Tour My Cabin, I'm Super Proud of It

One of my proudest builds here on my property was this cabin in the woods. After months of planning and deciding on a design I quickly found out that the planning stage was the easiest part of this whole build. With each piece of wood used to build this cabin coming from my own woodlot, it took me months just to harvest the trees, skid them to my sawmill, saw them into usable lumber even before I started hammering a single nail. With about 8 months of time spent building the cabin after all the wood was sawn, to say this was a long project is an understatement. Let's not get mixed up though, this was well worth it. On today's episode I"ll give you the grand tour of what makes this tiny house/cabin so special to me and why I"m super proud of it. Sure is a great feeling looking back at the project after it's been complete for about 3 years and be able to appreciate it as much as the day I completed it. Glad you're all here for the tour, here we go!

Sandy, the pride you feel in your cabin is well earned and deserved. I am sure your mill has more than paid for itself. It is no small thing to cut the trees down, bunk them up, mill them into lumber and THEN build something so substantial with that lumber. The amount of labor to build a project like this by yourself not to mention the recording of the effort, wow. As for the ladder, there are a lot of options, and I am sure you will find one that works out great; even if it is just to leave it the way it is or to allow for removing it completely and hang it on the wall.

Sandy, that's a fine little cabin. I think it's really cool that the majority of it is constructed from re-purposed site trees. Reminds me of some of the pioneer cabins I have seen in the States. I am impressed at the amount of components you have salvaged from other builds. I bet the view is absolutely beautiful in winter. Well done Sandy. Very nice Sandy!! I like your idea of hinging the ladder, at least if you have more than yourself there. A boat trailer winch would quickly and easily lift it out of your way, giving you a lot more usable space, and also a better out side view, while being able to be lowered if you are going to use the loft! I have a feeling that if you hinged the ladder, it would spend most of its time up and out of your way!

To hold foundation in place, pick two spots, 15-20ft away from base, dig holes, remove dirt then back fill with clean dirt. The pines and fir put out acidic soil. Then plant two Sugar Maples, one in each filled hole. Cut any pines within 20 ft. Remove needles, give a sprinkle of lime in winter when there is snow, add nitrates. This will ensure the Maples take. They grow roots three times the size of above ground. They hold rocks and soil in place, reducing any chance of house movement. Plus they are lovely, attract wildlife.

Any tree around a house or building must be considered. If he likes the ‘feel’ of pine and smell, they do sell miniature pine and fir trees that don’t grow beyond 10-12ft.. they would provide thermal cover, noise reduction, and add wind protection.

Hi Sandy - luv the Tiny House! Just a comment please. -- you mentioned that you did not use OSB on the underside of the floor in the areas that were outside of the wall framing because it was unheated space above. Obviously good and a cost saving - but - it would be worth mentioning that if you used the OSB in that area, you would have had rot problems with that OSB due to drainage through the open web walking surface and deck. You would have been replacing that on a regular basis adding extra work and extra cost. I am sure you are aware of that but thought it may be worth mentioning. Love the channel - never miss. What a great way to learn. We built our first house in a pine wood like that here in SC. What a big mistake. We left pines right up against the house within 10-12 ft of the house. Two things we learned the hard way. Pines have shallow roots but they grow very tall and catch winds. They are easy to uproot and falling on the house is dangerous. Same with pin oaks but worse with pines. Second thing, pine beetles. They ate the pine trees around the house making them easy to cut in half and fall. They also were drawn to our pine framed house. So I truly now understand why developers bulldoze trees down before putting up houses. We cut the pines close to the house, laying down in the yard (fortunately we lived on 100 acres so we had the room to do that but on the small lot we live on now, we would have to pay for professionals to do it). Then we called in the bulldozers. Be sure you treat your house and cut down pines anywhere close to your home, like at least 75 ft from your home (remember they grow very tall). DON'T plant pine trees, white pines, whatever, close to your home. We had someone do that to make a privacy hedge between our house and their's. The white pines grow fast. But they grow very tall and we had to sell the house because the neighbor wouldn't cut his white pines down once they got up to 30' tall and threatened our home.

Another point is the dreaded termites that are drawn to dead wood. You don't want to leave dead trees or stumps up close to your house. And have your house treated for termites. Having termite inspection and treatments are good for re-sale. Maybe not necessary for your cabin in the woods but for a normal house that you may be selling in the future, keep up with that.

You don’t have to be an engineer to understand that this cabin will be shifting on its blocks. It all starts with your foundation, if you don’t get that right nothing else matters. I personally would be terrified at the thought that the building could shift or slide downhill. I’m not saying this to dig or be mean, I say it because it’s a serious concern. The cabin is beautiful and you should be proud of it. If it were me, I’d sink a couple telephone phone pole sized timbres in front on each side just for peace of mind.

My grandfather used to say that there is nothing cozier than the sound of rain on the roof. I feel the same way. Your asphalt roof not only looks great but will be much more satisfying to listen to the rain patter on- metal sucks!!!!

Yup, I’m back. Your cabin would have been my dream home 50+ years ago. I grew up in the woods and still live in the timber here in Oregon. Never got the chance to build a cabin. Still want to. Wanted to toss out an idea for you. You talked about enjoying the view while kicking back inside or on the deck. But you cut the view off with the railing. I’ve seen railing made with rebar, cattle fencing, or small vertical balusters. I know it’s not wood but just an idea. The cattle fencing was framed around the edges with wood and it looked pretty neat. Like always, live your channel. Keep it going. 😊

That's a good idea Russ. Something to see better through is a great idea. Will have to see what I can do for the future.

Wowwww! I know NOTHING about building ANYTHING but I can tell you put a lot of skill and hard work into this wonderful cabin. I'm so jealous. I'd love to have one just like it myself one day. :)

The cabin is the reason I started watching your channel. One little thing the siding is just lap siding, ship lap is when the boards are notched to overlap each other and lay flat. Great build, I'm going to do one like it but wire it for 12v..

The house looks very cozy and is skilfully processed in detail. They obviously have a good knowledge of craftsmanship and materials. I would love to spend a winter weekend here with snow! How many m² is the house? Does it also have a toilet, shower and connection and drain?

Wow! I am so impressed. I''m new to this channel and I can tell how much you love your cabin. Brilliant idea regarding the ladder on wheels/bar to pull it to the side. That was bothering me until you explained it. You put a lot of thought and detail into this build. Thank you for sharing your amazing talent with us.
