I decided I’m going to pull the trigger and try to learn how to make my own babies. Wish me luck...and send me your prayers. LOL. I’m a determined person, so I’m either going to get decent at it or die trying. Hehe.
I'm a boy and I've been making reborns since I was 12 and I'm fifteen now and my girlfriend is getting into reborns and I use acrylic paints when I'm painting my babies and it works just as well a Genesis paints and maybe even better tbh right now I am working on the skya asleep and Logan asleep kits from Bb and I'm making them into twins for my girlfriend but rooting is not my specialty:(
WhyWeDoThis Idk its amazing to know a boy is interested in this! Im 17 and a female! I mentioned reborns to my boy friend an he said it was interesting!
If you’re still using a glass and tile medium with your paints, where do you get them and which brand? Because the Folk Art glass and tile medium does not exist ANYWHERE in the world anymore! Desperate to paint my kit!
I’m so happy to find your tutorials! I really want to try reborning, but many other tutorials seem so rigid and the heat set paints would have to drive an impatient person like me nuts! I’m used to painting creatively with acrylics, and you as a fellow free spirit have been such an inspiration! Thank you!
Miss Sharon, You have to be the BEST teacher I have found so far! Thank You for addressing the fear part, because that was my problem! I'm afraid I will mess up or fail, but you make me feel confident in myself to do it. So, I am going to be giving it a try after Christmas. Thank You for your videos!!! SC
Thank you. I’m going to try my first very soon. Lots of bad in my life trying to care for my mom who is going into early onset dementia, and I look at these babies and think how much I want to expand from doing landscape canvases to doing this. I love to paint. I also have a crazy idea that the my dolls could be used to help someone with dementia, depression, anxiety, etc. I’m not sure where all this may go for me, but thank you for your instruction and encouraging words.
I also have arthritis in my fingers and ancles and knees. I have spent a lot of money on reborning, but the paint would not hold, you were the first to tell me about the glass and tile medium, but it was not in my country to buy. Finally after two years it is, so I am sitting here and starting my first kit with the medium. Thanks for the tips.
Years later, this is still being a great help! Thank you! I wasn't sure where I was going to start, but after watching your videos, I have too, decided to go with the Folk Art paints! The tips are most appreciated. Now I just have to wait until my Glass and Tile medium gets here! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
@@rosedominguez3682 I'm not sure, I know the glass and tile medium works, I've not tried the other. If you have a scrap piece to test on, or even an inner part of a limb you wont see
Very interesting to see some of the differences with the paints you use and Genesis, thank you for sharing!!! I did not realize you could not keep reusing your mottling sponges like with Genesis. Have a blessed Easter!!! Hugs
I think this is wonderful that I can use those paints because the other paints I have bought are very expensive and don't last long at all. Thanks I will be watching more of you videos.
I’ve got my paints and finally ready to air dry paint my bountiful baby kit!! Im so excited to see you’re videos i was never happy with the thought to “bake” a doll, especially over and over and u along with some google have given me so much hope and knowledge! Thank you! 😊 Also, ive noticed there are other brand of mediums for matte acrylic specifically like golden and liquitex, on the bottles it also states it makes acrylic paint adhere better & that you can mix with water for thinner consistency so im guessing it does the same as the glass and tile medium. Just in case anyone was looking for another brand as i was. I hope this is helpful 😊
I’m a citizen also and have arthritis in a couple of my fingers and I tried my first painting With acrylic paint and created two dolls was a challenge but you get better and better at it thanks for the inspiration.
I’m totally trying one! :) I ordered an inexpensive kit (bountiful baby) on eBay. Have goodies and paints coming to begin. It should be interesting. I feel like it’s something I could really do, I’m seriously stepping out of my comfort zone but I’m excited to try :) btw Thank you for making these videos!
So I started out reborning and I have to say it is so much fun . And also don't be afraid to try new stuff on your doll and to make mistakes . And my doll is turning out good for my first time .
