It’s admirable how even with the crumbs the writers give her, Anna is still killing it with her role. She’s really talented, it’s a shame they don’t appreciate it.
Boom! You hit the nail on the head! Anna is such an amazing actress and I feel like she does an amazing job at fully embodying Starfire, but her character in the show was written so poorly. And what’s worse is that the writers / showrunners know that their predominantly black fans tune in solely for Kory and Dickkory so what do they do? They string us along, season after season claiming it’ll finally be hers, only to disappoint again. Its a mess.

I only watched the first season of Titans, and when I heard that s2 sidelined Kory, scrapped DickKory, gave us unnecessary flashbacks between Dick and Dawn, and didn't give Gar a storyline, I decided not to watch it. It's honestly a shame. Anna Diop is so talented, and this show treats her like she's nothing.
It’s makes it more frustrating that they were teasing and hyping up this season as the Blackfire saga but instead they ended up doing the Under the Red Hood saga. Instead of giving us an actual titans story/arc, we instead got a Batman story/arc in a titans show
and then they bring in Barbara Gordon to moan and complain just to drive home the idea that "Bruce sucks" oh my god... we get it... we've gotten it since season 1... the entire season just became another Gotham show. the Scarecrow/Red Hood arc died 5 episodes in, they didn't know what they were doing with Blackfire... they constantly disrespect characters on this show

every damn season they tease how Kory is gonna be the badass alien warrior princess we know she can be then they do nothing but shit on her character and turn her into a door mat. because season one Kory wouldn't let ANY of them talk to her the way they did this season and also, the Blackfire vs Starfire was just- ugh- IM MAD ON ANNA'S PART BECAUSE FOR FUCKS SAKE! I'm not even gonna get into it about Iris. Only DCTV black lead not being disrespected is Ryan on Batwoman but otherwise all the black actresses gotta fight for something as simple as having people on set who can do black hair and make up. Candice has had to PAY FOR HERSELF each season and the damn show won't even reimburse her. I think she's the one who said studios hire black actors and then don't follow through, costuming, hair and make up, online support against racially charged bullying, storylines and such for them. truly at the moment only the Batwoman show and social media have Javicia's back this season, hateful comments are taken down, they cheer her on, write good stories for her and the other POC two of which are a black man and woman and the other an Asian woman. Candice and Anna don't have this and its so sad considering they've been on DCTV for longer and Candice started the hiring of black women in typically white and redheaded trend. if it wasn't for Anna and Candice I'd be GONE from each show. Westallen and Iris are keeping on that hell show and seeing how much each actress has been through I gotta stay for them. Always fighting 'fans' in the twitter comments, the insta comments, on RU-vid, if ***I*** am tired, I can't imagine how they feel
To be fair, the Titans writers fail every character. Even the ones they like, like Dick and Jason. But it is very true this writing has always been a disservice to Kory and Anna who plays her.
Girl I agree. Love your takes. They straight up ruined blackfire and kori's rivalry. They did nothing with it, absolutely nothing. Every season is about Dick's recycled storyline which never gets better. They gave Donna one whole episode but Kori gets nothing.
The actors of Dick and Kory have so much chemistry together that I'm scared to say this but if this keeps going the same way, the show will be cancelled. Since the 1 season their pairing was the only thing I really cared about.
Exactly! They knew what they were doing they put them together in order to keep fans watching to get renewed for another season! The way they flirted and got together in season 1 to acting like that NEVER happened is frustrating! Nah fr and they constantly kept on advertising it as a Kori vs Blackfire major storyline but instead they did an Under the Red Hood storyline, terribly by the way. The dragged us in, and then lied to us. They kept on doing non Titans storylines and Kori deserves better as a character and Anna Diop deserves so much more respect
As a new DC fan, I agree. The show’s too centered around Dick. Honestly, Dick is an uninteresting loner who assembles the Titans occasionally. Red Hood/Scarecrow storyline got boring and made Jason irredeemable in my eyes. The Titans don’t move as a unit and are constantly changing members. Hopefully, they’ll move as a unit in season four. I love your recommendation for the writers to establish what they won’t tolerate in the comments. Idk if they don’t care or if they’re afraid they’ll lose viewership. Either way it’s fucked up.
At the rate these writers are going it's not surprising if they loose viewership. Season 3 was a hot mess. All the characters are written rather horribly and the main character isn't even likable at this point.
I agree with everything you’ve said in this video. Word for word. Point for point. If a white woman played Kory, she would have been at the forefront from day one. I don’t know if it’s worth it anymore for Black women to take on these roles. Doesn’t mean I don’t want to see it but I’m tired. Emotionally tired. I feel the need to defend Kory and Anna but it gets to be too much. From the ire of the fandom to the way the writers write them is appalling. I didn’t even finish s3. And don’t even know if I want to. Or even watch s4. I want to support Anna but it’s so hard though with this terrible show. Oh, and I was so looking forward to a battle physical and emotional between Kory and Kom. We got that small fight in that underground bunker but that was it. I wanted arguing and disbelief and major powers used between them. All we got was Red Hood. 😒 And I wanted so much more for Kory. A main character. An iconic character. And don’t get me started on Dickkory. And yes, expect disappointment. I agree! 🤷🏾♀️
Agreed. I heard that season 3 was gonna center around Kori/backfire and I was really hoping for that. All we got is redhood and that wasn't good either. This show never fails to disappoint.
I'm a marvel fan when it comes to live action but I love what they've done with zendaya playing mj and Tony Revolori as flash. I'm scared to watch titans because I just keep hearing the writing isn't there. I dont think race binding is the issue...writing is. If a character like dick Grayson is barely likable and so drastic from the comics then kori being race bent with these kinds of writers is a nail I'm the coffin almost no matter how well the actors and actresses are. I see the actress giving effort, the writing on the other hand...leaves A LOT to he desired to be nice looking outside in
you literally said everything that fans since day one have been saying about the show. i feel like the writers/showrunners know exactly what we want but they just have no passion for it and it’s highly upsetting. how are you gonna have a TITANS show and not write about the titans. I definitely don’t know what they think about viewership but i do think batfam fans aren’t tuning into the show because they like it. the titans feel like side characters especially kory and gar too often. They wrote Crane and Jason to basically amount to nothing at the end of the season and have WAY too many scenes were it didn’t elevate the plot or development in any way. I really want s4 to have a stable writers room and new showrunners where you have everyone passionate for the characters that are already on the screen especially the core four cause we don’t need any more new characters when we can barely get enough development for anyone else other than dick. Kory definitely needs to also not be nerfed every season too.

