The Bizarre Case of Nancy Brophy 

I used to work with him. He was a great guy. I remember mushroom hunting with him and a student would ask is this mushroom edible. He said every mushroom is edible once. Thank you for this video. I miss him. He's someone I'll never forget.

I'm only in a couple a minutes, but I wanted to say that when I was a 13 to 17 year old street kid in Portland, the culinary school would feed as many kids as they could breakfast out the back door. A lot of times it would be the only hot meal you'd get. That was back in the late eighties and now a couple a days after my fiftieth birthday I'm sad to hear that covid killed it. At a time when no one seemed to care and good memories were few and far in between, I could look for a smile and a caring word from those folks plus a good meal. They instilled in me the realization that even now I don't have much, but those who have nothing still deserve a hot meal and kindness without judgement.

I have been an aspiring writer my whole life but never felt it was good enough to get published. Nancy gives me hope that even I can publish books. Thanks for inspiring me with her dribble.

I've noticed that every video about Daniel Brophy has comments from former students or friends, talking about what a great teacher and friend he was, and how much they miss him. It really speaks volumes to the kind of person he was. His wife, on the other hand, clearly couldn't handle being such a mediocre person with a failing writing career, a shopping addiction, and a dull life (as she saw it.) Instead of being thankful for having a husband like Daniel, she killed him in order to have a more exciting life. I think she wanted the attention and sympathy, and was jealous of Daniel's achievements. She couldn't face up to how mediocre she was. She was a failed writer and blew through their savings, and was too much of a coward to take responsibility for what she had done. Absolutely pathetic. Rest in Peace, Daniel. You deserved so much better ❤️

“Her books were the equivalent of visual water boarding”. I’m dying.

I've been "writing" a book for over a decade now. A whole lot of my procrastination is "It's just not good enough". If this woman could publish that many books when they are written THAT badly....I think I'll be ok.

The Freudian slip, "defend myself from the truth" is classic. The cackle, then condescending "sorry" while on the stand is just mind boggling. She truly thought she could outwit the world. Why not divorce him and get half, like most greedy narcissistic spouses would opt for?

As a former cashier, the "boob sweat covered debit card" is the most horrifying thing about this story. It gave me flashbacks of being handed soggy bills that were fished out of wet bras. Not as bad as the time a guy reached down the front of his shorts, into his undies, pulled out a bill, and handed it to me.

She literally said, “I don’t even know how to defend myself against the truth.” 🤯

There was a video from Dreading on this case about a month ago, and the comments were filled with Dan's students. You can feel the impact that Dan had on his students and the people around him. Nancy didn't deserve such a kind hearted person to be her husband, and she killed him for no reason.

One thing you learn from ThatChapter is that if you light up a room, are inspirational or if you're well liked in the community, you WILL be murdered by an idiot.

RIP Dan. He really look like a well respected dude and sounds like a really good husband but only for a wrong woman.

When you're husband has just been murdered and your first statement is, "I don't care about who shot him" and then you ask the police to write a letter saying you definitely didn't do it, you certainly are not doing yourself any favors toward looking particularly innocent....

She can write more books now, "The Wrong Corrections Officer"or "The Wrong Cell Mate". Or maybe she'll write the "Right" series, who knows. All I know is she's right where she belongs.

I've put off giving this one a goo for a couple of weeks simply because I live here in Portland and we were completely Brophy overloaded! I'm glad you did this one Mike because Chef was a wonderful human who deserved so much better than Nancy.

This lady has a serious case of thinking she's smarter than everyone else, and she doesn't understand how comically obvious it is to everyone that she's not.

It's creepy to think that Dan was in a relationship with this fraud for years who ended up being a person who would just kill him over money without a care. How many years was she pretending to care about him? Dan probably slowly learned over time that she wasn't what she portrayed on the outside, except he probably never expected her to be this evil. How sad that these people are out there!

I love how the reason she thinks murder is hard is bc of the mess on the wall, not morals or conscience

When I first heard about this, I remember thinking about how Nancy really hit the jackpot. She had a kind, goofy, good cook as a husband who supported her crappy writing up to the point she started going hog wild and she really threw all that away. He deserved so much more.

I simply can't believe you subjected yourself to all of that horrible writing, just for the sake of your show. That is integrity and dedication, to the max!

I love how she states she wouldn't have a card or anything else because she couldn't store it on her but she'd have cash. Where was she storing the cash? 🤣

I just don’t understand how that is second degree murder. Pretty premeditated to me. You drove to the mans job and killed him in cold blood. In his happy place no less. This lady literally just SCREAMS "I am guilty!" from just "showing up" to the crime scene without being called by anyone, to 3 days after the murder wanting a letter for the insurance company to release her 💰. Like police don't know any better!🙄 It's the dumb criminals thinking they're smarter than everyone else that get caught!!🤦🏾‍♀️

It’s been a year since this episode came out and I’m still laughing.