I use the acrylic paint also but I don't use the glass and tile medium and I don't have a problem with getting the colors to stick I've been using them for about 3 or4 years now and I love them I also use the regular Matte varnish at the end after I let the paint cure for a couple of days
iluvallmybabies what varnish do u use, i was thinkinng of using msc but i found out theyre lacquer based which i think is a thinner im afraid it would damage my repaint
@Butterfly Baby Kisses Nursery lol I am definitely one of those people, watching your videos hoping to get the courage to buy a kit a make it happen 😂 Thanks for this video and your support! I will definitely let you know if I ever dare to and how it goes! Blessings! 😊
I am hopefully going to start we bring the next couple of months because where I live it's really hard to find everything I cannot find glass and tile medium In a store so I started looking on Amazon it is $22 for six bottles of glass and tile medium I don't think I'll need six right away but I found it and then I need to order my kit which is the Ella kit from bountiful baby and then I need to order mohair and Rooting tools i'm 13 years old and you're one of the people that actually taught me that I could use acrylic paint that's because of Heard genesis heat sets can be like really bad for you. I have been going back and watching all of your tutorial videos trying to figure out what colour paint I need you have helped me so much thank you
That means so much to me. Try going directly to Plaid Folk Art's website and you might be able to buy one or two bottles of glass & tile medium at a time. I have also seen it on ebay (for only one bottle). I wish you great success in doing your reborn. Please feel free to share when she is done! Sharon x0x0
Butterfly Baby Kisses Nursery thanks for the tip but I think I'll just order off Amazon because I live in Canada and to get things across the border is ridiculous because I have to get the kit and the body and stuff from bountiful baby which is located in the United States and it is horrendous to get things across the border and with Amazon prime I don't need to worry about shipping but thanks for the tip
Thank you so much for your videos, I am really enjoying your channel. I need some help though, I am from the UK and I cannot buy folk art glass and tile medium here. I am making my first reborn with acrylic artists paints and need to find the right thing to make them stick. Also, why is it necessary to use distilled water? Will tap water not work? Thank you for your time xx
Distilled water is inexpensive. You can get a half gallon for a buck. There are no minerals to interfere with the paint. You can purchase Plaid Folk Art Outdoor Matte Sealer - it works just the same. Try their website or ebay. Hope this helps.
Ty! Ik I'm exposing myself but idc and also tysm for the tips! I ordered Levi by Bonnie Brown and I hope my first try is good I think I can do thx for the inspiration!
Thank you so much I love the way you do your dolls I missing your citizen to and I just started at first my pants were too thick it was probably love my doll but I'm not giving up like you said I like to know at the end do you put anything to make the paint stick thank
Hello, Im new to your channel but I love it already .. I wanted to say for the sponge with holes if you want to afford puting paint inside the holes you’d probably try to use your brush to aply paint only on the surface so the paint wouldnt go inside the holes ... I hope that would be helpful! I wish You the best of luck !
Yes, that's what I do. I pluck holes in the sponge myself and brush the paint on the sponge so the paint will not go inside the holes when I apply it to the vinyl.
Hello! I have really enjoyed watching your videos! I am new in this art of reborning and let me tell you that you are my inspiration! Thank you! I have a question. So, since I will be using acrylic paint, the only time I will bake my baby would be at the end to cure it with the thinning medium?? Does it have to be done in a New Wave oven or just any convection oven?? Thanks again !!
That's great that you want to try your hand at painting, and I'm glad I was an inspiration to you. You can use any convection oven, as long as the heating element is far enough from the bottom so your vinyl won't get scorched. I don't recommend baking inside your home - fumes are toxic. If you are using acrylics with glass & tile medium, you can just bake at the end with the Genesis medium. I actually like the thinning medium mixed with a little Genesis Matte Varnish. It works even better. I bake 11 minutes at power level 6 - let cool, and then bake again. Good luck! Let me know how it goes. Sharon x0x0
the specs dry on because I don't see them until it's too late. little hairs too. I do my paint fresh. do you think it is coming from my brushes? I use water and alcohol to clean brushes.
I just saw this sorry! Yes, it can be coming from your brush. Also from the paint having some dried out flecks. If you work in good lighting you will see them as you're painting and be able to flick them off.
I had fun painting my kimmee. But couldn’t and haven’t sealed her. Yet. I don’t know how. She’s acrylic painted. And don’t want to bake. Is there an air dry varnish or waterproof sealer for finishing up my babies ? I’ve saved to my shopping bag or cart on amazon FA glazing medium and satin varnish and matte varnish. To seal/h2o proof. Once done painting. Hope they work and help. But can’t find a glass/tile medium on there. Where’d you get yours? Like joanns or Michaels ?
I just checked and they are out of stock at the website and ebay doesn't have any of the kind I use either. I would go to Creative Newborns channel and ask her what sealer she uses. She uses acrylic air dry paints as well. Good luck!
