Good afternoon! This week's video is my most given feedback and critique for miniature painting! As a competition judge, youtube, commission painter and just member of the community, I get asked for a lot of advice and feedback. This week, I'm wrapping it all up into one video to help you improve your miniature painting.

As I’m painting an entire box of Zombicide 2nd Edition, I’m trying to implement variation between miniatures of the same sculpt by trying to show how or why each individual zombie was turned. Maybe the miniature is holding their stomach that I could imply they were shot, or maybe they have an exposed arm I could leverage into a bite mark. I got my craft knife out and carved out some of the plastic to look like a chunk of missing flesh. All to tell a story with each mini. #NotificationSquad

One thing I always notice with my models is that they look so much better when I go a couple of months without seeing them. I'll randomly go through my mini's and be like "woah this one is actually pretty damn good!" while I distinctly remember during the painting process thinking it looked bad or unclean/dirty.

Great video love how much time your spent talking about contrast on a mini. You explain that contrast is such a broad subject and covers so much just points out why comments like "needs more contrast" is basically useless feedback. Learning by doing is great advice! You can watch vids all day, but if you don't pick up a(n) (air)brush, you never get to put all the tip and tricks into practice. Don't fret if it's not perfect the first time. That's why they make tons of miniatures! The next one will be a new chance and a new adventure! And, if you are asked for critique, be kind; suggest, don't insist. It goes a long way to building someone up and making them better. I love what you do here and the community you're building! (Also, I love your cats, but I love all cats...)

I actually ignore a lot of highlights. Mostly because natural light already really does exactly that. Citadel loves to highlight every single part on a model. But if you want more realism, just use natural light. The highlights in the cinematics of Warhammer are only in the spots where the light touches it. I guess that's why they are called "high lights". It's a higher amount of light touching the area specifically. But if you are going for a display piece, or a sculpture where light is touching it from an angle. That would make more sense. But for my tabletop playing. I use very minimal high lighting.
@6Stevo
@6Stevo 2 года назад
I find it helpful to put the model on a table and stand back to view it. Sometimes they look great up close, but then on the table, all detail is lost. So I tend to over exaturate the highlights so they show up from that distance. Afterall, that is the distance most will see it from.

That last tip 'seeing' is what I find most necessary in almost any artform. Without it, how would you know to push contrast, push colours, or whatever needs to improve on your work? Almost all feedback I give on other peoples work boils down to them not really looking critically at their own work.

My hands aren't steady enough to do eyes, even with a holder & brace, my hands shake slightly and my eyes end up being a "blob" at best and a smear at worst... this means that I can't really do separator lines either as I end up putting a really big smear on areas I thought were "done" I know I need more practice (I've only been p[ainting a few months), but I think I've got certain things OK, my blends can ve good, but there's SOOOO much to learn!

This was a very helpful video, thanks. I do have a question though: How do you create enough contrast on more realistic miniatures (like historical or low fantasy minis)? I can totally see myself painting a bright blue Squig in contrast to the green Goblin skin but when I am trying to paint my lord of the rings models it is much more difficult
@herlocksholmes9369
@herlocksholmes9369 2 года назад
I also think it is difficult to create more contrast when using a more realistic colour scheme. Usually, my realstic models look great when they are close to my eyes, but most of the contrast dissappears when seen from, say, three feet away. Maybe the solution would be if we studied some pictures of realistically painted models which have a level of both realism and contrast that we like and then try and replicate that look. I think I will practice it on some "test minis" that are not going to be part of an army. That way one could try out different techniques without worrying if it is too much.

Great video as always. Just one comment on matt over gloss varnish: Have you tried experimenting with semi-gloss or semi-matt finishes? This is used in scale modeling a lot and I believe it can be applied to figures as well (I'm a scale modeller and not a figure painter, so I might be shooting blanks here...). Keep up the great work - I look forward to it despite not being a figure painter. Yet... :)

Baaah, this topic came up in your video 3 seconds after I posted this :D
@tomstone6268
@tomstone6268 3 года назад
There are elements where a gloss is nice, like eyes or slime or guts. Matte usually works best in the majority of figure cases just because so much of a figure is not glossy or you've painted in the shine as a highlight and gloss would change it. I haven't used semi-gloss, but now I'm curious about it for armor bits. Interesting suggestion!

Interesting and insightful video, only one thing: the notion of "more contrast" - while certainly not wrong - is highly overused and had nearly become a meme more than a feedback. As said, it isn't too be labelled as wrong in general, but often "more contrast" isn't the best answer, especially with the advent of a more texture and material focused painting trend, where as often it not more often, less contrast or far more diverse usage of contrast is adequate. More contrast originated in the '00er and very early' 10er years with a more stylised, cartoonish way of painting and far to often leads to something that reads as an overall grey rather than a structured model. And I certainly am guilty of this as well

as much as i love your videos i do always end up feeling unmotivated to paint for a good while after seeing the stunning stuff you paint. knowing i simply lack the dedication to come anywhere close. since i mostly paint armies so the attention to detail will simply not work for my goals. but at least i learn something new each video i can implement on a smaller scale.

I'm going to jump in and offer the following: 'embrace the process' rather than being focused on a specific goal - or comparing yourself to someone else - chances are that you will surprise yourself from time to time at how much you have progressed along the way. While super attention to detail on armies isn't really practical - look at each technique and see if one can be replicated on a batch painting style and then every once in a while take the time on a model (leaders, specialists, characters)

I collect space ship models, Star Trek and what not. Wanted to adjust the paint job on them, so looked up model paints, then found this whole universe of model painting I had no idea about. Where would I go about trying to learn about it, at the most basic level? Are the models most often collected just as a hobby (like my ships) or is it part of a dungeons n dragons type game (which I also don't know much about)? Also, is making the models by oneself something people do?

RU-vid and maybe a how to learn reaper kit (there are others but reaper is definitely more budget friendly overall) for learning on how to paint but don't feel the need to follow everyone's advice, try out a few different ways and go with what works for you only hard and fast rule is thin your paints and even then depending on the paint can be optional (reaper paints I've found to be pretty thin as is ). As far as mini painting goes it's definitely a hobby all buy itself but definitely goes hand in hand with tabletop gaming (dnd or wargaming like Warhammer ) as that's why most people pick it up and what most minis are made for though it's not needed if you have no interest in playing them just be aware that it can affect the price when it comes to ones made for wargaming as it's more the cost of the mini or unit in the game rather than production cost that set the price tag. Most people don't make their own models but some do if they have the talent for sculpting though with 3d printing on the rise it's slightly less rare as it's easier to sculpt in a 3d program and then print and the added bonus of selling the stl file with little to no out of pocket production cost (the buyer is paying the production cost themselves) means more people are doing so. However while sculpting a model from nothing is rare modding a model with parts from other models or just sculpting add ones or changes with milliput is very common. It can be a very expansive hobby as a heads up. Paint, Brushes. Even models add up, go the cheap route and you can find them for around 5 bucks but still you end up buying 10 or 20 of them at a time. (Most people who paint minis have way more unpainted then they ever will have painted, alot of oh these look they would be fun to paint but then maybe get one done before others catch your eye and you pick up the new ones and start painting some of them and repeat even the whole I'll pick these up but I won't start till I finish the ones I'm on didn't help as you see some new ones before you get to the ones you just bought and end up buying more skipping some saying I'll get to them after these new new ones and repeat lol) Anything else just ask
