In the small town of Chardin, Ohio, there was a growing evil. That was TJ Lane, a teenage boy who would one day join the worst of the worst. By why? That's the question, because at sentencing he acted even more vile. And then he escaped prison...

To this day, I'm pretty sure my dad stopped a school shooter before he could enact what he was going to do. My dad was a teacher, and this kid had been acting weird for a couple days, and my dad pulled him into his classroom. He sat with the kid and offered to help with his homework and just talked to the kid. I even spoke to him when I was there to help my dad move something. The kid told my dad about things happening in his house, and that he had no outlet, but talking to my dad helped. After he graduated, he walked up to my dad and told him that he'd been planning to do something horrible, but that my dad bringing him into his classroom every day helped him. Last I heard, dude was running his own landscaping business.

Also, I'm assuming in his pigeon hall of a cell he doesnt have internet access. (Sarcasm, you get me.) I've never heard of this case or his name before. I think cases should be referred to by the victims name.. i.e "The Heartless Killer of _______" instead of videos typically being titled with the monsters name. HOWEVER when it comes to RU-vidrs trying to be successful in what they do, I guess cases that involve more than three victims would end up being pretty wordy! Even if the POS is deceased or in prison at time of video being put up and would not personally see it- still rubs me the wrong way!

This happened in my hometown, it’s where I grew up and most of my family still live and work. I was not surprised when this happened… the high school is very “cliquey” and people who are a bit off, different, etc are treated horribly by the students and the faculty too. The bullying is out of control. I have too many stories about it… but that’s definitely not an excuse for TJ, if he was experiencing that kind of treatment, which I haven’t heard. For the most part, the teachers are pretty great and there’s plenty of opportunities to thrive and learn; the art teachers were always my favorite. The town of Chardon is a great little place and I love going home to visit. This incident really tore the town up but also brought people closer together. Everybody knows each other, and although it’s grown into a busy little city, it still has the small town feel. The incident is really sad, overall and it changed Chardon and Geauga County forever (It’s pronounced Gee-aww-guh, by the way). Thanks for covering it- you did a great job and did Chardonites proud. 😇

I honestly really feel for any kid who doesn't fit in within these smaller towns, of course nothing excuses a horrific act like this. I feel like in some of these horrid stories, you at least feel a tiny ounce of pity seeing how life screwed these evil kids over, but when he was given a chance at genuine friendship with the very people he took out, he definitely deserves no remorse. I *wish* I had a group of nice guys attempt to include me in their day and be my friend. It's so upsetting. Some just don't want help and don't want to contribute anything good to the world.

Have I got that right? You're on here _pridefully boasting_ that you're a lawbreaker and a selfish arsehole, too. Have I got that right? It would've been so ironic had your brother survived but you'd died from driving like _an outright complete idiot,_ or that you'd ended up in prison for vehicular manslaughter. My cousin had just graduated and knew the kids who were shot. Funerals were attended. It was very sad as it would be. There are still Hilltopper Strong signs all over. Most of my family lives in Chardon, in the Village, Aquila where one of the boys were from. It's a very snowy place. They get feet of snow when we, further north, would get inches. It's a more expensive place to live. Crazy something like this would happen there. If it can happen here it can happen anywhere. And obviously he did not care. 😞

Showing the killers for the pathetic little shites they are. Sticking to the facts. I had a teacher once tell me: "Be careful how you perceive the world, it is that way." It's something that has stuck with me for years. I wonder if even though "bullying" was never confirmed by anyone else, TJ may have perceived it himself. I'm obviously not defending what happened in any way, but sometimes these things make me think about what must have been going through someone's head when they just start shooting.

I think it's certainly worth understanding, and "empathizing" with young people who do terrible things like this for the sake of prevention. I put empathizing in quotes because I can't think of another word for what I mean. I guess putting yourself in their skin as much as that is possible, and attempting to learn their motives so that you can spot others that are having similar feelings and distorted destructive views of reality. I really don't think it's constructive to shrug and say "well he was just an evil bastard", and go on with life, being shocked all over again when another angry young man gets ahold of a gun and takes revenge on the world. That quote you gave is really good. I look back at my own life, and I remember how incredibly varied my perception of reality has been at different times. Usually I've grown in or out of them with the passage of time, and some are very disturbing to recall and were certainly overly cynical and distorted. I wonder if I had a friend or mentor at the time that could pick up on them, if they could have explained people to me in a way that would have saved me a lot of unnecessary sideways paths. At least I hope that is possible for some of these young people.

I bet that the bullying would have been confirmed, if anyone had bothered to ask. I suspect no one dug too deep, because they wouldn't want people sympathizing with TJ. But, I will say this, as a repeat of what I wrote above in my own comment: While he *somewhat* fits the profile of 'troubled loner', which seems prevalent with school shooters, one of the girls interviewed (and shown here) did speak positively about him, so he clearly wasn't Completely without friends. Also, and I think this is the most telling thing: Unlike the vast majority of school shooters who simply start shooting at random (either in their own class rooms or going into another) TJ specifically went up to the specific kids who were 'rumored' to be bullying him. It was by no means random, but entirely deliberate on his part. If he simply 'wanted to kill', he could've shot literally Anyone in the cafeteria, and got the kill he wanted. But he didn't. He went up to the people specifically rumored to have been bullying him. To me, that suggests that they were (or he at least had some other kind of beef with them specifically, to specifically shoot Them, rather than simply shooting whoever was nearest to him... 🤷‍♂🤷‍♂🤷‍♂🤷‍♂ That's not intented as a justification, but an observation...
@somethingelse4424
@somethingelse4424 2 года назад
@@TimParker-Chambers Yes, and I don't recall if anyone at that lunch table survived, but I imagine they would be hesitant to honestly say whether anyone in the group had bullied him. And based on his behavior in court, he seems to have greatly disliked his victims. And this is observation, not justification on my part as well. Of course nothing justifies what he did.

When people are asked about the history of a killer and you hear, "No one thought he was capable of such a thing"; as a teacher, I swear there are kids that teachers can spot as future-problems. I have a couple that if they were accused of a violent crime and I was asked I could honestly say, "I am not at all surprised." I have reported the aberrant behavior on multiple occasions. Sadly, I feel like there aren't enough adequate professional people in the school systems to intervene in these types of cases.

I truly hate when people fake mental illness and abuse after doing horrific things like this. This is what makes people scared of those of us who have mental illness or a history of abuse. It makes people think that we are violent, unstable and volatile by nature and makes people far less likely to seek help when they need it emotionally due to the stigma. I have c-ptsd from surviving kidnapping, rape and attempted murder along with going through 2 years of testifying in court after my attacker plead not guilty. I already had severe depression and anxiety before that day. Coincidentally, my attack occurred 6 weeks after the Chardon high school shooting. I was living in an apartment building just for students that housed roughly 400 people. I was absolutely shunned after people started gossiping about my attack. Management of the building actually let the details of my attack be known to their employees who told residents. After TJ Lane said that he was the victim of abuse and heard voices, people started assuming that I would too after what had happened to me. I spent the next 3 years living in that building and for most of it, people spoke about me within earshot with absolutely no shame. Every new resident would be warned not to associate with me because I was ‘crazy’. Bearing in mind, the only reason anyone had to call me crazy was because someone had kidnapped, raped and tried to kill me. I studied full time and got my degree while working 30 hours a week at a job I loved to keep busy. Monsters like TJ Lane prevent people like the girl I was from reporting what happened to them. They turn abuse and mental illness into something that others fear.
