I felt that Andrew Garfield gets too much credit for Spider-Man whilst Tobey doesn't get enough which is kinda a bummer (they both should get 50-50 credibility and praise for Spidey)...that way there won't be much hate between those two ;)

Tobey Maguire was literally a perfect portrayal. I grew up reading Spider-Man, when it first came out and I first found out Tobey would be playing him I was stoked because I already had a big crush on him in previous movies, but not because my crush but because I knew he was a great sensitive thoughtful actor and he would look very good for the role and as it turned out it was even better than I thought, I loved the movies, Raimi is one of my favorite directors and Tobey is one of m favorite actors. I don't understand how people can complain about his performance, I literally don't know what they are talking about besides the 3rd movie, which wasn't his fault, he did was he was supposed to do and he did it well and he looked good doing it, the writing was the problem, the freakng casting for Venom. With Tobey, I can relate to him completely because that's exactly how I was in high school, I was afraid to stand up for myself, I was shy and awkward, I awkwardly froze when faced with girls I liked, I was bullied a lot, I dressed like a nerd/geek. This video is why Sam is one of my favorite reviewers. He makes logical and reasonable arguments that make him look intelligent rather than stupid. Even though I do kind of like the Amazing series more for its ideas rather than them being movies themselves, the fact that they were poorly received as they were tells us that something was wrong in the production process. Also, to all the fans out there who want Andrew and Tobey to come back: Move on. Seriously, it's for the better.

Spider-man 2 is my favorite hero movie, one of my favorite movies in general, these movies are what brought this new phenomenon for super hero movies, they were amazing, and tobey was amazing, stop freaking hating, watch the first two again, if you still think hes bad, then get your eyes or ears checked or pick up an actual spider-man comic and see how he is supposed to be.

My thoughts on that scene is that the scene is there to make us want Peter to get out of the venom suit. One major point of the black Spiderman suit is to show that it corrupts Peter and messes him up. Also how will an alien symbiote make Peter Parker cool or a badass. I don't honestly. Sam Raimi grew up reading 60's/70's Spider-Man and he had no interest in Venom and honestly I don't care for that character either. Raimi had no interest in the character and it shows, but I blame Sony. They wanted the character despite Raimi's disinterest in the character

Andrew Garfield was okey in amazing spiderman (2012 film) but horrible in amazing spiderman 2 (2014 film) Tobey Maguire on the other hand was good in spiderman (2002 film) and fantastic in spiderman 2 (2004 film) and horrible in spiderman 3 (2007 film).....sorry Andrew but Tobey Maguire was a better spiderman

Yes. Tobey Maguire has been and still is the best incarnation of Spider-Man. Thank you for defending him clearly and logically. I went into The Amazing Spider-Man with an open mind, expecting a different take on the character. Ultimately it was as you said a mishmash of different contradictory caricatures that didn't work. Not saying, and I don't think you are either, that Andrew Garfield is a bad actor, just that his take on Spider-Man was very inconsistent. Tobey Maguire gets accused of being lame, but these people forget that that was the goal. To make him an uncool, slightly awkward, and ultimately relatable human character. Wish more movies nowadays had the courage to create uncool yet likeable protagonists in non-comedies. Great video.
Great video, Toby captures the spirit of Spider-man perfectly, he doesn't need to have the same personality of the character of the comics to be good. I never cared for the superficial elements and references to the comics in the movies, I cared about the characters and story. Most other superhero movies are very inaccurate to their comic book counterparts, most people don't complain, but Spider-man, people nitpick more about inaccuracies to the comics in the movies, maybe because we have multiple versions of the same character, once we get another Iron Man, Id love to see the infighting between fans with the comics as the main defense.
You hit the nail on head with this, man. Tobey's Peter Parker/Spider-Man was more relatable and his character struggles in SM2 and how he got over them in the end, was inspiring to watch. He was a better representation of the early Stan Lee/Steve Ditko Spider-Man comics. People seem to like Garfield more because he was basically cracking jokes a lot.
Yeah, I think Nostalgia Critic should have used this as the defense for Spiderman Old vs New. The Amazing series really didn't connect with me. I don't even remember a single line. There are moments Andrew did really good as Spiderman, but I didn't like his Peter Parker. I grew up with the Raimi version while reading the comics and watching the show,; I can honestly say that I think that Toby made a better Peter Parker until the 3rd movie.

