I would be interested in a Lucy Bookclub? I dont know how this would work but i feel it would be so fun if we all would read a certain book and chat about it. Atm i read a lot but have no one i could really talk to
I think discord would be a fantastic opportunity for this! I'm in a few book discord groups and I love it! (This is an app for anyone who doesn't know 🥰)
I really hope you see this Lucy! So I just wanted to thank you. You made a comment in one of your previous videos, something about staying out watching you try on clothes precariously above a staircase to talking about books and it made me take note of just how much your content has changed. The funny thing is I didn’t really notice as I had also been going through similar changes in life. Watching your videos make me feel like catching up with a friend. Watching your review of Gilmore Girls And various house renovations videos are a real comfort for me. Keep being your authentic self ❤ so yes, thank you for the years of content.
I love your book content, but I also really miss your "average girl tries" series! Wondering if you could find a way to work that back in, even if it's not beauty related. Average girl tries chalk painting? Insta pot cooking? Vegetable gardening? I'd be here for it!
Sticker residue is also the bane of my existence, but years ago I discovered that Un-Du Adhesive Remover works WONDERS to get rid of that with minimal effort! It's meant for scrapbooking so it doesn't damage the cover.
I had such high expectations for Detransition, baby but I just found it a bit all over the place plot wise. I struggled to follow it to be honest which was so sad because I wanted to love it so much! But loved the characters! Love your TBR or not TBR videos so much ❤️ hope your as well as you can be, love to Flo!
I love these videos Lucy! Crying in H Mart made me sob as well. There was a point where I actually had to put it down for the night and come back to it the day after. It was so beautiful and I also highlighted a lot of passages that spoke to me, which isn’t something I generally do! It also made me want to try ALL of the food mentioned!! A beautiful memoir!
Sounds like I'd love to read this but I wondered if there are any trigger warnings for addiction/domestic violence at all? Just like to be prepared. Thank you!
Oo I read Practical Magic in October as well! Alice Hoffman’s writing always has such a tone. You should read Here On Earth by her. It’s a bit more intense but it was an amazing read.
Love the TBR videos as always Lucy! I think you’ve finally convinced me to give ‘if we were villains’ a go - I’m a sucker for The Secret History and its dark treacle mood 😂 I would recommend Cursed Bunny by Bora Chung for you to read next!
I'd definitely recommend The Rules of Magic which is the prequel to Practical Magic. Its soooooo good. Love your book videos, so thank you for sharing xxx
I’m currently reading Payback’s a Witch by Lana Harper- it really hits that witchy, cosy vibe you described! I’ve not seen anyone else talking about it, please give it a go!!
Also read this in Oct. I enjoyed. IMO, it was a little like a Hallmark Christmas Movie (cozy holiday romance), making the characters witches and substituting "the magic of christmas" for Halloween, spells, and hexes. It wasn't what I expected but still a good, fun read.
Hi Lucy my heart soars when I get a notification for a new video. I love you so much. I have c PTSD and can't read books but have audible so I don't miss out. Thank you for the Practical magic review I have watched the film many times and can't wait to listen to the book. Hi Flo and Adam. Thanks Lucy x xxx x
I recently read If We Were Villains and I agree wholeheartedly. It was AMAZING! I also wish I had read it sooner! It really was amazing. The Shakespeare quotes were so cleverly inserted. I don't know much about Shakespeare but I do want to read more from him after this book. So good!
I love these videos, thanks for sharing! I struggle to find books I like so as soon as I see you've reviewed it on storygraph, I request it from the library straight away!
If we were villains has been sitting on my shelf for ages to read and this is making me want to pick it up now! I’m pretty sure I’ll love it and I’m in a major reading slump so I should just read it already.
I've had crying in H Mart on my tbr for so long but haven't brought myself to read it yet! I agree that Detransition baby is so chaotic ha! I'm reading Her Majesty's Royal Coven at the moment, only a few chapters in and enjoying it. Its basically about Millenial witches!