So I am a first time reborn painter. And I trying to find out if I can use paints that Require no heating? At all. Is it just the Matt varnish the you have to heat with the Acrylics? As a last step in finishing you reborn baby?
No you don't have to bake the varnish if you use folk art outdoor sealer or folk art glass & tile medium. This does take some practice. I apply it to a cosmetic wedge that has been ripped off for a rougher surface. I apply to the vinyl in very small sections. You have to change your wedge often because it will get saturated and not work any more and you have to wash your brush often because it will get caked on there too. Hope this helped you. Good luck!
Getting ready to start my very first reborn- bought kit from Bountiful Baby with Genesis heat set paints-but after watching your videos, maybe will try water based paints. I'm a little scared about baking paint and its health effects. Is that why you switched to air dry paint?'
Yes it is, but now I use a portable convection NU-Wave oven in my garage with the door open and don't stay in there. I use Genesis and acrylics now. Both are fine for me.
It should say 'matte' somewhere on the bottle, and yes, put a little bit in each batch of paints and distilled water. Use it plain at the end to give a finish coat.
i painted my first reborn with acrylics today, almost following your tutorial to a T with the same brands and everything- but her paint has already chipped in two spots even when being very gentle with her, is there anything you recommend to stop that?
I'm also a senior and I'm scared to start. I only have a cheap kit and it's a 12in and very light grey ush vinyl.so what do u think I should start as a colour? ty
Love your videos. I have just started my first kit. I am using acrylic air dry paints. My problem is my layers are not thin enough. Is there a way I can fix that or do I need to strip her? I only did 2 coats of flesh so far
I just started on my first reborn a few days OK but after it dried it had lint all over the doll. I strip the paint off but it's almost impossible to apply glass and tile medium. Is there any tricks so it wouldnt be so. Hard to paint the doll?
You have to apply thinly in small areas at a time and keep changing your cosmetic wedge, and keep washing your brush. This is when you are sealing the doll with just the medium at the end. When you are applying color, you need to add a small bit into each batch of paint and distilled water, just about a 1/4 tsp or so. You have to make sure you are working with paint that is clean with no specks, and work in a lint free environment, with plenty of lighting so you can see what you are doing. I also find that using new paints helps as they have no dried material in them, and I find Folk Art matte acrylics worked the best for me. Hope this helps.
Hi! I love watching your videos! You inspired me to try reborning with craft paints (actually, my first time reborning with any kind of paint). My babies are cute, but chalky. Is there anything that might fix this? Or anything I need to avoid next time? Thanks for all the great tutorials!
Did you use the Folk Art medium too thickly or the paints too thickly? That would be the reason. Try wiping the doll down with a clean, soft, warm and slightly wet cloth and see if this helps.
Sharon, Can you help me? I am reborning the Shyann kit. This is my very first time reborning, I have just done the mottling layer with another very thin fleshtone layer. Her leg is a bit to pink for what I want. what should I do now keep going with flesh layers or should I do a mint green wash? Thanks in advance :-)
Go on the internet and look up "color wheel". Choose a good one and look at it - look at the opposite color as the "pink" that you think is too extreme and do a wash or two (watery) of that opposite color.
I can not find the folkart glass and tile medium anywhere ( all sold out), would liquitex transparent Gesso work do you think? I love your work and tutorials, thank you.
@@lifewithsharonb5138 Thank you. I'm in Australia so it's still hard to find those even on ebay. Someone has recommended Americana multi purpose sealer so I have ordered that to try. Thank you so much for your reply :)
My first baby went really red orange I have now brought a maddie fake kit its like a pinkish grey but im worried that it will go the same way how do I stop it. I was looking at neutralising it with a green-yellow
Yes, it lasts. I bake mine with a layer of Genesis thinning medium - twice. You can seal it with Plaid Folk Art Glass & Tile medium brushed onto a cosmetic wedge and work in small sections. You will need to keep changing your sponge because when it gets saturated it doesn't provide a matte finish any more. This takes some practice.
I need help on lips. My reborn had red lips ,didn't to like them so I pealed the red off just to find they:re now peach. How do I make them natural looking ?
I just saw this. Sorry! I use lip/nail blush color (this is a Genesis color) or Black cherry (acrylic) and do the outline first, and then the creases. Then I lightly color in very thinly the lips leaving the upper middle 'bump' a bit paler - hope this helps.
