I just use empty SMS paint bottles. These are 30ml and are ideal for thinning a jar of Tamiya LP paint. I just wrap a piece of painter's making tape around the bottle and write on it, but I think I might try the heat gun trick and use the labels off the original Tamiya jar. I usually use the empty Tamiya jars for mixing small amounts of other Tamiya or Humbrol paints for airbrushing.

Awesome idea Justin. I pre-thin my regular Tamiya paint but just in the normal bottle. I should transfer them to a larger bottle or at least the most used colors I have.
@JHartModelworks

Thanks Vic. I clean out muy Tamiya Pots and keep them for mixing custom colors, or holding UMP cleaner or lacquer thinner for cleaning brushes, or bleach for stripping small chrome parts.

Great video! I use automotive acrylic lacquer paint. Red,yellow,blue,black and white. From this I can mix any color. (except metallics) I store them in plastic bottles (solvent proof) from e-bay. Best regards Justin.

Very cool Geoff. I have several of the primary colors, all 3 blacks, gloss and flat white, as well as the all the clears, clear colors, and most metallics for the Tamiya stuff.

Thanks Jeff. I honestly think before I started pre-mixing entire pots, I was loosing a lot more paint to the mixing cups by mixing small bits at a time. Not to mention when you are tight on time, you don't have to waste any time mixing up paint. Wave to the wife for me 😁

It was like $15 I think. Link is in the description. It gets hot like a hair dryer with out nearly as much air so decals don't blow away.

I live in Virginia and in forty years of model building I have never actually seen any of the Tamiya lacquer paints in any hobby store or anywhere else I’ve ever been. The only thing we’ve ever had here is the Tamiya acrylic.
@JHartModelworks
@JHartModelworks 4 месяца назад
The lacquers weren't here until just 2 or 3 years ago I think. Tamiya USA really drug their feet bringing them into the US. The rest of the entire world had access to them before we did. I was ordering them from Sunward hobbies in Canada for a year before they were finally released in the US. They are still a fairly specialty product. I typically order my Tamiya LPs online. I know Burbank's house of hobbies and lionheart hobby carries them. I'm in the Dallas area and none of the local places here carry the lacquers either. You can do the same thing with the Tamiya Acrylics, but I prefer lacquers for airbrushing and acrylics to brush paint, personally.

@@JHartModelworks I looked on Amazon for them. It was something like $2.99 each and another $2.99 to have them shipped so it seemed pretty rediculous to me. I appreciate the information. I will check them out online. I think I will probably order about five or six of the colors to try and if I really like them I’ll order about $50-$100 worth of them.
@JHartModelworks
@JHartModelworks 4 месяца назад
@@PatricksScaleModelShop Sounds like a good plan. I've been trying to cut down or maximize on shipping as well. I switched away from European shops and paints like splash. Shipping has just become ridiculous. One shop i the UK wanted $20 to ship $5 worth of sanders. I only use Amazon as much as I do because my son has a prime account, so I don't have the shipping costs.

@@JHartModelworks yeah I have Amazon Prime so I do get some model supplies pretty quick and with no shipping fees but paint for some reason is rediculous

I don't get to build often enough to mix up that much of color paints. I'd be afraid of it dieing in the bottle before I ever got to use it. I will probably mix up some of the basics that I always have to have. Great tip Justin! The label removal tip is great! That qualifies as a "twofer" deal! 😂
@JHartModelworks

Glad you enjoyed it Tim. I find I'm always running out of things like flat and semi-gloss black, and Flat aluminum. I've had some of these for well over a year and they are just fine. The ptfe cap inside the lid keeps things pretty air tight, I haven't even had to add thinner to any of them. Hope you get more bench time soon. Have a good one.
@timryan1785
@timryan1785 2 года назад
@@JHartModelworks Thanks for the reply, I actually get plenty of bench time, just don't focus on the build. I get distracted by other possible builds and next thing, I got 2 more kits in process. LOL~ A.D.D. I know....
@JHartModelworks
@JHartModelworks 2 года назад
@@timryan1785 I feel ya there. I have to force my self to only build one at a time or I'll have 20 kits started with only bodies and engines done. By the time I get to the interior I'm already in planning phase for the next one.

Great tip but why not unicorn tears? Any idea where to get 4oz bottles of alclad stainless steel. That’s what I use the most and can’t find it in 4oz like the black backer.
@JHartModelworks
@JHartModelworks 2 года назад
The only things I've seen Alclad sell in those huge bottles are the gloss black, and the aguagloss. I'm sure Mr Leveling Thinner for the gloss and Mr. Rapid Thinner for the flats, would work. When I started doing this I only had the small glass bottle of MLT and I bought the Tamiya thinners.

@joespicer9577
@joespicer9577 Год назад
Will this also work on acrilyc and enamel paint
@JHartModelworks
@JHartModelworks Год назад
Yes it will. You just need to make sure you use the right thinners. Acrylic is difficult as there are different kinds of acrylics. there are solvent based acrylics like tamiya's which you can thin with their x20A thinner, but honestly lacquer thinner like mr hobby's leveling thinner (for gloss paints) and rapid thinner (for flats and metals) work even better with tamiya's acrylics. Then there are water based acrylics like vallejo. But if you to thin a water based acrylic like vallejo with lacquer thinner, it turns into a jelly, globular, mess that will jack up an airbrush real quick. As long as you use the right thinner for your paint at hand you can pre-thin and store it like this just fine though.
@DracoMeadors
@DracoMeadors 4 месяца назад
Hey Justin, have you ever mixed the Tamiya LP paint with Mr. Color self leveling thinner?
@JHartModelworks
@JHartModelworks 4 месяца назад
Yep I've mixed the LPs and the acrylics both with it. They spray wonderfully. Use Mr. Leveling Thinner for gloss. Use Mr. Rapid Thinner for flats and metallics. Use half and half, or Half leveling and half plain mr color thinner for semi gloss. The only real reason I'm using Tamiya's thinner right now is because I still have some left :)

will these last as long as the not thinned variant?
@JHartModelworks
@JHartModelworks 7 месяцев назад
Using these glass bottles with the PTFE seals in them I have paints that were thinned 2 years ago, they shake up and spray perfectly fine and have lost little to no thinner at all. If you do loose a little thinner just add a little back in, but I've had absolutely no issues.
@guiomarmalpartida7870
@guiomarmalpartida7870 Год назад
Could you also use plastic bottles?
@JHartModelworks
@JHartModelworks Год назад
You can, but you would need to make sure it was something like PTFE that the lacquer thinners wouldn't weaken and/or eat through. And with plastic there is more chance of loss through evaporation.
