I lived in the US, as well as a Cessna 140) but these days living in Britain I've found I'm having just as much fun in my vintage Auster J1 and it doesn't hammer the wallet like the Bonanza did! (Although I will admit to a hankering after the classic piston twin, the Piper Apache, I dream of having one with the original vintage paintjob, but an old twin will empty the wallet in no time flat).

Haha :) SAFFEND! Ah binnair! In fact, my first ever flight was there - I was about five - in probably a Prentice, or similar. Later, back in Romford, there followed a massive argument with my mother, who insisted that "knots" was a measurement used only on ships, which seemed strange, since I'd read it directly off the airspeed indicator... Great video!

I see you’ve changed the title- good move - I guess most of your followers don’t need baiting - always great content. This was particularly interesting with a very brief history of your flying career. I’m always interested in how non-commercial pilots got to be doing this. Will put Andrewsfield on the list as it’s only a stones throw away 😊

Interesting back story Terry, wow you have had some competent (and expensive to run) planes in the past. I’ve never been to Andrewsfield, but it looks nice. We have dawn to dusk at our strip and its lovely being able to fly on those late summer evenings, sometimes up to 10pm watching the sun go down. Grass runways can be fine, it all depends on the drainage and water table. The end of our runway used to be under water in some of the winter, with ducks swimming on it, but the Environment Agency changed the way they manage the local river levels and the past two years we’ve flown all year. Weird stuff!

I, too, thought from the title you were hanging up your headset. Glad to see you've tried the mini airliner stuff and have settled for day VFR bimbling. I learned to fly in the '70s and have hung up my headset now largely due to the reasons you left Southend - we were Liverpool based and the hassle started to equal the fun - and up here there's no equivalent of Andrewsfield. Barton used to be like that, was our playground for many decades, but not now. But I loved day VFR bimbling in the lovely Chipmunk, farm stripping and aeros. Tried a Yak52 for a few years which was great fun but very expensive on fuel, so went back to the Chippy. If there was a nice J3 or L4 Cub on a farmstrip available around here (I'm getting a bit old for aeros now), I might be tempted back, but really, after 35 years of having an absolute ball, I'm happy as I am.

pretty typical story all in all, for recreational aircraft owners. I find general aviation inEurope to be too restrictive, so I told the wife expating to Spain from the US was not really gonna happen as long as I can hold a medical. I do share many of the frustrations of aircraft ownership, which is why I'm moving on to experimental as soon as a buyer's market presents itself again.

I learned to fly at Saffend too! Great place because it has full ATC and is situtued very close to controlled airpsace. You get great experience mixing it up with the big boys in their passenger jets and being close to "real" commercial pilots. Landing here day in day out means you are not afraid to fly in any controlled airpsace, complex radio procedures, complex nav, approach procedures, etc. Also you can practice radar vectoring etc any time you need.

I enjoyed watching this. You are now sharing the hanger with our syndicate and have to say that the one or two times I’ve needed to move your Sport Cruiser have proven to be the easiest of tasks. It’s a delightful little aeroplane to have as a neighbour.

Our local airfield is no flying before 9am... so not like these guys that can get up in the cool morning summer air that is smooth as silk at 5:30am and go places as the sun is brimming the horizon. By 9am in summer it's already like flying inside a tumble drier. But we can land until 9pm, or sunset - whichever is earlier.
@rnzoli
@rnzoli 11 месяцев назад
Also 9 AM for my airfield during weekends, 8 AM during weekday. All due to surrounding residential areas that encroached on the airfield and now demand stricter noise abatement procedures every month. (Our airfield has been there since 1937....).

Lean modern is just so much better than old heavy tractors. Risen 915 even does 400km/h and has a 3000km range.

I think that your Sportcruiser was from Lugano, Switzerland? If yes, then I have flown in it with a friend of mine that have a PPL. I am an SPL glider pilot.

Hi Terry, Great and very educational videos. I'm looking for a phone holder which does the job well; I see the one you have which I have also seen on other Youtude channels. Can you please give me details of it make and where you got it from. Kindest regards. Stefan

Sorry for the late reply Stefan. It's a RAM small clamp (with lots of protection on the clamp jaws so as not to damage the aircrafts glareshield) with a short RAM extension and a small RAM X-Grip. Works really well and fits larger phones. The cockpit of the Sport Cruiser is too small for a mounted tablet but I use an iPhone 14 pro max and it's perfect. Thank you buddy.
