You need to takeoff the valve covers if you plan on changing the two timing chains on the top In order to get to the chain tensioners on the top the built-in from the inside of the top of the valve cover. If you just do the main chain only you wouldn’t need to take the valve covers or manifold off
Its common with Nissan infiniti in general. My 2003 DE motor started making the same noise years ago. Nissan now makes a better tensioner that comes with the kit. The original one it's plastic now I believe it's not or something. The kit coat around $900. Now recently it started happening with my VQ35hr on my infiniti. So time to swap the old out for the new
I’ve done this on 4.0 liter engine pathfinder r51 2007 the worst part and time consuming was removing crank shaft bolt even with electric impact gun but finally done ✅ Also removing rtv seal on timing cover also one thing the timing cover bolt some of them once removed from the same place and you want to put it back it’s loose you have to search for wider bolts and that’s frustrating also but it was fun to do it about 2 weeks just doing little every day 2-4 hrs every day depending on the mode 😅
@@fatboifrmupt9512 i live in Brooklyn it been in the 20s at night for bout 3 weeks..i was waitin for it to warm up..i found a place that sales engines n transmissions..im gonna just buy a new engine its under $1000 with a warranty..im not payin $1200 to any mechanic unless its an engine swap..if you need the info i can send you the number
@@fatboifrmupt9512 my maxima ran perfect...monly drove to the store or a quick spin..then recently went to start the car an i heard that sound an cut the car off its been 3weeks
that first engine is a straight up stuck shim bucket or could be anything loose bouncing around under the valve cover and needs to check under valve cover and or just run engine oil flush to clean finicky bucket shims
Is there anyway to inspect these timing chain guides without ripping the whole front of the engine apart? Or is there a test that can be done to positively identify guide failure?
Yes, you can remove the little black inspection window on the left side of the timing cover and you will be able to see the failure. The "slack guide" slightly drops down so your tensioner has nothing to push against. The plastic block that the tensioner was supposed to push against now sits below the tensioner plunger and the plunger is going to be overextended and pushing against the metal part of the guide. As a result, the chain will be loose and it rattles. Normally it goes away after the car warms up but over time it will get worse and worse. Total design failure by Nissan on that slack guide but it's mostly on 3.5 Maxima, Altima and Quest while Murano, Z car and some others have a "normal" slack guide. (Pretty much the same engines but different slack guides 🙄. You can google the pictures for a slack guide for Z car and Maxima and you'll see what i'm talking about - it's criminal)
Hey so I just did my gallery gaskets and timing chain and ruined my motor👌🏽. I’m pretty sure I timed it correctly however I’m sure not sure. I tensioned the chain by cranking the motor without the fuel pump fuse. But my motor has no compression. I removed my cam cover to find that my primary chain AND my secondary cam chains were loose. I never touched my secondary cam chain so I’m wondering how it came loose. The tension was good when I put it all together. Anyways I’ve cranked the motor multiple times doing my compression testing and I feel like the valves have to be destroyed by now. Looking through the intake manifold I can see my intake valves look alright, I’m sure looks can be deceiving. Other than the valves looking ok I noticed they don’t move very much If they do move at. (I can only see a slight movement cranking using the starter and it’s minimal. Does this mean the valves are bent and stuck in position? The movement from the intake valves should be noticeable correct ? : I noticed the chain was loose by turning the engine over by hand while observing the valves. And I could only hear it skipping every now and again (seams to only do it when I changed directions). That’s when I removed the cam cover to see a little bit more. I remember hitting a slight stuck part that felt like a spark plug was in a cylinder (they were all removed) but it took minimal effort to overcome. My biggest questions are how does my secondary chain just come loose? Could an interference between the valves cause the chain to jump? If the timing was off a tooth or so wouldn’t my valves contact and damage before my chain damages? And from my understanding I would need to be more than 20 degrees off to cause this kind of damage. From my understanding the intake vvel ladder is not serviceable therefore I need new heads. Also how can a cam sprocket move with the chain but doesn’t actuate the valves? (The chain only skips every once and a while but still reliably turns the sprocket) I know I will need to take my rocker covers off to measure the clearance between buckets but I’m trying to make sense of this mess I’m dealing with. Are they seized? I don’t see how re timing this motor will fix this problem as my valves are just not in sinc... there not actuating altogether. (Unless the movement isn’t noticeable by eye) I haven’t taken apart my motor yet but the best theory I have is my motor had contact with the valves, the valves stuck in the down position (valve springs compressed), and now only the very tip of my cam lobes are touching the bucket cause little to no movement. I am a NEWB and I decided to learn EVERYTHING about motors on a vq37 🤣. I’m already 1000$s into this car and I understand I probably need a new motor however I would like to learn what happened so I can learn.
