Howdy, bookworms. Here's the third instalment of 'to be or not TBR', my critically acclaimed (maybe) series to let you know which books I've read recently, and whether they were any good or a load of old tripe. This is truly the reading list of someone unhinged.

100% agree with everything you said about midnight library. Felt exactly the same. One thing I did notice after reading this book i do reflect on the messages from it during certain life situations quite regularly so it obviously had a way of serving its purpose x

If you haven’t already read it I’d really recommend Witch Light by Susan Fletcher. It’s written in a really beautiful way and is so similar to Where The Crawdads Sing i.e. stunningly descriptive landscapes and a wild, lonely girl who has nothing except her connection to the land - but set in the highlands of Scotland against the back drop of the Glencoe Massacre. It’s dark in places but her story is told so beautifully and it’s one of my absolute favourites!

Having watched one of your book reviews I found myself wanting to read and have since purchased a few books to restart the love I had of reading. 100% agree on Midnight Library. It just didn’t quite hit the mark for some reason. Also kept being bothered by the fact that Nora didn’t know anything about the lives she was being thrust into. Seemed obvious that they wouldn’t quite work out for her because she never had the full context or knowledge base, so the stress of the situations was framed around her confusion/discomfort instead of her deciding if she actually felt fulfilled.

AGREE with classics. I’ve put myself through the pain of pushing through several and they’re just not for me - it’s okay. Reading is for everyone, but not every book is for everyone. You could try an audiobook of a classic? Takes some of the effort out of reading :) it’s great for us dyslexics that don’t stand a chance with some books. Loving all the other picks in this video though! Sad to say they’re all on my tbr and have been for far too long 😂

Really glad to hear you talk about Shuggie Bain! I'm a Glaswegian so everyone under the sun recommends it but for some reason I never had a desire to read it (same as you with the cover, I am bad for judging by covers) so nice to hear positive words about it. Also appreciate the positive chat about it being in Scots dialect because so many people would be put off by that! Currently on Song of Achilles (making my way through your recommendations of old) and, as recommended by a lady in Waterstones, my next book is The Mad Womens' Ball

I felt EXACTLY the same way about The Midnight Library. I mean, I whizzed through it and really enjoyed it, but I wanted it to be less...obvious, I guess. Not that it was totally predictable or anything, but that I wanted it to challenge me more. Still recommend it, though! For sure.

I hated the midnight library, rated it 2 stars 🙈 I loved the concept but found it soooo obvious, there was absolutely no subtlety and I felt like I knew exactly where it was going. But I just finished Ariadne and loved it, and loved Shuggie Bain when I read that a few months ago! I'm trying to get into classics too and enjoyed the picture of Dorian grey but I'm attempting Oliver Twist right now and it's a very difficult read. The writing and language is so dense but my toxic trait is finishing every book I start even if I hate it 🙃

Midnight Library was an ok read for me. It was self reflecting but it was also a bit of a depressing read and I felt that way even after putting the book down. I've read many classics but can admit I've never even heard of Brideshead Revisited. A book I'd recommend is The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek. It's a quick, entertaining read with some history behind it. Thanks for another great video! I'm really enjoying the Disney Vlogs too...your excitement comes thru and I find myself smiling and excited with you and Adam! 😊

I get what you mean with Midnight Library. I wanted it to be life affirming and one of those books that I'd gift to others but I just didn't get that from it. Ariadne is on my TBR list so I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on that. I've just read The Book of Lost Names whilst on holiday and it has immediately gone into my top 5 books of all time! Such a beautiful story, moved me to tears at so many parts!

I completely agree - Shuggie Bain instantly went up towards to top of my forever list. Such an unbelievably gorgeous book. I had the pleasure of seeing Douglas Stuart talk on an international authors stage in Stockholm in May and they say don’t meet your heroes but my god did Douglas Stuart live up to my hype. He was such a wonderfully eloquent and genuine and passionate and down to earth person. You can really tell that every single word of that book means so much to him. He spent 12 years writing it. Shuggie’s story is somewhat based on his life. He spoke specifically about choosing to write in dialect, and that he wanted to portray life in that time and place as authentically as he could.

Okay firstly, watching this from Adelaide where it is well and truly not the height of summer so all those things you mentioned at the start do in fact apply to me 😆 And secondly, I think the Klaxons are actually playing a festival at one of the wineries here later this year so they must be still going in some capacity! Also, Douglas Stuart did an episode of Annie Mac’s podcast Changes which I would really recommend - the whole podcast in general is brilliant and so interesting!

If you really appreciated Shuggie Bain then I'd strongly recommend Young Mungo which is Douglas Stuart's latest novel! I finished The Silence of the Girls recently! It’s pretty bleak 😅 I think I would have enjoyed it a bit more if I knew the Iliad better as it feels like the author assumes the reader knows the original story so a few things probably went right over my head, but it does what you described the Manningtree Witches (which I have just started) does in creating an atmosphere that is full of suspense and pulls you in to the time period and environment very well 👍

I gave up on Midnight Library after just a few chapters as I didn't feel that this difficult and sensitive topic was handled with very much nuance or care at all. Nora's situation and reasoning for ending her life in the beginning felt so forced and bizzare to me - like the author didn't feel like actually dealing with the topic of mental illness and just decided to instead let Nora have a single bad day (side note, very unrealistically bad day!) to make that decision to get the plot going. To me, this almost felt like it made light of mental illness and people that actually struggle with suic*dal thoughts... I don't know, maybe that's just me, but it really didn't sit right with me.

ugh YES. Ariadne is fantastic, I adore all of the Jennifer Saint books! And yes do read Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker followed by Women of Troy by Pat as well - they are brilliant and show the female perspective of the siege of Troy.

When I saw Shuggie Bain in the thumbnail I had a little fear in case you didn't like it. Literally just finished it myself and think about it all the time.

Midnight Library was life changing. Matt Haig writes with such simplicity but conveys SO MUCH. Truly a favorite.

Agree on reading classics, trying to genuinely enjoy them but failing! I tried to read Emma and the drama is just so low stakes, fancy people having long boring conversations, everything was so stilted! Feels illegal to say it tho 👀 Jane Eyre is my exception cos Miss Brontë brought the drama

I watched the 80s TV version of Brideshead Revisited as a teen, but found the novel unfinishable, despite having read others by Evelyn Waugh. I do recommend the show. (You're definitely not imagining either the gay relationship or the total awfulness of the main character.)
