The 3rd review is in progress (a certain fandub collab I'm doing takes priority first tough). Also, an Omnibus for A la Mode will be released this November, so you can get the complete collection of their version soon. TokyoPop is out of business, so they won't be getting any money off any of their old books and it's near impossible to buy new copies of their translation.
@1PuddingRing1 So far the first 2 omnibus books(volumes 1-4) are out. I'll be posting a review for the 2nd one in about a couple of weeks. The 3rd omnibus(which will have volumes 5-7) will be out in April.
@soyoyotokyo Metamorphosis was a mistake. The Japanese say Me-ta-mo-ro-fo-se, which is their way of saying Metamorphose(pronounced Me-tah-mor-fohs). Honobono's fansubs made the same mistake as well. Also Metamorphosis is a noun. Since they are doing the action, they have to say the verb, which is Metamorphose. TokyoPop fixed that mistake, along with Chimera Anima, when doing A la Mode. I didn't cover this in this video since Kodansha's releases haven't gotten that far yet.

@Gxmwp Gateau du Roi is an character that only appears in the Playstation RPG game, just like Mew Ringo. They were both designed by Mia Ikumi herself so they're canon characters.
Did you not hear what I said. Kisshu is the way the Japanese spell the English word Quiche (because they don't have Qs and ch's only make "cha" sounds). It was only spelled as Kish in the manga so people would know how to pronounce it right. Kisshu, Pai and Taruto were just the fandubbers way of being too lazy to properly translate their names. I even showed visual proof of his name (type in his name in Japanese and the pictures that come up is the food). It's the same for Pie and Tart.
Once again well done ^0^ And I agree that the Kodansha one sounds more mature than the tokyopop one. I like the kodansha one. I laughed at the kodansha translation when u should how much Minto was getting paid to work. Also the Kish one sounds more mature in the kodansha "HMM so many choices" I also think the reason they changed quiche to kish is so there are no problems to pronounce his name as u say too. This is my opinion I acually like the name Kish. As long as it sounds the same like quiche
@ruukux3 Actually, I think that Pudding will be on the back cover of the 2nd omnibus since Lettuce will be on the front. I'm not sure about the 3rd omnibus since it'll have volumes 5-7 in it.
What program do you use for typing Japanese text into something? (I laughed so hard at the whole kish/quiche bit XD) Also, you can keep the original Tokyopop version and sell it later on since it's the original XD And the "GET IT NOW" thing scared the living crap outta me ._.
Great review, HikaYagami! At least we should be more glad that no English translation for TMM used the dub names from the anime. But honestly, I'm one that likes the name "Kish" for "Quiche"... maybe because it doesn't sound as delish as the original name.. yet just as alien too. I dunno. Either way, I may have to get this new set to join my old TP version~
I'm not too sure since I haven't been able to read the 3rd one. It's an English translation that was released in Singapore and it's really hard to find. And even if you did, it most likely wouldn't ship overseas. So I'd stick with the omnibus.
@ruukux3 Yeah, they're not really up to date with Mew Mew on their site XD. I'm not sure about the release for A la Mode since they haven't mentioned it yet but I'm sure they have rights to it and are just not saying a release date yet.
Question! In the Tokyopop editions, Ichigo (and other characters) use insults like "geek" and "witch". How are those sequences translated in the Kodansha versions?
No, it was in the Kodansha version. They said that Reiko Yoshida was involved with Digital Monsters. While this might be accurate to the Japanese version of those extras, I think it would've been better just to put Digimon since most kids would know it better by that.
I just got the 3rd, so I can finally answer your question XD. Unfortunately, the manga (both Japanese and English) don't have any more info on the animals the girls are bonded with but there are plenty of online sites that have information.
I am definitely going to buy the Kodansha version. I really do love Tokyo Mew Mew and I thought the Tokyo Pop version was a little... awkward, to say the least. Also, I will never unsee the resemblance of the main editor and... Oh god. *shakes head*
Okay, so I want to know, for a better translation, which of the three is better? (If you hadn't mentioned a third translation a while back I'd just stick with the omnibus).
@LegendofZeldaGirl13 But that's not much of a difference. Nya means Meow in the first place so keeping as Nya instead would be kind of redundant since it's the same thing.
@conniepuce Kodansha would be a better translation and a better transition since you read the French ones since they at least kept some of the original quirks(like keeping certain characters on a last name basis and such), plus Kodansha's are cheaper(2 manga for the price of one TokyoPop version).
Isn't the story different in Omibus? I don't remember the first chapter with all the mews meeting up in Tokyo Pop's version. Also when Ryou says "show me what you can do with it" the way the VA was plying it sounded like he was seducing Ichigo! LOL
@ILoooveKishu The Japanese don't have a regular SH so they use SHU but they are trying to say Quiche. Fansubs just gave it literal romanization without translation.
My Tokyo Mew Mew collection's pretty weird I've got volumes 1-5 in French since I live in France(yeah even though I was 12 when I bought them, I wasn't pleased by the fact that they had totally flipped the manga so that younger readers could read it more easily >:(, I mean I knew how to read manga when I was 11) and then volumes 6 and 7 and Tokyo Mew Mew à le mode are the Tokyo Pop version (since the french editors were taking such a long time to publish them) should I get the kodansha omnibus?
It depends on if you like that sort of thing. If you like magical girl stuff, go ahead and read it. Just don't expect it to be hard core or too complicated.
@timeXsong They haven't really used insults like that. All they really put down is Idiot or Stupid. And Kodansha correctly translated Quiche saying "Tart!" instead of Witch XD. But there is something concerning Tart that I will address in the next review.
I just finished reading the kondansha omnibuses and looked (first time reading the mangas). when I switched to the tokyopop version fro a la mode, it was quite jarring and the difference threw for a loop within a few panels.
so I am making a bio project for extra credit about wether the dna experiments in Tokyo Mew Mew could be done in real life (XD extra credit I'm such a nerd I already have an A in that class *face-palm*) Is there more info about the DNA in the third omnibus that I need to include in my project
The only problem is that the Quiche/Kiss pun only happened in the anime. Also I've seen many shows here that made the same pun without changing the spelling.
@APMewmewHaymedow It's a book for kids, so they wanted to add the slang and stuff to appeal to younger readers. Other mistakes, I can't really defend them on XD. It worked, didn't it? TMM became a big seller despite what TokyoPop did. Also, about Quiche. It doesn't matter the how it's pronounced in Japanese. They spelled it in Katakana, which meant that the name was meant to be English. TokyoPop translated Pie and Tart right. For some reason, they just didn't do it with Quiche.