Oh good I don’t have that. I was at 206k miles on my 2006 Nissan Altima SE 5 speed with VQ35DE and thought it could possibly have a timing chain problem.
My car just started doing the same thing. Noise is there and sometimes not even at all. Increases as car revs up when driving. It only has 80,000 btw. 🤦♂️
Would a timing chain rattle throws a code? I haven '12 m37x hear a ticking rumble at idle sometime. But can hear it driving at low speed. Sound coming from drivers side of engine compartment.
@Lailahs BubbuliciousFlavaEnt Yea for me. It's my catalyst converter heat shield..which is rusted so is vibrates. Should get that noise diagnosed to make sure. I at first thought it was timing chain.
That sounds terminal. I have a 2004 Infiniti G35 sedan, automatic. Car is very nice, well maintained but it has 202k miles. I bought it, I've only out 50 miles on it. Oil change was recent. The engine purrs but on a cold start after the car has sat a while, the engine has a loud rattle that lasts 2 seconds. Sounds just like a car after oil change and no oil in the filter. Is this the timing guides worn? I know these engines tend to run a long time. This car runs like new. Any thoughts? I'd gladly post a good video if someone wants to hear it. Thanks
My car stopped on way hone from getting fixed and the car stalled while at 40 mph I think it can be timing chain anyone else know what it can be 05 infiniti fx35
My husband's 2006 nissan maxima needed a new timing chain a few years ago, apparently due to that shitty plastic guide that broke originally. We ended up taking his car to a mechanic who ended up being an absolute nightmare drug addict backyard mechanic haha (I laugh now but it fucking sucked when he stole our car for 5 months because he was strung out and still hadn't gotten around to fixing it and the police wouldn't do anything). Anyways, the guy ended up rebuilding the engine eventuallyyy. The maxima is making a similar ticking sound now and I want to literally jump off a bridge if I have to deal with this bullshit problem again 😂. It's at firestone right now but they don't know what's wrong with it. So I'm not at all sure that the sound it's making is the timing chain but if it is, I give up! It had been losing coolant and overheating so we were waiting for firestone to have an opening to take a look at it (we always go to firestone now after that nightmare guy). Anyway, I filled it up with coolant and on my way there, I got stuck on a bridge (it went up for a boat) and the temp gauge was going up and up and I was getting scared because it was getting too high so I shut the car off. When the bridge went back down, I went to start the car and it was dead. Mind you I was on a one-way bridge with 10 cars stuck behind me and two kids in the car. Literally my worst nightmare. Some nice guys eventually helped me and my kids push the car off the bridge, into the city. I knew pretty much right away that it was a blown fuse in the fusible link battery terminal thing (because that same fuse has blown and been replaced twice in the last year so I knew what the symptoms were like basically). So my husband buys the part, puts it in real quick and it started up fine. We thought "it will be fine to make it 3 miles to firestone". Nope, same shit happened...the temp gauge started rising after driving for about 5 mins and before I could pull over, the car died again and guess what? The freaking brand new fuse blew AGAIN! We just had it towed at that point. Firestone called the next day and said they have no idea what's wrong with it or why it overheats but the technician said "it sounds like there is a midget with a hammer in the engine so it's definitely major internal damage. You might as well get a new car". Until I know FOR SURE that the car needs thousands of dollars in repairs because there is real severe damage, I'm not gonna give up that easy. I mean, he had literally no guesses even as to what the problem could be. Like is it not relevant that there is definitely a coolant leak or something somewhere? Maybe that's a start, i dunno, I'm just a noob. I asked the guys there if they had any idea why that fuse would blow over and over and they said they had no idea why because it's not a common problem. Doesn't all that stuff have to be related? Lord help me!
If you still have the maxima then I would highly suggest joining the forums over at maxima.org Nissanclub.com Nico.com I have a 5.5 gen (2002) maxima and I frequent maxima.org and occasionally the others. Lots of valuable info and I'm certain someone could help y'all out with yalls problem Don't hurt to check em out Good luck with the maxima
Get rid of it!!!! Nissan went to junk after Carlos Ghosn and Renault got involved. Get you a used toyota Avaon. Even one older than your maxima will be faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar more reliable than that Nissan.
Don't know about y'all....but that definitely didn't sound like a timing chain rattle !!!! Not to mention if it rattles it shouldn't go away when warm !! That most definitely is a lifter noise !!!! Lifter noise does come and go ...timing chain rattle LMAO 😂 .... Naaa...
