What most people get wrong is that Chalamet is based on Wilder's portrayal which was just based on making a movie out of it, whereas Depp's is exclusively based on the book and Burton's interpretation (to the point Burton avoided seeing the original movie before making his version).

Every Tim Burton directed movie with Depp is dark. Willy Wonka wasn't suppose to be dark, it was suppose to be a delightful experience, a lesson to be learned. Tim Burton turned Wonka into a Candy Frankenstein which scares little children. Roald Dahl wrote Wonka as a children's novel. Depp's Wonka is evil towards children and all the Oompa Loompas are dressed in Latex bondage suits. It's Edward Scissorhands with a bit of Wonka Eye Candy

I agree. Wilder was so multi-layered as Willy Wonka. It doesn't matter to me that the author of the book hated Wilder and Wilder's version. P. L. Travers hated all aspects of the Mary Poppins movie and yet I think that movie is amazing too. Wilder's Wonka was clever, crafty, mysterious, and artistic. I loved seeing the darkness underneath the bright whimsy of the movie also. To me, the Burton version didn't have any layers, or craftiness: It was just straight out told to you.

Unpopular opinion, but this was an origin story it’s not supposed to be the same. Timothee did an Amazing job of showing Willy’s youth and naïveté and the road to how he became the paranoid Wonka in the Wilder movie. The Burton/Depp colab is based more on the books than any of the movies. But take a break on Chalamet. He did an amazing job and my kids and I will definitely be going back to the theater to see it again!

I think you may have misunderstood the message of Depp’s Wonka. The message of Depp’s Wonka is the importance of family and reuniting with family. One of the reasons Wonka became a deranged as he was in the Depp version is because of his resentment towards his father. Once he mended that resentment, he began to see the importance of family, and not only did he mend the relationship with his own father, but he also gained a family through Charlie’s family as well.

I don't really care which iterations is the best, all 3 performers are amazing. Wilders was a fun and instant classic Wonka to watch time and time again, his performance was unpredictably fun and zany Depps performance was dark and nervous and it matches in the film tone, despite his only one point in this ranking he still did a amazing performance. Chalamet's was a breath of fresh air, with his quirky and charming performance feeling like a actual young Willy Wonka. To be honest, Chalamet's Wonka is a mixture of both Wilders and Depps Wonkas adaptation both the character and the film itself. No matter what others would say, all 3 Wonkas are creatively memberable icon in fiction.

I think of Chalamet as the younger Gene Wilder Wonka. His representation of the youthful inventor, still in his struggling beginning, has his whole career ahead, to gain the experience, wit and cynicism of when he become's Wilder's age. I loved Chalamet's performance, and it made me love Wilder's Wonka even more.

Gene Wilder's version of Wonka is my favourite, but the new Wonka movie as a whole was my favourite out of the three. The story was so heartwarming, and the movie had amazing visuals and such beautiful and original songs and music. For a Moment, Scrub Scrub, and Sweet Tooth were such incredible original songs!! I think the talents of the directing and composers need to be recognized!

Charlie and the Chocolate factory's soundtrack isn't hard to follow imo. Danny Elfman brings his signature darker score which gives This Wonka more an air of mystery where the original film showed more a Whimsical and cheerful side. The songs in Willy Wonka are definitely memorable, 'Pure imagination' is Beautiful piece of music, but I like the Oompa Loompa tunes in the Charlie version a little bit more because One: they're funny and two: The utilization of different genres of music is refreshing instead of reusing the same tune. Gene's Wonka will always be an icon, However I feel Depp's version gets too much disdain. He's awkward, introverted around these people when he hasn't had any contact with Anyone outside of the Oompa Loompas in years, his response is pretty understanding in my opinion. I haven't seen 'Wonka' yet for a issue I have with the casting of Timonthy Chalamet as the titular character. He's probably good in his performance, I just never got onboard the fanbase he has.

I believe Wilder does a great job as the older Wonka. Willy Wonka was what I grew up with and I will always love his portrayal. However I loved Timotheé as the younger Wonka. He brings the curiosity and innocence to the world a young Wonka would have. In my opinion, Wilder and Timotheé need to stand apart because their Wonkas are supposed to be different. They both have the perfect portrayals for the time their movies take place. Also LOVED Wonka. Go see it if you haven’t!

For me is Gene Wilder, Tomothee Chalament and far behind the other two Johnny Depp. Wilder is the first and the original, and because of my memories as a child watching the movie it has tons of power in my ranking. Chalament did an amazing job he is funny, weird and caring which for me are the qualities of a good Wonka same as Wilder. All do I like Deep as an actor for me he goes extra heavy on the weird and forgets the funny and caring. That is my opinion and ranking.

I understand it’s your opinion. BUT another comment I read on here is that original book was NEVER as light hearted (at least in terms of Wonka attitude) as the 1971 film. Things were changed for Wilders version. So apparently Depps version was CLOSER to the book in that way. It’s ok to prefer a more light hearted Wonka BUT again Depp wasn’t inaccurate. Not enough ppl read the books

Johnny Depp was alright as Wonka, but we could have done without the unnecessary backstory of his opposing dentist father. The original book and film didn't delve into Wonka's background, as the focus was on Charlie, and was arguably all the better for it.