For mistakes in painting, you "can start all over again" by using the Goof-Off paint remover... works well, but you need to wash the doll very well afterwards, let it air out for a few days. Goof-off wont harm your skin, however wear surgical gloves. Hope this helps some. Thank you I love your videos. I paint dolls also with Acrylics, never tried the genesis paint. However I'm confused with the baking part, and the stove you are using. When do you bake the doll, before you paint them, at the end of painting, or after a few paint coats, can you explain the fundamentals of this baking with acrylics? Thank you, love your videos.
I used Genesis Thinning Medium as a final seal and matte coat and then baked in a Nu-Wave portable convection oven. I like the effect it gives. But you can seal with air dry sealer like glass & tile medium that does not require baking. It is tricky to master however. Thanks for your lovely comment! Sharon
I repaint babies and other types of dolls/baby dolls and I have always really wanted to do a reborn doll! This gives me so much hope that I can do it! Painting these babies is much different than doing a PVC doll but this video gave me so much hope!
Hi just found you, never knew you could use these paints..not sure if you have made a video on the list of colour you use. If you have have you a link as I'm finding it hard to find all your video's.thanks in advance..
Go to my channel and click on "videos". Sort by "most popular". All my tutorials will be there. I think I did a list of colors in at least one of them. Thank you! Sharon
Buy a Bountiful Baby kit on sale - a small newborn size - you don't even have to purchase the cloth body for it. They also have separate limbs. You can purchase practice limbs on ebay too. Good luck!
@@lifewithsharonb5138 yeah I did that mixed it with engine red my first baby is almost done. The black cherry made huge difference. I cant believe how amazing he turned out.
Yes indeed! Sometimes you can use the same batch and add color to it to use it for another step. For instance, I start with a flesh color, and when I'm done with that I add a reddish color to it so I don't waste it. Depending on what the used mixture looks like will determine if I need more water or more medium. Hope this helps!
If the paint adheres to the vinyl and remains permanent, that is the test. I found my best results with those acrylics that I have used with success - like Folk Art. So I hope this helps!
Folk Art outdoor sealer matte works the same. Try Joann's fabric store, ebay, or direct from Plaid Folk Art's website. I can't recommend any other product because I have no other experience with any other product. Good luck. I hope you find it somewhere.
I would have to re-watch this video in order to tell you that. Start with the basics - red, blue, yellow, green, & purple. Add off-white, brown & black. You can make any color by mixing these together. Hope this helps somewhat. Thanks for watching!
Hi can anyone tell me how many bottles of glass and tile medium I need for one baby? I see it's on joanns website in 2oz bottles. That's the only place I've found that carries it!
One bottle will last you for several babies. You only need a 1/2" mop brush dipped in it for each paint batch you use. You'll of course need more for the finish coat. Hope this helps
@@chelseahoggard3085 Yes, Folk Art Outdoor Matte Sealer works just the same. It's usually on Plaid Folk Art's website or occasionally on ebay. Hope this helps!
No, you don't, unless you use a heat set varnish then yes, you need to bake twice (after the first baking cools, of course). You can use acrylic paints and matte (seal) with Genesis Matte Varnish as well. Hope this helps! Sharon
You don't have to bake them. I just like the texture medium that is a by-product of Genesis thinning medium. It gives a nice matte finish with a slight texture - you don't need to bake though.
Absolutely not. The fumes that the vinyl paint and thinner emit in your home are dangerous to your health and any pets you might have. I lost 2 canaries by doing this! Don't risk it!
Only Genesis Heat Set paints & varnishes NEED to be baked. Any 'heat set' paints are just that - they need to be baked. You can, however, bake a doll that has been painted with acrylics if you want to varnish the doll with heat set varnishes. Hope this helps.
You can. The results are better with distilled water because there are no minerals in it. The minerals in tap water may make the paint look different. I was instructed when using air dry paints that distilled water is best. You can get a gallon in the supermarket for a buck.
I have never used that kind. If you are brave, try to bake it but you may end up losing your kit. Call the manufacturer and see if it can be heated. I never use my kitchen oven - too dangerous with the fumes. I have a Nu-Wave oven and bake in the garage. I use power level 6 for 10 minutes.
Do you have ebay? Do you have craft shops? Michael's, Joann's Fabrics, Hobby Lobby? Or go directly to the manufacturers like Plaid Folk Art and order. Hope this helps.
No, not if you strictly use air dry products. I like to use Genesis matte varnish sometimes over the acrylics and bake, but it's not necessary. You can use air dry matte varnish as a final coat. Hope this helps.