I just finished reading The Kingdoms by Natasha Pulley today, and I thought it was great... it is an alternate history, has some interesting time travel and a dash of romance
Whenever I watch your videos, I immediately want to pick up a book and read. My reading has taken a real dive recently because of a hectic new role at work but I really need to stop scrolling and read instead! I always feel better for it. Love the sound of If We Were Villains!
Having read (and loved) The Secret History, I may just have to have If We Were Villains for Christmas 👀 One of my favourite book series is the All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness - definitely try the first book A Discovery of Witches if you haven't already 🖤
I've had Mrs England on my shelf since it came out, I loved her first two books so much that I have been nervous to read her latest one. Feel like I have to bite the bullet now as you have me intrigued!
I really enjoyed it! The characters are intriguing and the main character you are rooting for her even if she does make bad choices at times. I read Mrs England before her other books just because I didn’t realise she had two other books out so maybe I’ll have a different opinion once I’ve read them
As someone who really did not get on with Detransition, baby , I thought it was so interesting to hear you talk about expectation of what the book would be vs reality. I described it as "it felt like a lot of essays in a book rather than a book itself" so saying it was character driven was something I completely agree with. I wonder if I'd known what it was like before reading it if maybe my review would have been more positive?
If you like Practical Magic, try reading the other three in the series. I read the four in chronological order and fell in total love. Honestly, I don’t buy books anymore in paper, when I got my first iPad in 2012, I started reading on it, because I didn’t need another light source! A while back I found Book Bub. They have a wide selection of books for really good prices. I get an email every morning with choices for me and I have read the most wonderful stories. I love historical fiction, as an art history grad, the more historically, richly woven, the better. I am going to search out your last selection…I love Shakespeare and you make it sound so intriguing. I would recommend the Discovery of Witches trio by Deborah Harkness. It is a lovely series and rampant with 16th century English history. There is also a series starring Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode (I adore him!) Love your opinions and can’t wait to read more of your recommendations.😘
I love the Practical Magic series! There are 3 others, the one about the Aunts growing up is possibly my favorite. I'm so excited to see someone with similar reading tastes as myself.
Mauler and Questus by english writer Shawn Williamson. Mauler is indicated by english writer, historian, cinema director Andrew Sinclair. He compares It with White Fang by Jack London.
I listened to the audiobook of Mrs England, and i absolutely adored the fact that the author had a very slight brummy accent, and i think i loved the book just cos of that. A regional accent in an audiobook just makes me feel so calm and enjoy the book so much more lol
Every time I watch one of your videos I’m reminded why I’m subscribed to your channel. You’re so down to earth, intelligent, well spoken and funny, I love your vibes so much 🖤 Much love from a fellow spooky neighbourhood cat person! 🐈
Only got to practical magic so far but feel from what you’ve said you would most definitely enjoy sister song - it’s about three sisters in historical England who have witchy powers and how they help their family and the kingdom as the Saxons begin to invade
Always love your book videos :) !!! You have such a good vibe + love the random cat interruptions :D I will definitely pick up Transition, Baby! And I've already read IWWV several times - so sad but soooo good! My favourite book this year was When Women Were Dragons by Kelly Barnhill (in the 1950s several girls and women all over the world suddenly turn into dragons and no one knows why).
I had the exact same feeling whilst reading Mrs. England, I almost put it on my DNF pile because it was so slow paced but powered through . Crying in H-Mart is still on my TBR list, hearing the review I'm definitely waiting until i'm home alone so i can sob my eyes out lol
Speaking of reading important stories, I'd recommend Kindred by Octavia Butler. It's equal parts historical fiction and sci fi, and follows an African American woman from the 1970s who is somehow transported back to the pre-civil war south. It's really evocative, beautifully written but still very accessible. I recently read Practical Magic and Mrs England too. I loved the writing in PM but found the middle section a bit slow. Totally agree on Mrs England - started really promisingly, and the setting/atmosphere was there, but the plot never really got going like I wanted it to.
Having loved Practical Magic, have you read any Sarah Addison Allen? Garden Spells is my favorite. They have similar sweet fairy tale style magic with romance vibes!
