The comparison between TokyoPop and Kodansha's versions of the Tokyo Mew Mew manga is finally here. Sorry it took so long! This half discusses the introduction, picture quality and the first half of the character info.
@@amandaapoofy2655 - in some ways I still am, not as big of a fan as I was when I was young but I do have Kodansha's omnibus print and even bought the new Tokyo Mew Mew New visual guidebook
@metalcoola She refers to herself in the 3rd person in the Japanese version. The most likely reason why they would put "yay!" is probably because what she said originally all the time, "na no da", is suppose to put emphasis on what she says. So they added it to show the excitement in her speech.
@squeaky93 Twice in the US. The 3rd one was the one released in Singapore, which was released around the same time the TokyoPop version was. Although, finding copies of that version is almost impossible unless you live there.
@shikamarusgirl17 As I mentioned during the Mint, Lettuce and Pudding segment, the 3rd one was the one released in Singapore. The Kodansha version was released on the 25th last month. The next one will be released December.
Your information on the characters' attacks and weapons is very helpful. Also, I just got the Kodansha version and already I can see differences between it and Tokyopop's version, but I'm watching your reviews out of curiosity anyway. :D
Kinda blown away by the difference in picture quality. Gosh, the Omnibus version is so much better quality, the artwork itself looks much much better! I always thought the lining and tones looked weak in Tokyopop. Zacro/Zakuro's name isn't a huge issue. It's no different from the Kish/Kishu/Kisshu/Quiche thing. Sure. I'll always prefer Zakuro but I don't mind too much. It's definitely nice they decided on attack names, they sure were patchy in Tokyopop. Thanks for reporting on this :D
@LoneWolfZakuro14 It obviously did since fans didn't seem to figure it out or believed me until I posted this video with proof XD(There's also the fact that until this version was released, no official version of the anime or manga, except the French manga, translated the pun right or was completely off all together). Also, it's still pronounced the same and means the same thing. It's just a different romanization of the spelling.
Very well done^0^ I did also notice the difference in the picture quality to be much better in the kodansha version. I did wonder why they changed Zakuro to Zacro, and I think ur explanation makes sence! I too also think they did it to keep close to her attack name Zacros pure!
I also find the change in her name to be interesting, but I also agree that it makes sense. I'm glad that the attacks are done justice with a better translation, and that the artwork is printed better. Until this video, I didn't realize how nice the art in it was because of the Tokyopop version. Sure, it's not the prettiest manga I've read by any stretch of the imagination, but the Kodansha edition defnitly shows its true "beauty".
@Sakura10594 I'm sure they have it(since TokyoPop hasn't had it in years and now they're out of business) but they just haven't announced a release yet. A la Mode is still pretty easy to find, so I'm sure they're just waiting or TP's version to sort of die down first.
@Sakura10594 My copy of that volume didn't have that mistake. Did you have the 1st or 2nd print edition?(1st print would have the glittery title and a really small TokyoPop logo on the book spine. 2nd print doesn't have the glitter and a really bit TP logo.)
@Sakura10594 What I mean is that the Tokyo Mew Mew title on the front sparkles in the first edition. I have first edition on all of the first series. So I'm guessing that mistake in the 6th volume only happened in the 2nd edition printing. I'm not sure about A la Mode since they only said the first series specifically and there isn't a release date for it yet if they do. The 2nd one comes out in December. I'm not sure about the 3rd(volumes 5-7). Amazon says April but RightStuf says February XD.
@LoneWolfZakuro14 It's also a brand of Japanese Pomegranate wine and a brand of pomegranate scented beauty products. And quite a few Japanese people spell it both ways.
I'm not totally sure but it seems likely since TokyoPop went out of business and Kodansha owns all of the Mew Mew manga. They just haven't announced anything yet. It took a full year for TokyoPop to release A la Mode after they finished the first series. So I expect something similar to happen this time around too (hopefully, not as long).
Great comparision video, in Polish version, they left names Ichigo, Minto, Retatsu, Purin and Zakuro, without romanising them and they translated attacks correctly, honorifcs are missing, but, characters still call themselves by last names, Purin speak about herself in 3rd person{Not sure, if it`s in Japanese/English or other country manga, but in Polish, they added "Yay!" sound to almost everything she says}, and Retatsu speech is very politeful
All of the extras are in the books they're suppose to be in. The first 2 omnibuses have 2 volumes each while the 3rd omnibus will have the last 3 volumes of the first series.