I just had a lightbulb moment. You know how they changed the spelling of Zakuro's name so that the pun could make more sense? They may have done the same thing for the Quiche/Kiss pun. Kishu and Kissu sound far more similar than Quishe and Kiss.
I wondered why all the translations started out using the word "animal" instead of "anima", so I looked it up. Apparently, anima means " the part of the mind directed towards the subconscious". Makes sense, right? That's the second definition. The first one is "the feminine part of a man's personality". I get the feeling the translators thought the Japanese version was shortening words to make them easier to pronounce. The Japanese author loved puns and wordplay, after all.
I'm guessing the translator didn't make the connection between Digital Monsters and Digimon. Probably not a fan. Digimon helped get me into anime as well. Are you excited for the boxset? Look forward to omnibus 3.

Now that I think about, I think I can understand why Kodansha gave the manga a teen rating. I don't think it was for the volume on its own, but rather for the entire series. Maybe they thought they whole thing with Aoyama becoming and struggling against Deep Blue in volumes 6 and 7 would be a little frightening for young viewers (it kinda freaks me out a bit, and I'm in high school). Just my guess

Am I going to be killed for spelling the aliens Kisshu, Pai and Taruto (and Gattoo)? >_> I am perfectly aware of what they're supposed to mean, but I handle them same as Minto, Retasu and Purin in their human versions. So many choices... (in the German version he sings a little song at this point XD)
Haha ikr I saw the anime first. But now both of the names make sense. I mean Kisshu/Kish kinda matches up with him greeting people he likes with a kiss. But Quiche matches too cause all of the other aliens have food names. I still call him Kish/Kisshu though :p

He's a monster, but I forget what/why he was made. Know Your Memes actually has a video of it up here; just type "Know Your Memes Slenderman". I haven't seen the video and he's supposed to be pretty creepy-looking (I believe he's tall and thin, has no eyes, and a slit for a mouth, if I remember correctly), so....yeah, just go in knowing that.
