Had a sort of odd looking, direct speaking guy come into my parts department in Asheville, NC back around 2008. We started talking about politics, country, philosophy, old man to young. He told me he was in poor health and not long for the world, essentially. Less than five minutes after he left it clicked for me; That was f'n Tom Clancy! I'm sure it was him. Strange honor and I wish I had picked up on it a few minutes sooner than I did.
The part about financial independence struck a major chord with me. I'd heard this talk years ago, but only now, after a few more years of experience and learning, do his words make immeasurable sense to me.
Take a look at Jack Ryan as a character…. One of the reason he is able to act the way he does is precisely because he is independently wealthy and is not beholden to anyone…..

@@decayingcorpse this has been going on much longer than 2013 and he knew that. He died at like age 66 and he was a healthy dude wasn’t he? Sorry but I think they took him out.
@@natedog1619 No mate, he had heart trouble. He was adored by the Naval and Intelligence communities, his trouble was he liked the finer things in life (whiskey/tobacco). You tend not to last too long with a lifetime of the good stuff.
@@decayingcorpse bullshit. My ancestors smoked and drank deep into their 80’s. Clancy was too smart for his own good. Snap out of it man please for the love of all things he stood for.
Well it is interesting that Jack Ryan, who is many ways a projection of Tom Clancy, always registered himself as an independent. He didn’t have a political ideology per se but he believed in what worked. However I think it’s safe to say that Jack Ryan would never have become President in the real world unfortunately 😢
He doesn't understand that the space telescope can do things the ones on earth can't do. That's why he had to say it won't be as good in some ways. I wonder what he would think of the James Webb space telescope.
11 years after this triumphant speech, who would of thought. Both world trade centres towers collapsed The Pentagon was on fire, and what stopped the Capitol building from being blown up was a group of civilians on a passenger airliner.
By the way GenZ'rs -- this is a Baby Boomer, talking to GenX. Clancy is the Boomer. Get it? See how old he is in 1990? That is a baby boomer. The kids laughing at all his jokes? That's us! That's GenX! Okay? Got it? Good! (Drops 🎤)
25:50 "It is better to be rich than to be poor....not so much that I have turned into a Donald Trump, thank God I have not." Does anyone have insight into what he was referring to in the 1990 context?
@@sirllamaiii9708 Donald Trump also made the news because he said he was too rich to be poor. That's how I first heard about him. This was during the time of the banking crisis and he actually said the if he were to be poor, banks would go down with him ruining the economy.
Oh, for the days when America had real conservatives like him: smart enough to appreciate the importance of the private sector and financial independence while thanking God, even in 1990, that he had not turned into Donald Trump (see 26:00).
Trump was a Democrat. He gave generously to Hillary's campaign decades ago. Someone sat Trump down in 2008 & told him the truth & told him to tune into Rush Limbaugh. I think that Ron Desantis is better suited to lead the movement Trump added momentum to. I bet Clancy knew Bush Sr was CIA. (It was Timberwolf who took our country to the dogs. Nancy Reagan knew & worked hard to stay on top of things after Reagan was shot.)
@@bigfloppa9594 Trump actually tried to run as a democrat earlier. Wouldn’t be surprised if one day it came out that his political aspirations started just about when his legal/financial woes took flight.
@@madcyborg1822 Tom Clancy is classical neoliberalism, unlike the Right-wing conservatives you have in America. Notice how he said that the Soviets were chauvinistic because they were displeased seeing a Women be a naval fighter pilot. If Tom Clancy was alive he would be a corporate democrat.
The government 16x more on a satellite than the private sector because thats what boeing, raytheon, lockeed martin, and general dynamics want them to do. Yachts are getting expensive these days.
I admire Tom Clancy, but we part company over his comments on 'public-service'. The insurance industry fundamentally facilitates "communal-risk-sharing". I would posit that 'public-service' performs much the same function.
Yeah because the government is good at saving money, creating jobs, and generally making good, rational choices. What a team to root for, are you high?
@@AlphaCarinae Car insurance is a logical consequence of your voluntary decision to start driving a car. You're not told to drive a car by the government.
why does that matter? clancy's strongest novels were rich with subtext and strong political commentary; almost all of his works contained genuine messages that were relevant at the time and many years later. "but he's a genre novelist" is a rather elitist perspective that glazes over the power and purpose behind fiction writing and other arts. the content of a book, film, or otherwise goes beyond its surface level and failure to recognise that is either willful ignorance or arrogant
He's one of the most influential writers of the last 40 years. His impact on tv, cinema, video games, and literature is a massive one. He smashed established literary tropes that dominated several genres for decades.
Tom Clancy was amazing in predicting things… Things like the rise of China as a systemic threat, how governments will try to deal with pandemics, pissed off people flying planes into buildings etc….His other skill was weaving an incredible web of threads but bundling them up again at the end…
26:00 a jab at the future President 45, Donald Dump. Clancy would not have approved of him, and would have roasted him worse than Rutherford B Hayes (19:30).
@Jay Plays as of yesterday, 12.22.2022, twice impeached Trump, was behind the Jan 6 instigation. So, yes, we know the truth, and no disimformation will change Trump's impeachment nor his betrayal of the Constitution.
@9:00 "nobody predicted what happened in 1989...". Actually, I did, back in 1976, I told friends & relatives that if a poor man in a horse racing against a rich man, eventually he'll lose. This was exactly how the Soviet Union in a arms race war with the USA. It's a so basic logic.
Over 30 years ago and its only gotten worse. Hell, he even disgusted the orange guy already. If he only knew... If you take the United out of USA, all that's left is SA. And that reminds me of something very disgustful. I really, really do hope, that BLUE will succeed next week....
Yep. Love me some Clancy, and he is very astute in other fields, but some Americans have this blind spot, this need to be unique. Contradiction is he refers to the Enlightenment, as if that wasn’t a French invention.
The confusion is because in today’s light, anyone that seems reasonable and not completely morally bankrupt or mentally insane wouldn’t be suspected of being a conservative.
He was certainly not a conservative in a /women should cook and have kids and kids are to be seen not heard/ kinda way. And he would be disgusted with the loose morals and hypocrisy of the GOP today. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SJ47CZCMPHU.html
Funny how wrong he was about the Kek telescope though, private industry clearly was not capable of being able to provide a good service compared to the government
Pfft. Reagan was one of the top 10 presidents. If not a top 5. History is controlled ... essentially by the media ... by most often liberal antiwar anti american types. They will continue to rewrite history according to their political n social beliefs. With almost total disregard for facts or circumstances at that time.