I’m kind of tired of Titans. It’s almost 4 seasons in and it hasn’t been able to get it right. Not sure it ever will. Missing last season and now no gem 😩

Gar in the comics first transformation was a moneky, and he always changes into a silverback ape when he needs strength, so I think they shoulda went with a silverback gorilla instead of the tiger, also my favorite transformation.
Was the actor that played toddler koriand’r the same as mari? I hated the barbara stuff such a waste of time, it was dawn flash back 2. Worst. There could have been more Kori and Kom flash backs instead. I enjoyed the red hood storyline because Jason Todd is my favorite robins in DC, he’s such a little twat but his story is interesting. Greysons whole I don’t want to be robin im not bruce but am is annoying. He is better with Kori so let just get to that and leave his past in the past.

Cause there was certainly a photo of the actress that was supposed to play her wearing it that was going around while the show was being filmed. I’ll be so mad if they cut those scenes!!!

i wouldnt mind a black starfire, since orange skin would be difficult to maintain episode to episode, so black kind of works in that regard, but poor writting ruins it
Us seeing her and dick being an actual couple and having a child, what we saw as far as dick seeing his daughter it will never actual play out for our eyes to see. Now if it does I will love it and take back my opinion yet I dont think it will.
We need someone to pick up the story of starfire and make movies about her. her background story is even more so interesting then superman and wonderwoman. They downplay starfire even till this day. She should be matching the likes of Diana and superman in a sense. She should've also been part of the justice league appose to Cyborg. They fail her so much that its tiring.

I'm sure you'll probably delete this comment, but I'll say my peace as a black man. Gigantic false equivalence. No one's asking for 100 percent comic accuracy, otherwise they'd just read the book. We want something in the ball park of the comic character. Kory looks nothing like Starfire, acts nothing like Starfire, her power's aren't even similar to Starfire's. What's Starfire about her? Nothing, and that's the problem. She's a really good actor and all and if she was panited orange and directed well she'd be beloved by most of the fandom. As for all those other characters you listed off, they are extremely similar to thier comic counter parts, they fill off just about every tick for the characters I can think of to the point even the most casual fans can tell who they are just by a simple glance. You can't do that with this "Starfire" because she just isn't Starfire.
I don't think race bending a character leads them to being misused. I think they were misused the moment they were race bent. The issue with deviating from the source material is that if you go to far you destroy the very essence of the character. While some deviating is necessary, if you make the characters unrecognizable they become someone else. This can become problematic for fan favorite characters. What you end up with is just a bunch of OCs. And that leads to the question of why bother using this IP in the first place if you just made a bunch of OCs with DC skins? You could have just made an original show with original heroes. If the only thing they changed about starfire was her skin color that would be forgivable. But nobody in the titans act like their dc counterparts. They don't even act like heroes. So what you're left with is just a badly written show with unrecognizable characters, unlikable characters, and a laughable plot. Race swapping and tokenization are really just a small part of the problem. And those could easily be overlooked if the characters were written like how they are supposed to be.
