Well, ya gotta hand to the authors of 1960’s Cooking Out Of Doors, they were big into transparency when it came to naming the sandwiches in the book. So yeah, today’s sandwich, Tinned Herring in Tomato Sauce with Fresh Tomatoes, is exactly what you think it is. Well, maybe the act that it is open-faced is news? At any rate, as you know, I am very ok with tinned fish so we should be in good shape here, right? Oh, and I didn’t show it on camera but the herring is sold with tomato sauce in the tin, didn’t have to buy them separately.

I am originally from Central Europe. Herring is very popular in that part of the world. Tarragon is a great idea I need to try it. However I recommend mixing canned herring in tomato sauce with cream cheese, a little bit of cayenne pepper, some minced onion, black pepper, and kosher salt. Spread it over toast and top with fresh tomato sprinkled with salt and black pepper.

The crucial plus up here is to toast the bread first. The warmth of the toast improves the taste of the herrings and adds much needed crunch.

Not related to this video specifically, but to the channel - I notice you have done a great job organizing your videos into playlists. I’d be grateful for a playlist of your highest-rated sandwiches; it would be an excellent resource when I’m looking for a tasty sandwich idea!

My partner JUST got tinned herring with tomato sauce in the mail (a sampler pack to accompany a bunch of smoked herring) so this is amazing timing

I think I’d like this on saltines (I say that about a whole lot of these sandwich fillings. Maybe it’s really the saltines I like.).

"It's a tasty fish" OMG! That line! Reminds me of the Exorcist 3 with George C Scott and the scene about the carp. Hilarious!!!

That second piece of bread can be so crucial. Having a Swedish Great Grandmother, I am well versed in tinned fish and that tarragon sounds great. Going to find fresh tarragon.

The tarragon looked really good, perfect plus up. 👌 i wonder how other herbs might taste here, maybe arugula or basil if you don't have tarragon. Looks like the tomato and herring do some heavy lifting.

I'm not sure about the basil, but arugula would be spot on. Dill would be a treat too.

This sandwich desperately needs the plus-up of toast! I could get excited about that 😃

I've eaten tons of canned fish these last couple of days including Herring in tomato sauce and I think some pickled Jalapenos would've been a great plus up as well. I enjoy that sweet tomato sauce the fish comes in with some added heat. On a loosely related side note: I much prefer the Herring in curry mango sauce I recently discovered and bought thinking "This sounds so incredibly wrong, I have to try it!" to the tomato one at the moment.

Toasted thick-sliced sourdough! Great for any canned fish-with-sauce-or-oil. Mom made me sandwiches to take in grade school. Sometimes sardines w/green onion or capers and Dijon mustard. Nom. But no-one wanted to trade?

I love the simplicity and charm of your videos!!! [And I like sandwiches] I tried drained king Oscar sardines (in oil), made a mixture of crushed tomatoes with basil and Newmans Own mild salsa and a little tomato paste. All on toasted homemade sourdough with butter and pepper!!!!! Delish!

I would try this, because I enjoy all the components. Possible plus ups: lightly toasted bread and/or lettuce or thinly sliced white onions. Plus up theme: crunch😅.

No. Noooo. I’m scared of this one. I don’t know why, I love fish, I love tomato but tinned herring in tomato sauce always terrifies me. I really don’t think I could do this one.

It seems like the texture would be better without mashing up the herring, and by toasting the bread.

It is my personal opinion that every sandwich is better toasted to some degree. Not all sandwiches need to be toasted to the same degree, mind you, but I struggle to find one that this strategy hasn't worked with.