The word "gross" rolling across the screen made me lol.

Watching her start to contradict herself on the stand and then look at her lawyers all worried was the most satisfying part of her trial. Besides the verdict. She really did think she'd get away with it.

I would pay an unreasonable amount of money to have heard you read the books out loud and make verbal real-time reactions to it all.

I love how everyone In the court trial has insanely good hair. I mean look at the judge, they legit pulled a navy seal from her book.

My search history is sketchy too because I look up all kinds of things in research when I see something I don't know about.

As much as Mike states how bad her books are, I think he's still overselling them. They are truly godawful. The two I tried to read were The Room in literary form.

Please please please, for the love of all things holy and righteous, continue letting your personality shine through your work and letting your creative side do its thing. I absolutely adore the little things that lighten the mood of the case and make these horrific events more palatable. I love true crime but I have a special place in my heart for the way you present things. I’ll admit that a few years ago I watched a video and for whatever reason it didn’t really knock my socks off, but later I gave it a second try and it’s really your personality and YOU that makes these videos so good. I know these parasocial interactions are strange, as the viewer/audience feels a sense of “knowing” creators who have literally never even heard of them, but in this day and age where isolation is more prevalent than ever, your charm can brighten my day, and that little bit at the end where you tell people to take care of themselves and others, “because I love ya” can be the only time someone hears something like that in their day to day life, and it’s very comforting and heartwarming. Thanks for what you do, you’re great at it, and you’re appreciated. I hope you take your own advice and also make sure to take care of yourself Mike, because I love ya.

I sat through her ENTIRE testimony at her trial. She couldn't have been more unlikeable if she tried. It was hilarious, definitely worth a watch!

It's like those Harlequin books your mom used to read in 1999. "His above average member, clearly visible in his linnen underwear... She buckled under his soothing pressence and willingly gave herself to him." We used to laugh so hard at the dinner table, quoting sentences. Mom with an embarrased smirk on her face. :'D But we also found out that those stories arent written by actual people. They are composed according to an algorythm. It's pretty much compiled by a computer. That's how they are able to publish 50 new books a month. And why they cost 3 dollars. You must be a crappy writter if you try to copy that.

Who would've thought that watching crime could be so entertaining? You use your humour fantastically , without loosing the grip of the seriousness of the crime .......Love the feeling when whilst watching the video , I realize Insurance is the motive...makes me laugh really bad as I know the music is coming and so your hilarious comments ! I watched her trial. She was so full of herself, it's incredible! She was patronizing, arrogant, and she talked as if everybody was just there to marvel in her stories. I loved the point where she realized she completely destroyed her story with the discrepancies about how she researched a topic for her book, while at the same time knowing nothing about it in order to fake incompetence.

How the hell do these things happen at a COLLEGE? Especially On the west coast you would think they'd have cameras absolutely everywhere... makes no sense it wouldn't be caught on camera.

I'm really impressed with this episode. I knew Dan Brophy, and I've watched a lot of true crime channels cover this case. You did the best I've seen so far. The footage that you used of the school is unique, and it really helps set the scene. You also really captured Dan's personality. I've seen too many channels pull the "he was so kind he was so beloved gone too soon TOO SOON" routine. Yes, he could be very kind. He was also a grumpy old goblin man, and that's a huge part of why people loved him, thank you for making that clear. There's another thing going on here that I really admire, and I didn't realize it was missing from the other productions I saw on this case. This blew up because she wrote mystery books, and I haven't seen anyone else cover her books. WOW they are bad. I kept pausing to read what you put up, and there was a paragraph I had to read three times before I could start to interpret it. That's just been missing from all of the videos I've seen on Dan and Nancy. Can you imagine loving someone enough to read that and tell them it's good? It makes the betrayal sting that much worse. Edit: Nancy is super lucky. In Oregon, we tend to clothe lady prisoners in sort of hospital scrubs in a drab denim blue. No orange jumpsuit for you, Nan!

It's funny how you can nearly always tell whether a person's guilty or not by their first police call. And it's clear as day that Nancy Brophy's guilty by the way she's talking "I don't care who shot him cos it's not gonna bring him back, I just want him back". Firstly, an innocent person would care who shot their husband, and secondly, she's just too damn talkative... Guilty guilty guilty!!!

I’ve seen a lot of videos about Dan. His students loved him and described him as having a very dry sense of humor. He seemed like a very cool guy. How Dan married such a narcissist is beyond me. Listening to that woman actually makes me mad! I’m mad for Dan’s family, his students and anybody that had the honor of knowing him. She is right where she belongs!

I spent my career as a police officer, and the thing we looked forward to the most were criminals who were both arrogant and stupid. Nancy certainly fits that description. Thanks for the videos, Mike.
