We have lived in the woods in Gaylord without grass for 20 years. I used to miss it. But lately I am enjoying having flowers and food in my yard instead.

Ogemaw county here. We plant short growth cover crop. Ours is a clover mix. It only grows to about 3 inches tall. It’s drought resistant. Slow growing. And generally lush. Bonus, when my dog eats it she doesn’t throw up because it’s like eating a salad not grass.

On the watering thing. Look into getting a watering tractor. My grandma had one and they are super convenient! Basically, it’s a hose attachment like a sprinkler that doesn’t stay put. The water pressure in the hose makes the tractor move along the hose. Hard to explain but could save you lots of time moving the sprinkler!

If you don't insulate or heat it in the winter, then the washer can't be hit and miss with the weather, you will have to drain the pump after every use or you can put a tiny heater under it, or a heating light type bulb, but if the pump freezes, that is not a cheap or fun repair. Ours is in the garage, we we put a 600 watt heater under it when it gets near zero outside.

Foil makes a huge difference on the floor. Half my cabin is that way.

Quick tip. Post go in the ground 4 ft deep with 6 inches of 3/4 clear gravel for drain. Then attach your 3 ply beam on top of your post with Simpson strong tie bracket Then simple place your floor joist (Crown up ) on top of your supporting beams And plz block your joist for support and strengthen Add your rim joist and your floor is almost complete. How you finish your floor system will be entirety on your skills and experience.

Jay I don't think you're a moron. Since watching the channel I've come to respect the way you go about doing things. They say there's more than one way to skin a cat. I'm not going to try any of them 😊 So as long as your way works for you. That's all that matters. I've learned a lot from you even though I'll probably never have an occasion to utilize the information. Jay and Jen's little tiny house is coming together.😊 I think it's going to look good and perfom the function(s) you need it to. Im glad you put down the silver stuff even though you said the building was going to be seasonal. That mught change in the future. Wishing you the best of success with the completion of the project. 5 or 10 minutes of watering won’t do much good. Put in the bubble foil. You won’t regret it.

I’m gonna try the bubble foil insulation for an 8x8 ‘fort’/mini cabin. It seems the easiest floor insulation option. Thoughts on for the roof? (Keeping in mind it’s a shack/fort). 😊

I have heard mixed reviews using it inside walls due to moisture.....but I know more recently I have seen the brand suggest it as pole barn roofing insulation. I think as long as you are not heating with propane, pressing it against cold exterior metal walls, or doing the WHOLE cabin with it (floor,walls,ceiling) and things can breathe you will be happy. I think it works really good with radiant heat....much like the mylar emergency blankets you see. Best part is it being rodent free......but I know you are BFFs with your pack rat buddies, 😊

@@OffgridwithJayandJen ok, good tips! Thank you! I would be applying it on top of my roof sheathing if I do it that way, and wouldn’t use it on the walls, so it still might be a good option. I’ll likely base it all off of price compared to rigid foam. Rodent proof is important (but I think rigid foam is rodent proof as well ?), even though I do love my little rodent friends! 🤣🤭🤷🏻‍♀️

Thermofoil was put on incorrectly.... Has to go on underneath the joists with shiny side down. This reflects outside effects and will keep bugs and critters out. The insulation then goes between the joists before installing the decking....

Not necessarily, This way is just as effective and install is a breeze. Our reflectix is double sided with the mylar and reflects and protects just fine when installed in this fashion.

No cement here.....we have really hard packed sand, so we don't bother. If we had recently new graded ground or a clearing or different soil it would be a good idea to use it, yes

You can, but this cabin is small and I used a ledger board to rest the joists on instead. Easier and strong in my opinion