I just finished Deadly Education which I thought was a fab read, very along the young education witchcraft vein close to Harry Potter. I'm excited to read the second in the series. I've also just started reading Circe and I agree with the hype, it's so good so far. I think it especially appeals to me because I love Greek mythology
Yep.. I was reading crying in h mart when I got the the news that my partner’s mother had died. Can’t express how much I cried, but how cathartic and helpful the book ended up being
A book that reads similar to Practical Magic in my mind is The Book Charmer by Karen Hawkins. There’s something just so magical and small town about it. And there’s like hints of small town magic.
I definitely recommend Burial Rites by Hannah Kent. Beautifully written and very brutal but true description of a time period and culture. Had me traveling to all the mentioned places while in Iceland. A perfect fiction based on a true story!
Only one book in but need to comment now before it falls out of my head: The Ice Queen is my fave Alice Hoffman, I LOVED it and suspect you might too. Also, for similarly gentle witchiness (without quite the same punch but with some gorgeous foodie elements), check out Sarah Addison Allen. OK. Back to the video!
Hi Lucy, if you like dark academia, maybe check out Marisha Pessls Special Topics in Calamity Physics - a strange mix between Gilmore Girls (if Lorelai were a single dad, that is) and The Secret History.
Lucy I did not need an excuse to buy more books 😂 I loved crying in h-Mart, was so poignant and beautifully written. definitely want to read We Were Villains now after this.
As always, I enjoyed your video very much. I really love to hear you talk about the characters, the stories, the book as a whole and your experience reading them. Sometimes more than reading them myself. 😝🥰 So my TBR pile is growing and growing…. After watching your video I thought about the fabulous book I am currently reading and I thought that maybe this would be a very nice read for you to. (If you haven‘t read it yet!) It‘s „The House in the Cerulean Sea“ from Travis Klune. Best wishes from Germany!🙋♀️
The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman is the Aunts story and is as just as delicious, it was in my top 5 of 2021 and I still hold it as a book to compare others to.
" Less daunting equally haunting" ....they should definitely put that on the cover. 🤣 I shouldn't watch these...my pocketbook does not thank you but I certainly do!
Crying in H Mart. My best book of the year. doesn't necessarily read like non-fiction. Japanese Breakfast is great as well: Be Sweet to Me Baby, Paprika, Savage Good Boy, This Body is a Blade (original title: My Mommy is dying)
Elizabeth Lee Cunning Women: A feminist tale of forbidden love after the witch trials This has you written all over it! I read and enjoyed Mrs England after seeing you as it into your tbr pile. I really enjoyed it, but I do know what you mean about lack of a really thrilling climax.
I'm due to go into labour any day and would love a good recommendation to take with me. Nothing that's going to ping off stress hormones, but something that grabs me so I can pick it up easily. And jump back in when I need to. I'm not a fan of 'romance'. Any ideas greatly appreciated 🙂
Anxious People (mystery type, light "hostage" situation, lots of charcters) or Man Called Ove (slightly dark, but still lighthearted and cute) by Fredrik Backman Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osmand (scooby doo -meddling kids +seniors = fun light murder mystery and it's a series if you like it). None of them are romances, all fun, light reads.
Also, I’m saddened that you don’t read your books again. I have re-read more books than I have read new books. 😂 It’s sort of sad, but I’ve found if I go back to an old story, I usually get something new from it that’s completely different than the original read.
Hey Lucy (and anyone else!) I’m looking for a recommendation. I’d love to read a thriller/mystery book, no violence, and something that’s good for a newbie to thrillers! Any suggestions please?
As you enjoyed Practical magic I would really recommend Alice Hoffmans short story Bookstore Sisters. I just finished reading it and it was really good!
I absolutely hated If We Were Villans. I thought it was lazy writing. It’s like the writer wrote the first draft and was like, damn this is too short, so just copied and pasted chunks of Shakespeare. And I love Billy Shake.
I laughed about the Ginger boyfriend being a strange brother sister relationship because me and my brother are both Gingers, we look like we are related. we have been asked if we dated before. we both loudly said ewwww NOOO!!!! lol
