Tom Chambers: THE BIGGEST NBA HALL OF FAME SNUB? | FPP

One of, if not the first, stretch four in NBA history Tom Chambers was an 80s big man with a seldom seen blend of athleticism, agility and shooting range. And he used all those skills to become a 20,000 scorer in his career. He was a great player at Utah, playing with the Runnin’ Utes alongside Danny Vranes and would be picked 8th overall in the 1981 NBA draft which included guys like Isiah Thomas, Mark Aguirre, Rolando Blackman and Larry Nance. The beginning of his career would be spent on the San Diego Clippers where he would play well, but after two seasons he was shipped to Seattle as the Clippers preferred their other young big man, Terry Cummings. In Seattle, Chambers would average over 20 points per game across the 5 years he was there. He came as young player on a transitioning from aging stars Jack Sikma and Gus Williams. And although they wouldn’t have a ton of team success, once they acquired Xavier McDaniel and Dale Ellis, the 1987 Seattle Supersonics made an improbable run to the Western Conference Finals. They couldn’t replicate the success the next year and Tom Chambers found himself in uncharted waters as he was the first unrestricted free agent in NBA history. He would take his talents to Phoenix to play alongside Kevin Johnson and Jeff Hornacek, where he immediately became one of the best offensive players in the league and helped the Suns to back to back Western Conference Finals appearance. As Chambers began to slow down, the Suns acquired Charles Barkley and Chambers would be a rotation player during the Suns NBA Finals run in the 1993 NBA season. After this he would return home and play two solid years in Utah for the John Stockton and Karl Malone led Utah Jazz, where he would make one last Conference Finals appearance. He spent 1996 overseas playing for Maccabi Tel-Aviv before attempting brief NBA comebacks with the Charlotte Hornets and Philadelphia 76ers, until ultimately calling it quits in late 1997. He left the NBA as a 20,000 point scorer and one of the best and most unique offensive players of the 80s and 90s, yet for some reason he still hasn’t gotten his call to the NBA Hall of Fame. Whether you think he is deserving of that distinction or not, everyone can agree that Tom Chambers is one of the most underappreciated players in NBA history.

The biggest knock on Chambers is having too little All Star appearances with ONLY 4. Chris Mullin managed 5 All Stars along with 2 Olympic Gold medals. Chambers didn't accomplish much save for his 20,000 points, 4 All Stars and some highlight reels. If he had an NBA championship, consideration for his HOF induction would be much higher. Even Jack Sikma is far more accomplished with 7 All Stars + NBA Championship. Multiple All Star appearances (minimum 5) is a sign of how long your prime and impact was as a player. Chambers' prime was too short.

@Riles3152
@Riles3152 8 месяцев назад
I agree with that. It makes no sense how guys like Vlade Divac and Sarunas Marciulionis end up in a hall of fame. It just lessens the overall value and credibility of the entire establishment. The NBA needs to create their own Hall of Fame like the NFL and major league baseball. There’s too many former NBA players that ended up in the basketball Hall of Fame and just shouldn’t in there if the HOF had legitimate standards.

As a lifelong Bulls fan, I am happy the Sonics made a stupid draft day deal by trading Scottie Pippen to my bulls . I truly believe they would benefited by keeping Scottie with his skill set to play with Tom Chambers , Dale Ellis, and Xavier McDaniel. Scottie would’ve been the playmaker on that team and they probably would’ve been better in 88 then the team that went to the Conference finals the year before. The league was about big guys at that time . I believe a lineup with Scottie and those guys would’ve been devastating. I thank Seattle for their charitable contribution to the 90’s dynasty bulls . Very much appreciated. Lol!!!

The Sonics and Blazers are STUPID with high lottery picks! I swear, the Blazers are so dumb, if they had the #1 pick in 1992, they would have drafted Adam Keefe! I'm not sure if this was factored in HOF snub but when I look at the stats I see that Chambers did get into a lot of foul trouble. He was avg over 4 fouls in about 32 minutes. He didn't play any defense. Kinda like Carlos Boozer. A very good offensive player and rebounder but no defense. Kinda similar to Lauri Markannen right now. I used to think that Chambers was a Hall of Fame snub but lately I've been trying to form a top 200 NBA players all time list and I see that there's a lot more guys than I thought that were averaging 25/26/27 like Chambers along with even better stats and other areas and they're not in the Hall of Fame. @@andresdelportillo9917even though Aguirre, Chambers, and Kemp deserve to at least get consideration, you should be banned for life from discussing basketball to say Hardaway and TMac were bums. Hardaway was out there avg 22 ppg, 10 assists, 3 rebs, and over 2 steals in the early 90s and made like 5 all star games. TMac was the NBA scoring champ and an obvious legit superstar.

@@andresdelportillo9917 Well since the then Magic coach Doc Rivers has made a career of blowing 3-1 leads I'm gonna say it was Doc Rivers fault they blew the lead in 2003. Also T-Macs teammates weren't very good and they were basically a .500 team. TMac and Hardaway still are NBA legends regardless and deserve HOF especially Hardaway.

I think? Chambers was the Andy Messerschmitt and Dave McNally of the NBA? Those two brought free agency to major league baseball and Chambers did a similar thing leaving Seattle for Phoenix with a huge contract for back then. If you compare Chambers to Chris Mullen it makes no sense for Chambers NOT to be in the HOF. Plus some of the players being put in now? Ginobli? Hey? Scottie Pippen? Once Jordan retired Pippen took Chicago nowhere. Chambers could and did burn Bird and Magic among others on the court. But, life is often a personality contest and nothing else. Sadly! I think Chambers was looked at as a snooty moody "pretty boy!" This was and is not fair I think. Anyway, the "kids' today do not know Chambers and will probably never get in the HOF unless somebody like Magic or Jordan push him in publicly. People remember the Lakers and Celtics of the 80s. What most do not know is just how good Seattle was with Dale Ellis, Xavier McDaniel and TOM CHAMBERS. Seattle was just a better coach and a couple more support players to move past LA and Boston? Oh well! Cheers.

The reason Mullin got into HOF was thanks to his 2 Olympic Gold Medals along with 5 All Star appearances. Had Chambers managed at least 5 All-Stars + an NBA Championship, he might better consideration.

Multiple All Star appearances (minimum 5) is a sign of how long your prime and impact was as a player. Chambers' prime was too short.

Unfortunately, Tom Chambers was shunned and snubbed by the "people of the media" because of his race. True. Only NBA player with over 20,000 points and not in the Hall of Fame!!!😮 It's time to put Tom Chambers in the Hall Fame! Long OVERDUE ........
@SoBor911
@SoBor911 5 месяцев назад

NO, Mark Aguirre is the biggest snub. So many HS and College awards, first Mexican-American to be great like he was, big-time scorer, strong passer, good rebounder, 2 titles, on and on, more deserving of a Hall call than about 10 recent inductees (Yao?? Sampson?? Richmond? McGrady??). All his great years in Dallas (over 22 points a year again and again and again....) and how they fell apart without him....

You got that right! I learned it was really pronounced ah-GEAR-ay, but he asked his Mexican paternal grandfather if he could say ah-GWI-ur. I had a classmate named Aguirre, and I WRONGLY called him a-GWI-ur. I didn't learn until 1992 when I was 19, that Mark's father is Mexican-American.
