In this video I restore and colour a photograph of a woman wearing a medieval inspired Jesters outfit from around 1920.
I also talk about the technical and creative process involved with restoring and colouring this photo and also briefly talk about my thoughts on historical costumes and photography.
This video was partially inspired by Bernadette Banner's video:
'500 Years of Correcting “Historical” Halloween Costumes'
which discusses the accuracy, or lack thereof, of modern Historical party costumes vs the actual historical dress they've attempted to replicate.
• 500 Years of Correctin...
I'm personally very curious about how, to me at least, the Jester costume in this video looks more historically accurate to the medieval era than many you find available today. I wonder if that's the advantage of being closer to the historical time period or more to do with this Jester outfit coming from a time when clothes were more commonly hand made? Let me know what you think in the comments! :)

A fascinating watch. I really have to learn to use the curves the way you do. As ever, thoughtful commentary on the woman's efforts at producing her costume. Good choice of colours, by the way!

Thank you so much and if you want to learn more about Curves I'm actually working on a tutorial which features them pretty extensively! it should be out soon...ish :)

You mentioned silvering, wich I guess is clouds of bluish gray discolorisation on old BW photos. If that is the case, would you consider making a tutorial on how you fix this? I have sometimes been able to diminish this using th black and white adjustment layer and darkening the cyan channel, but it does not quite cut it.

Yes, it's caused by the gelatin which holds the silver crystals in place deteriorating over time and the blue shiny crystals rising to the surface and developing further(? As i understand it). In terms of a tutorial it's certainly something i'd consider for the future. In the mean time, I'd 100% recommend checking out 'nomicrowave''s tutorial on here called 'Removing Silvering with Photoshop Elements' as it covers how to remove silvering in both regular Photoshop and Elements and it's my go-to video for whenever I forget best practice for silvering (As my old comment on the video will back up!) I will say as a slight cautionary comment, scanning an image is not generally recommended for silvering as it blasts the image with a load of extra light. I generally weigh up my options and decide that when scanning my own images, my collection is generally shut in the dark most of the time I'll take my chances with a brief scan. Many however recommend tilting your photograph at a slight angle and taking a regular photograph of it, this tilted photograph can then be un titled in Photoshop and generally tilting a silvered image away from the light obviously stops the silver from being reflected and sometimes allows more detail. Although, silvering in my opinion is sadly one of these things which is fairly difficult to perfect fix. :S