@LoneWolfZakuro14 The point is to not make a big deal with it(don't be the Ichigo picture I showed with the whiny voice XD), just like with the whole Quiche/Kish, Minto/Mint ect. thing. If there is a plausible reason and it's pronounced the same, I don't really mind, especially since it helped to finally prove my point on what their original weapon and attack names were XD. Also, I did a google image search for Zacro and it showed pomegranates too.
@LoneWolfZakuro14 Actually it was hiragana while normal and katakana as a Mew Mew. Both English spellings of her name are spelled the same way in Japanese. And there are pictures of actual pomegranates on Japanese websites that are labelled as Zacro. I guess it depends on personal preference.
@cookiemewmew I'm pretty sure that might be vampire game. Some copies of Volume one switches to Lettuce transforming into a mermaid for a few pages. probably a printing issue.
@HikaYagami Impossible to find in bookstores, but you can buy them off ChuangYi's website for 7 Singapore dollars. I'm going to buy the Kodansha version though, because in the Singapore version, the mews' names aren't romanized, and there's the infuriating 'Kish' instead of 'Quiche' mistake.
@APMewmewHaymedow Yep. She says Pudding instead of I in the Japanese version. That aspect is taken out of all of the English translations due to it sounding really unnatural to an English native speaker.
Sorry for not watching the first part first and then saying "What happened to Zakuro?!". I do have some evidence that they shouldn't have changed it to Zacro. 1) Zakuro sounds like a guy's name. 2) Like you said with Quiche and Kish, if you look up Zakuro's name on Google, all you will find are pomegranates. While the other girls have their solid Ichigo, Mint, Pudding, Lettuce names, Zacro is the only who doesn't make sense. The name Zakuro did not get in the way of the attack pun at all.
@HikaYagami I'm not a whiny Ichigo, thank you. I'm just an elitist. XD And I did a google image search with "Zacro" and it showed cologne and a goth-looking band.
@HikaYagami I'm a translator, and I understand where you're coming from. But! I DO know which names SHOULD and should not be changed. The name "Ruka" in Gakuen Alice changed to Luca. Luca is OFFICIALLY WRITTEN as a foreigner. Zakuro has never had any hints of being a foreigner whatsoever. The fact that she can speak many languages is not rare with some anime characters native to Japan. And previously, I meant Zacro sounds like a guy's name; Zakuro is a beautiful female name.
Huh. I was not aware the TMM manga was being re-released by Kodansha. Now if only someone would re-license the anime and dub it all the way, then my life would be complete.
I think I will forever say 'Ribon' with no indication of meaning /sob Oh god, the attack puns kind of killed me... I have never actually known so much of it, despite being in this fandom for 5 years. WTF, self? What I get for reading German and missing out on English manga wank, I guess XD 'Zacro', huh? I think it doesn't look pretty, but cool enough to suit her...
oh lord these names can get impossible to pronounce especially like a manga noob like myself lol! i never read the tokyo pop version before just got the omnibus a couple of weeks ago enjoying it so far but sometimes i cheat and call the mew mews by there english dub 4kids names just easy or lazyer for me to remember lol!
I wish I had waited to buy this omnibus .o. Ugh I was a naive 6th grader >w< But whatever, I'll just have to make money to buy these new copies like the hardcore mew mew fan I am xD
@HikaYagami XD I'm not trying to be hostile. I'm just shocked you would think Zacro would be a good translation. I know there are other people who think the same. I'm a big fan of your channel, actually. I totally forgot about my username. XD I used to use mewpudding.
Hey there it’s been awhile since we last talk I know we can still talk about our favourite anime show but listen have you ever did a reaction with the Tokyo Mew Mew Cast reacting to things happening on RU-vid just give it a try and see for 2020 if that would help.
I'm not sure what you mean. If you mean the Japanese cast, Ichigo and Aoyama's VAs (Saki Nakajima and Megumi Ogata) bought the Nakayoshi magazine containing the first chapter of the all-male spinoff and Ichigo's VA also encouraged old and new fans to watch Tokyo Mew Mew (since it was posted up to watch legally on various Japanese streaming services).
@LoneWolfZakuro14 In the anime, no but the manga did hint at it. And how can something sound like a guy's name if it's pronounced the same? I didn't just put the languages thing as a reason. Of course, if your username is any indication, I'm guessing your just used to how her name is normally spelled and will keep arguing about it until I give up. And since I can never win an argument anyways and you're practically the only one who disagrees with me, I'll just stop right now.
SOS SOS Attention all RU-vidrs Tokyo Mew Mew It’s coming back in 2020 but not in the way that you may well remember go watch a video called TOKYO MEW MEW RETURNS!...AS A MALE SPIN-OFF?! Tokyo Mew Mew Au Lait 2020 New | Ami Yoshiko then you see my point🤯
