In this video I'm going to tell you my best tips for pouring a large concrete slab foundation. This concrete slab is about 5000 square feet and took 70 yards of concrete. When you pour a large concrete slab like this or larger, you have to have a plan. You should not only be thinking of the best way to pour the slab but also how you're going to finish the concrete as well. When I pour a concrete slab of this size, I do it in stages, always keeping a wet edge so we don't get a "cold joint". A cold joint is when the edge of the newly poured concrete starts setting up before you get back there with new concrete and get that section screeded & bull floated. Having a process and a plan will help eliminate cold joints and allow for a smoother and faster installation.

Nice job on the concrete estimation Mike. He many machines did you need to finish this slab? Did you need to get the lights out. I do a lot of radiant slabs but never knew you could run the hot water through the tubing to help speed up the drying time. Did you put water reducer in this one? We use a pump way to much I think and it’s over $1000 here in upstate New York. I just did a video on one we pumped. Was to muddy to get the trucks in there. Kinda spoils the guys with that pump. Lol

Thanks for the video. Cool to see how other people run thier jobs. I work in south Texas. All commercial concrete. What a difference climate makes. We pour at night all year long and the goal is to get it poured out before the sun comes up. We rarely use calcium and never in 4000 psi. Too hot. Also, we have grade beams below everything. Sometimes piers and grade beams. I was surprised by the 800 for the pump and guess it's cheap because you didn't run another 100 cy through it for the foundation.

Hi guys....I have a question: I am in the process of laying a slab.For various reasons I have decided to add a retarder to the mix. I have to use a concrete mixer, due to very poor access for a truck....and the ridiculous cost of a pump truck (in Australia). I am using Sika Retarder N, which requires approx 200ml (in liquid form) of retarder per 100kg of cement content, and gives approx 3-4 hours of initial setting delay (depending on temp C). This works out @ about 25ml per load. The data sheet says to add retarder "with the water".....therefore my question is can I measure the required amount of water (in a bucket) required for the concrete in each load, and add the 25ml to the bucket, mix it thoroughly and then add it to the concrete and then mix? Or would I add the retarder after I add the water. I would appreciate any and all constructive thoughts.....regards to all, have a very safe & happy XMAS & New Year!
@MikeDayConcrete
@MikeDayConcrete 4 года назад
Sounds to me like you would add it to the water first, then mix the water and retarder to the mix.
@returntozion9287
@returntozion9287 4 года назад
@@MikeDayConcrete Yeh thanks mike, I mean I suppose either way would work, but like you say....pre-mixing with water (since the retarder is in liquid form) would allow for greater diffusion in another liquid (that being the water), and therefore a better distribution of the liquid (water & retarder) throughout the concrete mass. I'll do some test samples first. Have a great xmas and a safe new year to all!

@MikeDayConcrete
@MikeDayConcrete 4 года назад
For me sometimes it's faster to hand screed when there's a lot of plumbing pipes like this video. Sometimes if the floor slopes like a garage floor front to back or to a floor drain. And sometimes if it's just a small floor. These things are how we decide to hand screed or power screed.

@bellpraise
@bellpraise 4 года назад
A powered- vibrator is way faster and much better good finished quality, and costly efficient. And we don't use long 2by4 to screed off, but we use shorter one. We Korean call it DADEAGI which means stamping and screeding and leveling. We make it at the site. First, Pick up a proper length 2by4,like 1200centimeter long, get the steel bar to make the handle, at this turn, you should check the length of the 2by4 which would be the size of the handle and height of a user which would be the size between the 2by4 and your hands,at this time , the height must be located at the easiest level to shake this tool. Because you have to cut and bend the steel rod accordingly. Once you get this done, nail the bended bar on the 2by4. The steel rod shapes like the alphabet U. The hollow part will be lined by the nailed 2by4. The bottom part of 'U' which is a little bit bended would not be bended in the tool. Actually this section will be the handle you'll grab to work. Both of l.l will be the height between your waist (or hands) and the 2by4. There's more one thing I would like to add to make this tool better. If you bend a little bit the tip of the bar which will be nailed, it can prevent the bars from sliding out of the 2by4. DON'T HAVE A BACK PAIN!!!!!@@ Thank you. FYI, I have been around the site for 30 years.