Tobeys Peter Parker was more based on 616 while Andrews was based on ultimate were he actually is a bit of a cocky person and I could relate with Andrews Peter and spiderman better than tobeys but Tobey was till a good Peter Parker only his face didn't really match like Andrews did.
While the Amazing series will always have their fans, it's clear that in the future, the Raimi series will be the ones fondly remembered for reshaping and redefining the superhero genre whereas the Webb movies will be largely forgotten.
I think you cut Spider-Man 2 short by just calling it the best Spider-Man movie. A better term would be one of the best superhero movies! The Dark Knight and Winter Soldier are pretty awesome too but SM2 has so much character development and passion in each scene I can't help but love every second

Hold up, I wasn't insulting Toby's appearance or saying that Garfield being a good looking actor makes him bad for the role. Like Sam mentioned in the video with the amazing series they incorporated too many contrasting elements into Peter's character. On one hand, he's a charming hip teenager with gelled up hair and a skateboard, but on the other hand we're supposed to buy that he's a socially awkward loser who gets bullied. It's not that Spiderman is ugly, its more that he isn't overtly handsome and sexy like a rockstar. This is why he attracts girls like Gwen Stacy and not ditsy Cheerleaders. I'm okay with peter growing out of that dorky demeanor later on as the story progresses, which seems to be what they've done with the comics, but Garfield's version was like that from the beginning. It has everything to do with the character's portrayal and not just his superficial appearance. Garfield was a fine choice for spiderman, he was just given bad direction. Maguire and Garfield are both good looking guys and good actors but Maguire's version is just handled better. Now that i'm done writing about handsome dudes, I'm gonna fire up redtube and look at some tits to remind myself that I still like girls.
Great video. You've pretty much hit the nail right on the head with Spider-Man. Like Moviebob said, 'Spider-Man is cool because Peter Parker is not', and that's why we can all relate to him as a character. Sam Raimi understood that, Greg Weisman understood that, to a lesser extent, John Semper, Lee Gunther, and Ralph Bakshi understood that. Mark Web, Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and the people at Sony dont', and I'd like to think that Paul Dini understood that, but either he doesn't, or someone at Disney XD told him not to be faithful. With that being said, I'm gonna remain cautious about Spidey's future on movie screens.
It would be cool to see this this version of Spider-Man come back and join the MCU. Reasons Why: 1. It will give fans abit of a nostalgic factor and the lightheartedness fit with MCU 2. Since Tobey is older. We will have a chance to see adult/more mature Spider-Man with new struggles and breakout of the constant pattern with new incarnation with teen Peter, teen Peter, teen Peter (Spider-Man was grown up and married during Civil War) 3. It can give a chance for the studios to resurrect William Dafore's Norman Osborn (which happens in the comics) so we can have a return of the Green Goblin (in a better updated suit of corse) but since the Iron Patriot armor was reviled in "Ironman 3" Osborn can take the suit and start the Dark Avengers 4. In "Spider-Man 3" they revealed Sandman and he too also becomes a reserved member of the Avengers. It can work because Sandman became a good guy in the end of the film. I think it sounds like a good idea what do you think? :)
Man, this video literally changed the way I look at the trilogy now. I've always loved them but watching this and hearing your points made me love them and appreciate them even more. Also one of the things that bothered me so much in SM3 was Peter crying so damn much but then it hit me... This dude is going through sooooooo much shit in this movie. His best friend tried to kill him, he ends up almost killing his best friend (twice) his relationship is falling slowly falling apart, his uncles killer is still on the loose, he's on the brink of losing his job to Brock, and on top of all that, he's trying to be the best hero he can be. Yeah, plus when it came to villains I can remember everything they said even years later because they were well-done. Even Venom (who sadly got shafted) was memorable but Defoe's Green Goblin takes the cake. On the other hand I can only remember one thing Electro said in ASM2. Also glad to see someone agrees with me that Garfield was not the right choice for Peter Parker considering he rode a skateboard and acted all hipster. That's not Peter. He's meant to be socially awkward and uncomfortable to be around and that's why I say that scene of Peter dancing in Spider-Man 3 was done ON PURPOSE cause to Peter, that's what he thought cool and confidant looked like.

The94Venom I'm glad Venom got SOME time to shine but I feel his story and character arc was too in-depth to squeeze into the tail-end of the movie. cause Eddie Brock is at his core the dark reflection of Peter Parker whereas he lost his parents but still had an aunt and uncle to care for him Eddie became an orphan. I just feel like his backstory could've been fleshed out a bit more.

You are one of the few movie reviewers online that "get" Spider-Man, and one one film series (Raimi's) actually worked, and why the other (Webb's), was nothing but a heartless cash grab/retain the rights by Sony. It's unfathomable to me that more people don't see this. Raimi and company told great stories, the ASM series had no clue what it was doing.

