My blog posting at ToddFun: www.toddfun.com/2011/11/23/rep...
Short episode showing what turned out to be a simple fix to get a 5 disk Sony CD player running like new. One more product saved from the landfill!
Didn't anyone ever tell you to make sure your optics were clean? Buddy boy!
12VoltVids also posted a really good general service video of 5 disk changers. It addresses tray alignment and other faults. • Sony 5 Disk CD changer...

👍👍😎✌️ Nothing wrong with CD players! I have more than 2000 CD’s and I don’t plan on going to a bunch of over compressed , on line stuff! Keep fixing the old stuff some people will appreciate it.

This video really helped. You asked who would be interested in a 5 disc player. Somebody old or folks who frequent garage sales I suppose. We don't all throw everything away with every change in platform, having sunk so much money into audio over the years. I pulled my Sony out of a heap of remnants when my son left home and have been using it for the past 10+ years. And it finally read "No Disk". I figured it was an optical problem just like your guess. It was. But I was intimidated taking it apart not knowing the first thing how to find the counter. I took it apart as you did and cleaned the bit you pointed to and even managed to get it back together, every screw. And it fixed it. So it was more than just an fun "what if". Very useful. Thanks. You better believe I'm going to brag to my son. :-)

Thank you Todd! My old workhorse (Sony Stereo) is still going thanks to your info. The hardest part was removing all those screws and putting them back! You are awesome!

Todd: Thanks! I had the same issue. I took it apart, blew some compressed air, reassembled and now it works like new.

Great video Todd! I have one of these that's still going strong after 20 years and I love it and now maybe I can fix it when it eventually bites the dust. Thank you so much.

I have the identical model Sony changer which I purchased used for $10.00. Tray did not open so given courage by your video, I took top off and discovered that the rubber belt which moves the tray in and out had fallen off. I had to find a new belt and take the carriage off the base to replace it (belt was still loose in the bottom but not tight enough anymore). Thanks Todd!

Hi Todd, Iwoul like to point out that I have solved my problem with the Sony Caroussell of my CD player 315M. I just ungrip the idley pulley and that is it, every thing started to work as a brand new equipment. Thank for your carthesian approach which encourages almost every one in the endeavor of self maintenance ...Best regards from Brazil, Cesar Miranda

I have 3 cds stuck inside a Panasonic 5 disc stack system version that broke down today, with one CD quite valuable & rare. More concerned about safe extrication of the discs tgan keeping the player working at this stage, but with no mechanical experience it's a bit daunting! I may try unscrewing some screws to see if I can in any way access them inside.

I have one of these that was sitting in my basement for 5 years, I just took it out and when I plugged it in it powered on but the front drawer wouldn't open and it wouldnt power off when I pushed the power button, I was going to just throw it away but then I decided to do an old fashioned repair method, I punched it in the power button and punched it in the eject button, the drawer opened 1" and I pulled the drawer out all the way and it closed by itself when I pushed it, and then I was able to get it to open and close by itself, now it's working fine. :), so sometimes the old fashioned repair method (teach it who's boss) really works!

You made the comment "Who would want a disc player" thanks to memory stored media! I much prefer the less compressed audio quality of original CD's, and still have several hundred I enjoy listening to. There is a fairly large market on Ebay and Amazon for working used changers and they command some crazy high prices now in 2020!

Nice video. Being from 7 years ago I doubt you are still reading comments on it, but thought I'd drop a line anyway. I just picked up an identical looking unit. It seems to work fine except that sometimes it fails to read when the tray first closes. The tray seems to not seat all the way in completely. If I give it a push then all is well. So I may take it apart, and try lubricating the rails. As to why someone would want this in today's day and age, well for me it is nostalgic. There is something satisfying about handling actual physical media. Sure I have my entire music collection ripped to Flac, and available on my media server, but sometimes I like to actually play the physical CDs. So I was happy to come across this 5-disc changer this week for $20. I'm sure it will provide years of enjoyment.

I've got a Magnavox 5 Disk CD Player. Was working great for nearly 20 years and more recently just the last hour....playing several cds without a hitch. I hit open and I was able to retrieve all the cds. I noticed what appeared to be an error message EE but loaded another cd, never the less. After all his machine has been like Kryptonite! Well, it wouldn't close....so I gave the tray a slight nudge. Suddenly it closed like a charm. End of story....you might think? Long story short, it wouldn't play, it wouldn't rotate and it wouldn't open no matter what I did. After retrieving a crow bar to force the tray open, I took a deep breath, popped a Xanax and cracked open a beer and went looking for some online help. Found your video on my first search and watched the entire thing. Now calm again, I took the thing apart and did pretty much everything you did. The good news? The thing works like a charm again. The bad news? I have 2 medium sized screws and 1 really long screw leftover that I have no idea where it goes.

Thanks man!!! This vid helped me save a Sony 5 disc that I loved dearly. Took me about 20 minutes and didn't cost me more than a q-tip and a few drops of isopropyl alcohol. Kudos!!! I subscribed.

Mark, I think you are exactly right about the timing issue. I'm sure cleaning the optic helped a lot as well. I think someone else got into this Sony and messed up the timing while trying to solve the optical problem. That's why the screws were loose. Tom

Thank you. I just took my Sony 5 disc player apart exactly as you did because I had the same problem. Cleaned the optical switch put it back together and it works fine.

Thanks. This video gave me courage to open up my Sony 5 disc changer which had jammed, similar to the machine you worked on. I had expected to try to get to the optic sensor to clean, but after opening it up I saw that a CD had actually slipped off the track and was caught below the turntable. Once I pulled it out, the machine works just as it did before.

Thanks. Your vid clued me in to a potential problem with one of the ribbon connectors on a Kenwood 5 CD Player dump find, since it was having multiple issues but powering on just fine.
