I've been tapped to provide some CGI to an upcoming real-time documentary by RU-vidr jpod07. This is a semi real-time re-enactment of the flooding of Titanic's Orlop Mail Hold and G-deck Mail Room. All visuals are WIP and not final.

This is just amazing to me. But one thing I want to know, how do you prevent the water clipping through walls? In a lot of simulations, the water line clips through everything, so any model that has interior has the interior flooding as the exterior sinks; how would you fix that?

@dean1039 4 года назад
Imagine the sense of dread the crew would have felt seeing the mail room almost completely under water a mere ten minutes after the collision. I believe that was the point many realised it would be a very arduous and painful night.
@Nyctasia
@Nyctasia 4 года назад
Look at the launching of the lifeboats. When consideration is taken for how long it took to get each boat launched and safely away, you see that the crew performed very well, as with the equipment of the time (hand launching) even if there had been more boats there would have been no time to launch them anyhow. Titanic is one of the very few non-warships that sank on an even keel, no heavy list to one side or the other that prevents launching boats from that side (see the Costa Concordia) so it is pretty clear the crew did all they could, especially the engineers that managed to keep the power running, as working in total darkness would have cost far more lives.

Out of curiosity, where does the water come from? Was it one of the areas damaged by the iceberg or did the water went in through gaps/ventilation, etc..? In an animation it's simple because water essentially a plane that passes through everything but what about real life? I have a serious interest in the fluid dynamics of the flooding
@foxymetroid
@foxymetroid 4 года назад
The water would come from the gap in the hull created by the ice burg. The mail room would be in the front of the ship, so water would come from the flooding halls if the mail room didn't extend to the side of the ship.
@areoborg
@areoborg 4 года назад
The water would have come in from the iceberg damage. The lower level was located below the waterline and along the outer Hull and was probably one of the only occupied parts of the ship that ended up getting directly exposed to the sea, since the other areas were for cargo.
@rebelndirt8830
@rebelndirt8830 4 года назад
The mail hold was not on the same level as was breached but one level above and there were crew quarters around it. The water would have entered the main hold and then the crew quarters before the mail room, but the mail room was easy to access from topside as well as giving access to the main hold through a door. It only took about 10 minutes or so for the main hold, crew quarters and the mail hold to flood.

This is true. You can have water physics but at the cost of time. It takes exponentially more time to do actual physics. The mail room vid rendered off at about 4 seconds a frame. With physics it'd probably be over a minute per frame. That's why movies take a long time to make. Good CGI takes time to render

To Titanic Animations, Thank you so much for jumping on board with my project. You have been such a tremendous help. I truly appreciate you taking the time to create this for my upcoming documentary. There are a few scenes that I required visual assistance, as the model I am using is limited to its interior. Thank you again! To everyone, My upcoming documentary miniseries will be released sometime during 2021-2022. I am currently writing the scripts for the individual episodes, and I’m waiting for the new 3.0 model to be released by the Roblox team. Originally it was planned to be 45 minutes, 60 minutes and 90 minutes. However, I realised that retelling the story of the Titanic isn’t a simple task. There were over 2,208 passengers and crew on board, and each individual had a story, or played a significant role that night. Finally, I made the decision to split my documentary into four episodes, with each episode focusing on the individual hour of the sinking. I did plan to have a real-time format, but that was ultimately scrapped. Why? It has already been done. Titanic: Honor and Glory made one. Titanic Animations made one. There would be no point to do another. The individual scripts have been written in real-time, but certain timestamps will be shown to give the viewer an idea of what happened at point A, or in between point A and point B. The removal of the real-time format will give individual scenes enough time to shine, and to transition smoothly. My goal is to retell the disaster by focusing on the passengers and crew. After all, the human drama is what made the sinking of the Titanic famous. I plan to tell as many stories that I can, and hope educate viewers about those who were aboard. Most of the well-known and lesser-known passengers and crew will be mentioned throughout each episode. Some will be mentioned once, twice, or a few times. There is a lot of historical ground to be covered, so a lot of research and patience is required. I’m currently working with several historians, and Titanic Animations to ensure the timeline is accurate, or approximately accurate, and that every scene depicted is accurate. Unfortunately, my computer does not have the system requirements to build a model, nor do I have the knowledge to even build one. However, I will be using the model on Roblox, which was created by TheAmazeman and Inyo22. A big shout out to the team for supporting my project. I’m looking forward to sharing my work with everyone. I hope this documentary will give the general viewer a better insight to the night of the disaster. Thank you.

Impressive animation, and don't worry to much about the inconclusive source of the water as the damage to A compartment was very slight and probably behind the mailroom walls. The water pressure forced the water in quickly. Before you finish, you might want to add the detail that mailbags were seen floating in the lower level and would therefore be floating on the rising water until the nail area was completely filled. There would have been a mailbag at each sitting station. As another commenter said, clerks were seen trying to save soom of the mail until it was too late.