Toby Maguire was a great Spider Man and a fantastic Peter Parker, he is more relatable and not just cast to appeal to fan girls. Garfield is a good actor but he's no Spider-Man and definitely not Peter Parker. I can't understand why people have hailed Garfield as Spider man and have completely forgotten about Maguires fantastic performance in the Remey trilogy

EXACTLY. This is exactly what I've been trying to tell TASM fanboys. I mean, as lame as Peter looks doing that dancing shit or strutting to Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head, that perfectly captures the overall feeling of Peter Parker if he was a real person. He was delightful to watch IMO. It's like these fanboys don't understand that we're not always supposed to fully understand or even love our characters at times... at least at first. But, they're not supposed to be as alien to us as Garfield's Peter Parker. That was like watching Travis Bickle try to be a superhero. As a girl, i related to tobeys peter much more than andrew lol. I didnt get the guy, i wasnt popular or ridiculously good looking, and the whole idea of people putting on a "mask" to hide their insecurities is very true! (I always wore a hat to hide my face and felt more comfortable...take that hat away and i would just breakdown lol). So sam raimi spiderman is very very relatable lol. The new spidey just came off as an asshole douchebag to me lol...his jokes were just aeghhh....and i wanted him to shutup. His outfit was really nice though...and new peter has some mad silkscreening sewing skillz lol. i do like the slim looking spiderman lol. I hope the civil war spidey will be the "underdog unpopular uncool peter but im pretty sure he'll be more like andrews but who knows lol.
Dude, this video is so perfect I can't even tell you. You seriously make me jealous every time you post a video XD I'd never really considered why I preferred Maguire, I always figured it was just that I'd grown up with his version. To be honest, that was probably at least partly true. Garfield would never be Spider-Man to me, even if he nailed the character. But I when I watched this, I suddenly realised why Maguire works so well. He completely encapsulates what makes Spidey one of the most enduring superheroes. The only other adaptation to do this is Spectacular, which had the added bonus of the characters actually looking their age! Josh Keaton was excellent at portraying both sides of the Peter/Spidey persona and definitely had awkward down to a tee. Finally someone says it! Everyone has something bad to say about Tobey when Tobey made spider man "Spider-Man" he is and forever will be THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN.
You bring up a lot a good points and a lot of stuff I've been saying for years. And while I don't think Tobey is the "perfect" Spider-Man, I definitely don't think he deserves to get bashed as much as he does especially when people say he's NOTHING like Peter Parker. And while I don't agree with everything you said about Garfield's Spider-Man you do bring up a lot of good points there as well especially how people just think he's perfect just because he cracks jokes
I mean I know the majority of people do like him for more than that, including myself for the most part. But you'd be surprised at how many people I've seen say "Andrew is way better than Tobey, he cracks jokes and Tobey never did that" and that's it.

You Nailed It Sam! I may not be the biggest fan of Tobey Maguire, but I will always give him a pat on the back for Spider-Man 2. Garfield on the other hand, eh.. he's a good actor. But as Spider-Man I'd say he's 50/50, but he practically comes off as a Deadpool wannabe, but his Peter Parker is a pretentious cocky douchebag, though that's more of a problem with the terrible writing, but it is what it is. It makes me wonder why the "fanboys" think his take is the definitive version of the character, hell they worship it as if he's like a king. When they should be aware that the original idea of Peter Parker/Spider-Man is that he's a timid, awkward, nerdy young adult or teenager who gets bullied, that deals with the struggles of adolescence and responsibilities of being a hero, and yet they call themselves "FANBOYS"??!?!? Tobey's version was always trying to stay true to that idea. But they also tried to make good quality films. I long for the day the FANBOYS stop complaining about almost everything. Whenever I think of Spider-Man on screen, I think more of Tobey Maguire. Mainly cause I admire Spider-Man 2 and also for how strong the character was in that film. I'm new to your channel and thank God, this is one of the best videos on Spider-Man and just RU-vid in general I've ever seen. I 100% agree, no I 1,000,000% agree!!! You didn't miss a single beat in this analysis, everything was just so right.
I don't think it was good nor bad, it was...okay. Mary Jane and Peter's relationship was terrible, they did a bad job telling the story at times, and a lot of the decisions the characters made were illogical and dumb. But I do enjoy it to certain degree, and I still say it's better than TASM. I'm not bashing Spider-Man 3 at all, because I do agree it gets a lot of unnecessary hate.
***** well the problem with Spider-Man 3 is that they badly portrayed and made Venom acted noting like Venom and Eddie Brock, made Gwen Stacy (one of the most iconic Spider-Man characters) into eye-candy and a useless boring character (which is a big smack in the face for fans but the MJ fangirls won't care for that), Harry's New Goblin outfit looked like another Power Ranger clone, Sandman being the killer of Uncle Ben which butchered the mythos of Spider-Man and made MJ unlikeable...I mean compared to her performance in Spider-Man 1 & 2, she was great. I mean at least in TASM we got Gwen Stacy and George Stacy done right which is more than I can say for whatever Spider-man 3 did with them
Sam doesn't hate the scene, he finds it somewhat amusing actually. The reason spider-man 3 got so much negative feedback was because of stupid retconning, too many villains- not to mention all of them were handled incorrectly, poor character arc resolutions, and more. However, unlike tasm2, it had heart, and the people behind it clearly wanted to make a good movie. Except for Sony. Sony seems to be the main villain in spider-man movies from 2007-2015.

