Weird History presents Timeline 1986 - we're going back to '86, prime 80s, when we would see terrible tragedies such as the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion and Chernobyl meltdown. But it wouldn't be all bad news, 1986 would also see such highlights as the inception of Pixar, Clint Eastwood became mayor and great movies like Top Gun and James Cameron's Aliens. Check out the news, sports, culture, and entertainment in the year 1986.

Too many great memories of 1986. Graduating from college, moving to another state for grad school that fall. I couldn’t wait to go, but missed my family and our cats. Making new friends, seeing Top Gun, falling in love for the first time. Enjoying my independence, but feeling joy when my family came to visit. My parents were still in their 50s and pretty healthy. My sister turned 18 and we enjoyed getting to know each other as adults. I won’t ever forget this day or the Challenger explosion.

...well I'm glad you enjoyed '86 kid 'cause mine began with tragedy, and didn't get any better throughout the following months, and ended the same way it started. I can't seem to remember anything after the Statue of Liberty🗽 100th celebration but remember the Challengers recovery operation vividly...5 1/2 months out at sea. President Reagan gave our team a month of R&R, and we ALL got HAMMERED.... I was drunk for twenty days. ... I hope I didn't bore you with all this stuff. ..... I hope you achieved most of your goals, and expectations in your life😎🤙be safe, and STAY SAFE✌️

The Challenger was in January, and Chernobyl was in April. I remember both, and took part in Hands Across America. I remember the 80s fondly, especially the music, fashion, and movies. I remember the debut of MTV on August 1. 1981. It was channel 61 on cable in Phoenix, AZ where I lived at the time. The first video was "Video Killed the Radio Star" by the Buggles. I still have most of my clothes bought back then (yeah, they still fit fine---I'm thinner now), and my collection of Swatch watches I bought back then, which all work just fine. The only thing I didn't like about the 80s was shoulder pads---I removed them. (Jan Griffiths).

My Kennedy moment was 9/11, I was a freshman in high school during biology class. Never forget how time seemed to stand still and everything froze for a day. My teacher wheeled in the classic tv strapped to the cart and we all just sat there glued to it, terrified and in shock.

@José Menendéz Come on. Are we living in the same world by any chance? The youth is getting indoctrinated with ideologies like critical race theory and gender studies who's consequences we are living through right now. Not only is it unscientific garbage but also causes more division than there has been in a long time. The US is on the brink of civil war because of it. People being silenced, canceled, smeared into silence all in the name of social justice and all because of the inability of people to use their own f'in brains. I wouldn't bring a child into this madness even if i was offered 100 millions to do it and i pity anyone that has to grow up in some of our current societies.