I've been trying to explain this to people for years. It's clear to me that a lot of the Garfield fans have either A.) Never read a Spiderman comic before, or at least have never read any outside of the Ultimate line. B.) Have read some of the comics, but fundamentally misunderstood the character. or C.) Just don't give a f**k about the source material at all, and only like Garfield cause he was the "cool", "edgy" Spiderman. F**k all of those people and Marvel shouldn't listen to any of their nonsense when making the MCU Spiderman movies. They should stick to the source material, particularly the Lee / Ditko stuff, at least when it comes to characterization. The whole point of Peter is that he's not cool. He's awkward and nerdy (and not cool, nerd-chic, but kind of a dork at times), average-looking, poor, a looser like you said, and a living, breathing personification of Murphy's law. Everything that can go wrong for this kid does, and getting superpowers just makes his life that much worse. And yet, he takes it all in stride and forces a smile on his face when he should be depressed as f**k, and thinks of others and puts them before himself. He's stoic and responsible, not carefree and douchey. The one time Peter ever tried to go out and get something for himself, his uncle Ben got murdered, and he feels immense guilt over that, and can't let himself be selfish or irresponsible ever again, and also feels a duty and conviction to help others, even as doing so only further destroys his personal life and erodes his relationships. Spiderman is funny, but he's not a douchebag, and his humor is often self deprecating, and a bit of a coping mechanism. Again, this guy's life is depressing as f**k. He has to tell jokes to get through the day sometimes, but he's not a standup comedian. The first act of Raimi's Spiderman 2 is the perfect representation of Peter's daily life. The guy just can't win. You're supposed to feel for him, so that when he does defeat the bad guy in the end, it's life affirming and you actually want to cheer. It actually means something. These are the things that make Spiderman stand apart from all other superheroes. He's not rich, he's not handsome, he doesn't have help, and getting powers only further complicates his life, but he'll save your life anyways, even though doing so may cause him to miss an important exam, a date or get fired from his job, and he'll do it with an upbeat attitude because he's not gonna sit there and wallow in his self-pity or brood. He's better than that, and he's not gonna let life win. Life may kick Peter in the teeth at every turn, and then kick him while he's down for good measure, but by god he's gonna keep getting back up. THAT'S Peter Parker.

You wanted Sony "to stick to the source material", yet misunderstood the fact that the movie was a fucking reboot. And for reboots, aren't going to be 100% the way you want him to. Peter Parker being awkward is relatable, but Tobey's Spider-Man ISN'T perfect either... he was awkward to the point where you didn't know what the fuck he was doing. Both of the two didn't do complete justice to the character. But as I said before, every ineration of the character isn't the same, the story won't be the complete same, the personality won't be the complete same, and not every ineration will be the same as Tobey's version. They'll share the same elements, but won't be like him or act like him. It's honestly annoyed when other fans become so nitpicky, that they complain and insult a newer version just because they don't like the qualities in that newer version. The actor did his best, yet you insult that version just because it wasn't how you wanted it. Honestly, if you didn't like it, you shouldn't bitch about it.

I totally agree with you dude. I'm glad there getting rid of Garfield but I really hope they skip the origins in this third reboot and jump into a compelling and developed story with memorable marvel characters without rushing it for a future set ups for sequels.
So true! If you start to understand that they intentionaly wanted Peter to look silly while thinking he was cool in Spider-Man 3, you'll appreciate the movie much more. He was being extremly uncool thinking he was cool, because in his mind that is what being cool meant. Raimi and Maguire NAILED how Spider-Man and Peter Parker should be portrayed on the big screen.
After the MCU Spider-Man I think we all can agree that both Tobey and Andrew are perfect Spider-Man. As a comic reader, personalities and stories of both versions are taken from different periods of comics. Spider-Man (2002) is a mashup of Ultimate and Amazing comics, Peter's personality was based on Amazing. TASM (2011) was partly based on Ultimate where Uncle Ben lectures him and Peter takes over his dad's old experiment with Curtis Connors. His personality is based on Ultimate, he may be a loser but he's not that shy, he's used to getting bullied and looked down on but he occasionally lashes out and disses his bullies, even J. Jonah Jameson. Most importantly his Spider-Man is on point, he fucking humiliates criminals. Don't get me wrong, Tobey is still savage, it's just his Spider-Man didn't get as much screen time as Andrew's. Spider-Man (2002) places more focus on Peter's double life, TASM gives his Spider-Man persona a little more attention while his double life still playing a vital role. MCU Spider doesn't have any of that, everything is handed to him, everything seems to go in his favour with occasional bumps, that's it.
Tbh, I used to think Andrew Garfield was a better Spider-Man/Peter Parker after watching TASM films, but after watching this video, I finally realize why Tobey was my favorite all along. He nailed the character! Raimi did his research and remained true to the source material, and that's what I love about the trilogy!
Spiderman 3, even with it's blatant flaws, is still a fun movie to watch because it's knows what it wants to do, kind off. The 2 Amazing Spiderman films, ugh... I'm intrigued on how Spiderman can fit in the MCU and what he can add to it, it'll be freaking amazing if Fox allowed the X-men to be in the MCU with the same actors :D

hallelujah!!! Some one that articulated what I have been trying to tell people for so long! Spiderman has been my all time fav since I was little and the latest movies are really destroying all reasons why I loved Spidey in the first place where I have to binge watch and read the old series and movies to remind me why I love the character. I hope they do him justice in the future but not holding my breath. Miss Tobey Maguire though.
I just want Spiderman in Civil War to remove his mask to reveal his secret identity and OMG IT'S TOBEY MAGUIRE that would be so awesome, but probably impossible to not spoil. Then they should do older PP movies with Tobey Maguire and add Miles Morales for the next solo movies.
I can't see them doing Miles Morales for a long period of time. These movies are a bit of a balancing act. You have to please comic book fans, but you also have to make the film accessible to casual viewers. Peter Parker is the one everyone associates with the character. Putting someone else in the suit would just create confusion for a lot of people. It would be like starting a new Batman film series with Dick Greyson as Batman. Comic fans would know that Dick was Batman for a time, but everyone else would be staring at the screen going "What the fuck? Where's Bruce Wayne?"
Yeah! We totally want a 40 year old Spider-man....NOT! Independent from the question which spider-man is better, both actors are no option because they are both too old. I would be very surprised of Marvel cast an actor older than 25 for this role, and I wouldn't be surprised if they were digging up some really, really young actor for the role.
TheSpaceTiger I like Tobey as Peter Parker. He plays a very good nerdy high school kid. My problem is when he puts on the Spider-Man suit. I'm sorry but when he puts on the Suit I just don't hear Spider-Man. I hear Tobey Maguire in a Spider-Man suit. Garfield had the opposite problem. I loved him when he was in the suit, but I didn't believe him as Peter Parker at all.
I really appreciate this video Sam you definitely opened my eyes up to a few things :), both series for me have their flaws (yes even Spider Man 2 (2004)) but I find both series personally entertaining, I like Tobey and thought he was pretty good, but I do personally like Andrew better, I just think Andrew's take on the character is just different and updated (what's nerdy NOW, was not nerdy back in 2002) and more mature and complex to me. That's not to say Tobey didn't pull off a mature version of the character, but that's just how I see it anyway. I may like the ASM series a lot more than some, but I am looking forward to what comes next for the character. Which villain are you hoping they go for?

However I do wanna point out something here for a second, just because several articles have stated that Andrew is out and that they are doing a new reboot series for the MCU. That information is not exactly fact yet, The Amazing Spider Man 3 directed by Marc Webb with Andrew for all we know could be coming in 2017 and being integrated into the MCU, which is how I personally hoped it would go. And seeing how Sony still has full creative control over these movies I have every reason to believe that they might be doing that. Yes I have looked at the article on Marvel's website, but they don't specify whether it's a reboot or a continuation of TASM series. Those articles you've read about Garfield and Marc Webb being out, are still rumors at this point, and are just speculations based off the hacked Sony emails. So until I here an official statement from Sony and Marvel otherwise, I am still in the belief that they should integrate TASM storyline into the MCU... But... then again if they are going to do a new series, then like you said get Mysterio or Shocker and cast Dylan O' Brien :)
